Starting in 2017, Helmut designed the TD309 turntable for Thorens, and he has designed all subsequent Thorens turntables.

Rather than resting on his laurels or enjoying a well-deserved vacation, Helmut went full steam ahead and accepted the challenge from Thorens owner Gunter Kuerten to design a new Reference turntable, which led to the acclaimed Thorens New Reference, introduced in 2023.

Although he could technically retire, Helmut remains fascinated by technical challenges and has spent much of his time developing the ideal tonearm. This combination of materials helps dampen and smooth the platter. The platter has a 10 mm hardened-steel axle that rotates within a bronze bushing and rests on a 7 mm ceramic ball that in turn rests on a Delrin disc with a center hole, so the ball runs on a defined circular ring. This creates an even, controlled braking torque that keeps the drive motor constantly running against a small load. This braking torque calms the motor’s mechanical running. Pivot arms are the simplest in construction and by far the most commonly used. This type is found on turntables from all brands, such as Thorens, Linn, Technics, Rega, and Pro-Ject, to name just a few well-known models, but it’s also found on the most specialized high-end brands. The best tangential arms can provide theoretically perfect tracking, but the designs are hard to get just right and introduce other compromises.

Opinions on the “perfect” arm construction will forever vary, but in general, if a robust and sonorous sound is desired, the arm will also need to have a robust bearing construction. However, with linear tracking arms, the assembly quickly adds too much mass and/or friction to allow tracking with mere needle force. Thus, there are two common solutions. One is to use a light tonearm in combination with an air-bearing so that the arm moves basically frictionlessly and the stylus in the groove can move the arm directly. The second solution is to allow the arm to deviate just enough from the ideal zero-tracking-error position to trigger an optical or mechanical contact that engages an electric mechanism to move the arm in the desired direction.

Next: Earlier experience with Linear Tracking Turntables and introducing the Thiele TA01 Tonearm

<p and Holbo, and I have owned multiple classic turntables with powered tangential arms, such as the Pioneer PL-L1000, Yamaha PX-2, and several of the LP-sized Technics players, including the SL-7, SL-10, and SL-15. To my surprise, these “cute” automatic turntables actually proved considerably better than expected, although they were ultimately no match for a good standard pivot-arm turntable such as a classic Thorens TD-160.

All these systems work as intended, but most air bearings require a light arm with a delicate construction and an air pump that can be audible, particularly with heavier arm assemblies, while motorized designs are inherently complex. Sonically, air bearings tend to have a light-footed character, whereas motorized arms tend to sound earthy and robust. However, all these motorized designs rely on a small tracking error to detect arm movement and adjust accordingly. In essence, these arms “crawl” across the record. The idea is to allow a small error margin across the entire record, rather than reducing tracking error to zero only at two defined locations and letting the error swing increasingly wide around them, as with pivot tonearms. Also, one has to wonder whether the start-stop nature of the movement produces audible artifacts, whether through power-supply modulation or direct mechanical resonances. Ultimately, while these purely linear systems work, they depend on complex mechanisms.

Thiele TA01 Zero Tracking Error Tonearm

With the TA01 Zero Tracking Error Tonearm, Helmut Thiele created an arm that cleverly combines the advantages of the two traditional methods as described above. The second important aspect is resonance. Helmut showed me measurements made with a laser motion sensor during the design of the Thorens TP92 tonearm, where different frequencies excite the arm tube into movements one would not think possible. Armed with that knowledge, the arm was damped and braced with a ring in the middle of the tube to counteract certain resonances.

In the TA01, two Carbon-Fiber tubes are used with different resonance frequencies, one inside another, and the gap between them is filled with a 2-component gel for optimum damping.

The TA01 is not the first of its kind; the Thales tonearms spring to mind. When I asked Helmut about this, he confirmed that the Thales Simplicity arm actually inspired him to create his own design. Helmut was fascinated, but felt that the pivot points at the headshell side were undesirable. Thus, he began developing a design that combined the stability of a regular pivot arm with perfect tracking.

The result is the Thiele TA01, which is the first tonearm in which the headshell is rigidly fixed and the entire tonearm assembly, including the counterweight, swings back and forth on a single solid pivot point, guided by a second arm to create the perfect tracking curve.

As ingenious as the arm is in its construction, it is very simple to adjust and operate. VTF is adjusted with a small rotary dial at the end of the arm. Azimuth is adjusted by rotating the headshell in its conical collar that is tensioned lengthwise with a hex screw. The seemingly simple detail of using a conical joint is crucial to achieving the rock-solid stability normally found only in one-piece tonearms.

Next: TA01 Tonearm continued, DB Damping Base, RM01 Recordmat, DW01 Damping Weight, and Analog Relax EX500 MC Cartridge

Tonearm height (VTA) can be adjusted conveniently with a hex screw in the arm base during playback and locked with another hex screw afterward. To combat these resonances, Thiele has developed two products that work ideally together: the RM01 Recordmat and the DW01 Damping Weight.

Thiele RM01 Recordmat

The RM01 Recordmat, made of a foamed PVC core with hard ABS top and bottom layers, dampens resonances from the underside of the vinyl. When placed on top of a record, the DW01 damping weight minimizes resonances from the top of the vinyl using a combination of aluminum and wooden parts, connected by a damping gel. This 2-component gel is also used in the tonearmtube of the TA01 tonearm in combination with carbon material. When combined with the RM01 Recordmat, resonances are effectively minimized from both the top and underside of the vinyl.

When an LP is played, the cartridge’s stylus (2) sets the entire record, including the paper labels (1), into vibration. These vibrations and resonances are superimposed on the music signal, producing an imprecise sound that impairs accurate reproduction and precise localization of the musical instruments in the virtual space.

To combat this, the Damping Weight contacts the vinyl on the top of the paper label via three ebony rods (3) and transmits the resonances to a multi-ribbed coupling disc (4) in the center of the unit. This coupling disc is connected to the body of the Damping Weight via a damping gel (5). The total housing (6) weight of approximately 400 grams generates the corresponding pressure on the vinyl disc and dampens all resonances via the gel. The body of the Damping Weight itself is further dampened by ebony inlays (7) on top.

The result is very effective silencing of the vinyl, delivering a clean sound image with precise localization and reproduction of the musical instruments.

Analog Relax EX500 MC Cartridge

Rhapsody provided the TT01 with an Analog Relax EX-500 MC Cartridge, and I formed my initial impressions of the turntable using this cartridge. Later on, I mounted a Thorens TAS 1600 instead to enable a fair comparison with my other turntables.

Analog Relax isn’t as recognized in the cartridge scene as the major brands, but they have a longstanding presence. Founded in 2016 by Yasushi Yurugi, Analog Relax designs and manufactures artisanal handcrafted high-end moving coil (MC) phono cartridges and analog accessories.

The EX500 is the second model in the lineup, starting with the EX300 at 2.890 Euros and going all the way up into the stratosphere with the 12.490 Euro EX1000. The EX500 is 4.990 Euros. While that is far from peanuts, this is a realistic price for artisanally handmade cartridges by Japanese craftsmen these days.

Analog Relax does not use metals or resins. Instead, the company insists on using hand-selected tonewood. The EX500’s Hard Maple Solid Wood body looks absolutely beautiful. Still, at the price, I expected fancier specifications than what seems like a rather common aluminum cantilever with a Special Elliptical Solid Diamond Stylus. However, a deeper look reveals custom specifications such as thicker-walled aluminum for the cantilever, special bonding of the diamond, and more precise polishing of the diamond tip than usual.

According to the specs, the TA01 arm works well with low- to medium-mass cartridges. This includes “regular” medium-compliance cartridges as well as low-compliance cartridges. Analog Relax specifies a Dynamic Compliance of 6μm/mM @ 100Hz for the EX500, which is lower than typical. By comparison, the AT OC9XSL and Thorens TAS 1600 specify a Dynamic Compliance of 18 x 10 – 6 cm/dyne @ 100 Hz, which is the same as 18 μm/mM. Indeed, the EX500’s stylus feels stiffer than the other cartridges I have. However, since Rhapsody recommended this particular cartridge, I have no doubt it will work especially well with the TA01 arm.

As I describe further down in my listening tests, the EX500 proves once again that the tonearm and cartridge pairing matters more than the cartridge’s pedigree or stylus shape.

Next: Review Setup, Turntable setup by Michael van Polen of Rhapsody, and Listening

Review Context

I listened to the Thiele TT01 in the main system, comprising the CH Precision C1.2 DAC, L1 preamplifier, and A1.5 power amplifier. For my three turntables, I used the same humble but neutral and well-balanced Van den Hul MC The ISIS interlinks to the Grimm Audio PW1 phono stage. The Thiele TT01 turntable, however, has XLR outputs, and Rhapsody provided the Van den Hul MC Silver IT MkIII XLR-to-RCA interlink for this, adding that it was a particularly good match for this turntable and cartridge. I will also use the ISIS interlinks with XLR adapters for the TT01 later, but I wanted to start with the recommended configuration for my initial impressions.

The TA01 arm’s unusual weight distribution makes it feel distinct from any other pivot tonearm I’ve used, whether Thorens, Technics, and similar tonearms, or heavier designs such as SME, Rega, or Origin Live. However, it takes only a couple of records to get used to this, and after that, the arm actually feels more secure and precise than other tonearms. From that moment, the arm handles superbly uniformly and predictably. It follows the movements of the hand very smoothly, and, because there’s zero drift, I find that it’s easier to find the exact beginning of particular tracks on a record with this arm than with any of the other turntables’ arms. This is partly because the arm has been calibrated very carefully and doesn’t use traditional anti-skating, but also because of its precise, perfectly damped lift mechanism. I wouldn’t have thought it at first, but rather than the delicate instrument you might expect, the lift mechanism and handle are very sturdy, and the arm movement isn’t affected by how you operate the handle.

Besides the TT01 turntable’s obvious benefit of Zero Tracking Error thanks to its TA01 tonearm, it also places a strong emphasis on vibration control. The turntable has multiple insulation layers and additionally sits on a dedicated Damping Base.

From my experience, damping can be a double-edged sword. When misapplied or excessive, it can diminish liveliness and expression. However, at times, these qualities are deliberately subdued to create a performance that is non-aggressive, quiet, calm, and relaxed. So whenever I hear that damping is a special point of attention, I can’t help but fear a dulled or less exciting experience.

Well, I needn’t have worried. The TT01 sure sounds beautifully clean, quiet, calm, and composed, but in a good way, superbly natural, and, importantly, the TT01 is neither polite nor restrained! Quite the opposite, actually. The music is living and breathing, and bursting with energy, but with a total absence of stress. Furthermore, this turntable’s bass is also something else! Rock-solid in its stability and full-blooded, yet fluid and organic. In this respect, the TT01 reminds me of the AVID HIFI Sequel SP, but with a more free-breathing and free-flowing nature. Whereas the Sequel could feel a little cerebral, the TT01 is overwhelmingly emotional and organic.

The Thiele TT01’s sure-footed pacing and utter absence of any particular drive-type signature is remarkable, especially given its seemingly simple belt-drive motor. The turntable has a generous, lyrical, gushing feel combined with direct-coupled realism, avoiding the overly dreamy, floaty etherealism that can come from some turntables. A super-delicate, airy, and free-floating sound can be highly seductive initially, but without grounding, solidity, and drive, such a presentation soon fails to keep my attention. Don’t get me wrong: the TT01 is definitely delicate and refined, but unlike many turntables, it doesn’t prioritize fluidity, flow, and delicacy over solidity and dynamic impact. Rather, it weaves it all into a super-coherent whole. With the TT01, there’s never the feeling of the sound being shaped in any particular way. Instead, it is “simply” relayed as is, without rounding or hardening, oversaturating or graying, overdamping or shouting.

Of course, such a superb neutral balance is not at all simple to achieve. Usually, the most neutral products allow a degree of leanness or desaturation, or worse, a sense of clinicality, but this is completely alien to the TT01. This turntable is a full-blooded music maker!

Naturally, one expects an absence of tracking error with a Zero Tracking Error tonearm, and this, the TA01 most definitely delivers. I tested this by comparing degradation across a range of well-known records, and paying particular attention to the sound degradation between and around the two null points, and particularly where tracking error rises most significantly in my experience, which is usually in the last track. First, I listened to this on the TT01, and then on my other turntables. And sure enough, the TT01 shows no signs of mistracking, no matter which track is played, while the other turntables consistently show clear signs of compression, reduced refinement, and, most annoying of all, sibilance in hi-hats and loudly pronounced S’s in vocals, as the tracking error increases and the information is at its most dense in the last track.

Of course, music can still be enjoyed with a very good standard pivot tonearm, so must you have perfect tracking? That depends on the person. Some listeners have no problems with a little more sibilance in the last tracks, while others can’t stand it. In recent years, even though I always noticed it, I convinced myself I could live with it. But as I discovered, truly pure and clean playback, as achieved by the TT01, is something you get used to all too quickly, after which it becomes jarring to listen to the same record on one of the other turntables.

Along with its super-accurate tracing, which delivers pure, clean, articulate, and delicate treble, the TA01 arm offers another major benefit: a dead-center, absolutely non-wavering center image, along with rock-solid soundstaging. As mentioned, I have owned several linear tracking turntables, and even though these illustrated, to some extent, the benefits of low tracking error in typically high-error locations on the record, none of them achieved a TT01/TA01 level of accuracy. It was always only just noticeable, and the results were offset by other downsides. Consequently, when playing records on the Technics or one of the Thorens turntables with regular pivot tonearms, I certainly hear tracking error, particularly in the last track, but a pivot arm offers inherent ease of use and non-wavering repeatability. Thus, so far, I still wondered whether tangential arms were worth the extra complexity. As complex as the TA01 appears, as simple it is to use, and in practice, as long as the turntable is on a solid rack and non-bending floor, the arm offers the exact same ease of use and stability as a regular pivot arm, with the significant benefit of Zero Tracking Error!

Nevertheless, I still was not prepared for the additional benefits the TA01 arm brings. Sure, the arm’s price raises expectations, but nothing can prepare you for what you’re missing with ordinary pivot tonearms until you hear what the TA01 can do.

No matter what happens rhythmically or dynamically, and no matter how busy the mix gets, imaging stays 100% locked in place, whether it’s centrally positioned vocals or very subtle sounds buried deep in the mix and far back into the soundstage. Furthermore, while enhanced resolution and precision often result in clearer transient behavior that benefits percussive sounds, and the TA01 sure delivers this, it also extends this benefit to sustained sounds and the quietest reverbs. With this turntable, I frequently hear subtle sounds better fleshed out, more immediate, more distinct, and more realistically portrayed.

While I’m sure the TT01’s triple-layer enclosure contributes to its excellent performance, I’m increasingly convinced that the TA01 arm plays an absolutely crucial role.

Next: Adding DW01 Damping Weight, Removing RM01 Recordmat, Removing DB Damping Base, and Technics SL1200G

Adding the DW01 Damping Weight

I mentioned my reservations regarding damping in the main listening section. Even though those fears proved entirely unfounded, I still had some mild trepidation when putting on the DW01 Damping Weight. You see, I used a few damping weights before, and without exception, they removed the bad along with the good. Basically, I’ve always felt that these dampers disrupted the pacing, impulsiveness, and overall dynamics. However, once again, Thiele proved me wrong, as the DW01 works particularly well in combination with the TT01.

The sound is now earthier, without changing the solidity or robustness. The presentation is most definitely calmer, but without affecting speed or dynamics. It’s definitely also a bit darker, not because there’s a lack of detail, but because previously unnoticed restlessness and unwanted interactions have been removed. Sounds now actually appear more sudden, coming from an even quieter background. Additionally, the DW01 enhances soundstaging, extending it further into the rear of the room, while also enriching the sense of emotional involvement with the music.

If that sounds impressive, now get this… With the DW01 removed, the sound suddenly feels barebones and cool in comparison! So, yes, it is a costly accessory, and the darker balance might not suit every system or taste, but there’s not a shred of a doubt that this Damping Weight does its job precisely as intended.

Out of curiosity, I also tried the RM01 Recordmat and DW01 Damping Weight with the Thorens and Technics turntables. Of course, the combo does not magically turn these turntables into Thieles. If only it were that simple! However, it does achieve similar results with all three turntables while retaining each model’s inherent qualities. In every case, the bass becomes fuller, the midrange breathes more freely, and the upper midrange and treble become quieter, calmer, and more organic. Thus, these accessories are worth considering not just for Thiele turntables, but for any turntable.

Removing the RM01 Recordmat

After removing the mat, the tonearm needed to be lowered 3mm to maintain the same VTA. After aligning the arm to the exact measured difference, I repeated the procedure Michael showed me, which involves listening for particular sonic cues while fine-tuning the VTA during playback. Once I found the ideal position, I played the same records I played before adding the mat.

There is no doubt: the Recordmat makes a large difference in the sound. Without it, the bass becomes more chiseled-from-granite-like, which, in itself, is a nice quality to have in the bass. However, this character extends through the midrange and treble, which are now drier, feel more staccato, and less free-flowing and natural. Remarkably, while the bass feels very solid and direct without the mat, it is actually nimbler and more precise with the Recordmat in place.

Overall, the mat delivers a subtly lusher, more spacious, and more organic sound that’s also more accurate and realistic. Piano, for instance, retains its percussive element, but the key strokes erupt more spontaneously from a more silent background and with more rhythmic freedom, while sustain is more clearly delineated.

To sum up, the Recordmat enhances both transients and decays and benefits bass precision, midrange purity, and treble delicacy and airiness, all without introducing any downsides.

Removing the DB Damping Base

With the Recordmat in place but the Damping Base removed and the turntable placed with its coned footers directly on the HRS EXR Audio Stand, the turntable remains technically amazing, and, importantly, the TA01 arm tracks just as superbly. However, you do really hear the effect of more noise coupling into the signal, as vocals are now less pure and clean and, counter-intuitively, the bass is also less precise. However, the presentation becomes more static. The music is less lit from within and feels less living and breathing, and rather than being instantly seductive, it now feels slightly less emotionally charged.

Nevertheless, after listening to a few tracks, I’m adjusted again, and my conclusion remains unchanged from the very first sentence in this review. Even on its own, the TT01/TA01 still performs better than all other turntables I have used.

Compared to my current turntables

Besides making his own turntable and tonearm, Helmut has also designed for Thorens since 2017, and I have two of the turntables he designed. I loved the Thorens TD 1601 from the first moment I heard it. It has all the Thorens DNA but was such a large improvement over any of the classic Thorens turntables I used that I purchased the review sample. That was the first model with the straight, single-piece TP 92 arm, where the cartridge sits under the arm tip. A few years later, Thorens released the TP 160 arm (also designed by Helmut Thiele) with its unique knife-edge + magnet bearing. This new arm offered clear advantages in certain areas, such as incredibly airy, refined treble and beautiful liquidity, but I felt the TP92 also had its strengths, such as robust bass and powerful dynamics. Each has something unique to offer, which is why I’ve kept both turntables.

The latest turntable I added was the Technics SL1200G. Before scoffing at this “DJ” turntable, please note that this Grand Class model sounds nothing like the standard SL1200. The “G” costs 4,5 as much as the base model for a very valid reason. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t believe the hype when it was introduced, which is why I reviewed it and then purchased it. In a nutshell, the SL1200 G has none of the base model’s dryness, tonal grayness, or staccato nature; instead, it’s remarkably fluid and refined. Compared to the Thorens TD 1601, especially with the TP92 arm, the SL 1200G is leaner, tonally less saturated, and overall less weighty, but it achieves a level of neutrality, transparency, and unwavering stability that the Thorens turntables cannot match. That’s why, to this day, I have three turntables and use the one that fits my mood. For the fine details and in-depth comparisons, please read the Thorens TD1601/TP92, Thorens TD1601/TP160, and Technics Grand Class Turntables reviews.

As far as cartridges go, I settled on the Thorens TAS 1600 (Line Contact) for the SL1200 G as well as the Thorens TD1601 with the TP 160 arm. For the older Thorens TD1601 with the TP92 arm, I preferred the even more refined and precise TAS 1500 (MicroRidge) cartridge. This goes some way toward extracting more precision and refinement from the TP92 arm, although the TP160 remains considerably more fluid and refined than the TP92 arm, no matter the cartridge.

Since I only have one Analog Relax EX500 cartridge and want to avoid unnecessary swaps, especially because its lower-than-average compliance will likely not suit my turntable arms, I used the two TAS 1600 cartridges to facilitate direct comparisons between different turntables, before ultimately also mounting a second TAS 1600 in the Thiele’s TA01 arm.

Technics SL1200 G

When fitted with a TAS 1600 cartridge, the SL1200G delivers very good resolution and unexpected fluidity and refinement, without any of the dryness, chugging, or other effects historically attributed to its Direct-Drive motor. I honestly can’t say the Technics is any less fluid than the Thorens turntables, but it does have a relatively more analytical feel.

However… compared to the Thiele, the Technics is very clearly many tiers lower in performance. Seriously, while the Technics is great at its price point and holds up pretty well with certain music genres, this is no contest. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s a fully mature and utterly realistic performance versus good Hi-Fi.

The Technics is much less robust in the bass and feels lightweight, tonally pastel, slightly synthetic by comparison, and far less natural and realistic. As the Thiele turntable also illustrates quite painfully, the Technics is not just a little lean, but also a little too brightly lit on top, which subjectively elevates the sense of detail and resolution and adds excitement, but also unnaturally spotlights the treble. Furthermore, the Technics moves into sibilance far sooner with hi-hats and loud S’s, particularly in the high-tracking-error parts of the record, but also overall.

The Thiele also has a far more physical reach-out-and-touch presence between the speakers. It’s not that the Technics does not focus or image well. It’s a little more forward than the Thiele, but in a more aggressive way. Even though the Technics sounds quite precise and refined compared to other turntables I own and have tried, the Thiele TT01/TA01 reveals it as rather messy from the midrange up. It’s very easy to hear but hard to explain. The Technics does sound diffuse, but it’s as if all the individual sounds in a recording are interfering with one another as a sort of crosstalk, whereas they all inhabit their own space, completely unaffected by the rest of the mix with the Thiele. Combined with its remarkable solidity and natural tonality, the performance makes one feel this much closer to the master tape. Once I heard this, it was very hard to return to the Technics.

Next: Thorens TD1601 with TP160, Thorens TD1601 with TP92, Thiele TT01 with TAS1600, Van den Hul Cable Swap, Closing Thoughts, and Conclusion

Thorens TD1601/TP160

This Thorens turntable impresses with its combination of airy refinement, liquidity, and natural tonality. It’s not as neutral or as exciting as the Technics, but it has a more natural timbre and is very easy to listen to. However, just like the Technics, this Thorens is simply no match for the Thiele.

First and foremost, it cannot match the Thiele’s rock-solid stability and physical presence. As lyrical, natural, and free-flowing as it sounds, it’s just not nearly as convincingly realistic. Although it provides a more natural sound than the Technics, it is rhythmically less sure-footed and rather polite, especially when compared to the very robust, dynamic, and expressive Thiele.

Further, the aforementioned differences in soundstage stability and imaging between the Technics and Thiele play out very similarly with the Thorens.

Even if the Thorens improves on the Technics in certain aspects, it does not come any closer to the Thiele’s incredible performance, and again, it is simply no contest.

Thorens TD1601/TP92

Just as the Thorens with the TP160 arm has its particular strengths, so does the TP92 arm, which is why I have kept both turntables so far. The TP92 arm produces remarkably full-bodied bass, with a more deliberate sense of PRaT and a robust, dynamically impactful overall delivery. In this sense, it initially seems to get closer to the Thiele than the other two turntables. However, this arm offsets these feats with a drier, less refined upper midrange and treble. Although it has an impressively powerful, exciting delivery, it paints in broad strokes and lacks the refinement, delicacy, and fluidity that the Thorens with the TP160 arm and the Technics both provide.

So, once again, all bets are off as soon as I switch to the Thiele TT01. Yup, it is no contest. The Thiele is simply better in every respect.

All three turntables’ concepts have been well thought out, and they all perform well above average in the most important parameters. At their price level, you can’t ask for more. Nevertheless, each model still has its particular strengths, and as I know all too well, it is not hard to find a product that outperforms another in a given aspect or two. However, it is incredibly hard to surpass a well-balanced product across the board, in all parameters. More often than not, some areas improve while others take a backseat. That’s why I was still using this trio. This goes back to what I often write in my reviews: in audio, just as in life, perfection does not exist. It comes down to finding the right balance of virtues that matches your preferences.

However, with the Thiele TT01, I simply cannot find any trade-offs. This turntable not only outperforms my three current turntables, but it also impressed me more than any other turntable I have used or reviewed. If perfection is a pipe dream, then what am I to make of the TT01?

Thorens TAS 1600 in TA01

So far, I have been listening to the TT01 using the Analog Relax EX500 MC cartridge. Not quite fair, indeed, given that this cartridge alone costs more than any of my three turntables with a Thorens TAS 1600 MC cartridge. To rule out this variable, I removed the EX500 from the TA01 arm and substituted a second TAS 1600 cartridge.

Ok, this certainly diminishes the magic, making the performance leaner, tonally duller, and less natural, realistic, and convincing. I’ve never found the TAS 1600 to sound synthetic, but the EX500’s richly saturated tonality and highly natural timbre do make it sound that way. This sure illustrates just beautifully why it makes sense to invest in a truly high-end cartridge. I’ve always felt the Thorens cartridge offers excellent performance for its price, and I’ve found it hard to meaningfully improve on it with any other cartridge in its price range. However, as the Analog Relax EX500 proves, things really do get serious when you spend serious money.

So, what remains of the TT01/TA01’s performance when using the TAS 1600? A lot, in fact! The TAS 1600 should not be written off too soon, as it still tracks splendidly, providing a similar level of resolution and refinement. The TT01 is also still super stable, with rock-solid imaging and soundstaging, and although the dynamic behavior is a little calmer than with the EX500, the turntable still delivers impressive dynamics. The bass is definitely thinner, but still very pure, and deep bass is still remarkably well resolved. While the EX500’s added value is undeniable, even when “handicapped” with an affordable cartridge, the Thiele TT01 still comfortably outperforms my current turntables, and it is still the best turntable I have heard.

Given how well the Thiele already performs with the Thorens cartridge, it may not seem absolutely necessary to add a more expensive cartridge. Although the EX500 pairs extremely well, other candidates exist to suit different tastes. For instance, Helmut himself likes to use the Ortofon Verismo. Unfortunately, as I’ve witnessed firsthand now and with other turntables before, truly great cartridges are invariably much more expensive than popular mid-tier models. This is just the reality of the audio industry: costs rise sharply when economies of scale no longer apply.

Left: Van den Hul MC Silver IT MkIII; Right: Van den Hul The ISIS.

Swapping Van den Hul interlinks

Now that it is fitted with a TAS 1600 cartridge, the Thiele TT01 is operating under nearly the same conditions as my three turntables, with only one more aspect to investigate: the interlink!

So far, I have been listening to the TT01 using the Van den Hul MC Silver IT MkIII interlinks into the Grimm PW1 phono stage. Early on, I did try this cable as a regular interlink between the CH Precision C1.2 DAC and L1 preamp instead of my usual Driade Flow Reference 808 interlink, to get an idea of its overall sonic signature. In that case, the Van den Hul MC Silver IT MkIII is just as airy and refined, but sounds fuller and warmer in the bass, harmonically richer in the midrange, and lush while remaining upbeat and retaining dynamics. The Driade cable is leaner and cooler, but also more articulate and direct, and feels more precise, if arguably less seductive.

Similar sentiments surface when comparing the Van den Hul MC Silver IT MkIII to the Van den Hul ISIS, but to a greater extent. Nothing is obviously wrong with the ISIS, and it sounds neutral and well-balanced, but compared to the MC Silver IT MkIII, the ISIS is rather bare-bones: comparatively lean, dry, and matter-of-fact. I swapped back and forth a couple of times, and every time the ISIS was connected, I had to readjust to the simpler and more sober balance. But even with this humble cable, the TT01/TA01’s inherent qualities still shine through. Moreover, I would have used the same words in this review even if I hadn’t had the MC Silver IT MkIII. The turntable simply is that impressive!

It’s worth spending a few more words on the MC Silver IT MkIII because there’s definitely something to this cable. First and foremost, it doesn’t try to impress, and it does not emphasize or suppress any part of the audio spectrum. Instead, it provides a smooth, harmonically rich, and tonally well-saturated sound that is easy on the ear, while sacrificing very little in resolution and precision. Its only vice, if you can call it that, is that it slightly rounds the transients, but it does not feel slow or undynamic, and it more than offsets this with a gorgeously natural rendition that maximizes emotional involvement.

Closing Thoughts

Of course, some will find it nonsensical to compare a 27.450-euro turntable to turntables in the 4.000-4.500 euro range, and I agree the gap is very large. However, my experience is not limited to these three turntables, and although I do not have any higher-end contenders available for a direct comparison, the Thiele TT01 truly stands out.

Meanwhile, others will question the validity of a turntable costing more than a few thousand euros. After all, to paraphrase a famous character in the Hi-Fi industry, isn’t a turntable’s only job to spin at the right speed? Obviously, that’s only a fraction of a turntable’s job. More importantly, the price gap is more than justified by the massive increase in performance.

With these comparisons, I hope to have illustrated just how fundamental the differences are, and why it makes perfect sense to invest in an arm as magnificent as the TA01.

Conclusion

The Thiele TT01 is a superbly well-balanced turntable, and the TA01 is nothing short of a groundbreaking tonearm.
