To clarify Halcro’s Bridge-Drive-Mode, let me first provide some background on Bridging and Bi-Amping. To ensure the accuracy of the information, I consulted Halcro Lead Engineer Lance Hewitt.

Bi-Amping

Bi-Amping is the practice of connecting two power amplifiers to a single loudspeaker, with the amplifiers driven in phase. The speaker is split into 2 or more sections, most commonly high- and low-frequency, with each power amp driving one section. There is no interconnection between the power amps’ outputs, so each amp delivers its maximum voltage and current. This will provide more power when a single power amp is current-limited by the speaker’s low impedance. Driving each section of the speaker should result in a higher impedance seen by each power amp, therefore allowing an overall power increase.

Bridging

Bridging typically is the practice of connecting two power amplifiers to a single loudspeaker, with each amp driving the transducer in opposite directions. To achieve this, the two amplifiers are driven in opposing phases. Compared to using two amplifiers in Bi-Amping mode, this effectively doubles the available voltage across the loudspeaker and halves the current and damping factor, while maintaining the same damping factor and available current as a single amp. It’s important to note that the Halcro Eclipse power amp has an extremely low output impedance, and even doubling a tiny value yields a still small number.

Parallel

Parallel wiring is a lesser-known and rarely used form of Bridging. With this method, two power amplifiers are driven in phase, and their outputs are combined to drive a single loudspeaker. In this configuration, the output voltage remains constant, but the output impedance is halved, and the available current and damping factor are doubled. While this may sound like a theoretically ideal method for difficult speakers, Halcro recommends against it because there will always be a slight output variation between the power amps. If the outputs are connected, a circulating current will flow between the power amps, which is undesirable and can cause internal heating. This can be reduced by adding resistors in series with the speaker from each power amp to balance the currents, but this would defeat the purpose of the connection from a Hi-Fi standpoint.

Super-conveniently, the Equinox indicates the active input with a red LED on the back, right next to the physical input.

Halcro Bridged-Drive Mode

The Equinox preamp includes a bridged-drive mode that enables it to drive a pair of power amplifiers per channel. Like the Eclipse power amp, the Equinox preamp’s extremely low distortion, high slew rate, and fast transient response lead to a remarkably liquid, organic, and utterly free-flowing sound.

Like the power amp, the Equinox preamp is so natural and self-effacing that it encourages listening to the heart of the music rather than the technical aspects. The Equinox has magnificent resolution, but it never sounds forward, let alone “aggressive” or “in your face”. Likewise, the preamp has incredible analytical qualities, yet it never sounds analytical and consistently presents everything you play in a stress-free and utterly natural way.

Some very precise amplifiers can be overly controlled, and this often extends to the soundstaging. Such products can be highly focused at the expense of flow and expansion. Not the Equinox. The focus is as good as it gets, while the soundstage is as large or as intimate as the recording requires. There is also very good depth within the stage, with precise instrument placement.

Volume control is a hot topic, with manufacturers swearing by one technique or another. It’s not clear how the Equinox handles volume leveling, but what is clear is that it operates extremely evenly. No matter the volume setting, whether whisper-quiet, very loud, or anywhere in between, the soundstage maintains a cohesive unity, and the music simply flows effortlessly.

The Equinox also operates 100% silently. First, and foremost, there is no audible hiss or switching noise when using any of its controls, from the tweeters. Secondarily, there is zero mechanical hum from the case. This may sound like a normal request for an ultra-high-end audio component, but as I know all too well, mechanical silence is by no means guaranteed, regardless of the component’s cost.

The preamp’s quietness is also reflected in the music. There’s a calmness and unforced quality to everything you play, yet nothing sounds the same. There is no forwardness or a tendency to sound laid-back; the sound is neither fast nor slow, and there is never a sense that the preamp is trying to be impressive. The preamp “simply” relays the recordings. This supposedly simple task is actually one of the hardest aspects to achieve with a preamp.

Next: Listening continued and Conclusion

Like the CH Precision L1, the Equinox has extremely little character. However, even with two world-class components that are both extremely neutral, there can still be a significant difference in sonic presentation.

Both preamplifiers deliver an incredibly detailed sound with immense refinement and superb resolution. The Equinox, however, offers fuller, rounder bass and a richer, more organic midrange. By contrast, the L1 sounds a little brighter and airier. This is a strange and relative phenomenon, given that both preamplifiers measure extremely linearly. The L1, on its own, never sounds overly bright to me. Likewise, the Equinox, on its own, does not sound dark. While the L1 does not convey more detail, it presents it more explicitly and with a subjectively more open treble, which can make it sound a little more exciting, while the Equinox is slightly more relaxed. On the other hand, while I already regard CH Precision equipment as possessing vanishingly little in the way of a solid-state signature, the Equinox sounds even less like a transistor component.

For many years, I was a huge fan of Jeff Rowland equipment. Now, listening to the Equinox reminds me of some of the unique aspects I valued highly in the brand’s best preamplifiers, the Coherence II, Criterion, and Corus. The Jeff Rowland magic is best described as a delicate balance of sweetness, resolution, flow, and refinement, and at the time, this balance was rare in the world of transistor amplification. I was not aware of any downsides until I heard better preamplifiers, such as the CH Precision L1, Spectral 30SV, and Aries Cerat Impera II, which made me realize what could be further achieved in dynamics and timbral realism, among other areas. Well, leave it to the Equinox to retain all these desirable qualities while further elevating precisely these points of attention.

Essentially, the Equinox provides a perfect middle ground between the neutrality of the CH L1, the refined sweetness of the best Jeff Rowland preamplifiers, and the liquidity and harmonic richness of tube products.

Honestly, I never believed that all these traits could be distilled into a coherent whole within a single product without introducing serious drawbacks elsewhere.
