Technical Details<\/h3>\n

The Verse is designed for listeners who want to experience the essence of LAiV: R2R musicality, discrete engineering, and thoughtful design \u2014 without stepping directly into flagship territory. Nevertheless, the manufacturer makes it clear that the Verse is not a simplified product; it is a carefully scaled one that preserves what matters most: musicality, signal integrity, and long-term listening satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Verse is more than a DAC. With a discrete-output, buffered preamplifier, analog volume control, and a fully discrete headphone stage, it offers great flexibility to use in personal and loudspeaker-based systems. At its heart is a fully discrete architecture that bridges classic R2R principles with modern usability, flexibility, and future-proofing.<\/p>\n

Like all LAiV DACs, the Verse is built around a proprietary discrete R2R ladder DAC. It offers a choice between NOS (no oversampling) and SRC (sample rate conversion) to suit individual needs. Additionally, the DAC supports native 1-bit DSD processing and features a switchable integrated sampling-rate converter, providing full control over PCM and DSD playback behavior. In SRC mode, you can select 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x PCM oversampling, and even resample to DSD 64, 128, 256, and 512! Finally, the digital PCM filter can be switched in SRC mode between Sharp and Slow.<\/p>\n

The Verse offers USB, Optical, Coax, and I2S inputs and provides the analog output signal on single-ended RCA and Balanced XLR. The output can be set to Fixed to operate as a pure DAC, or to Variable to enable the built-in analog preamplifier. The headphone amplifier section offers a Balanced 4.4 mm jack, approx. 11 Vrms at \u2264 1100 mW at 5.1 \u03a9, and a <\/span>Single-Ended 6.35 mm jack, approx. 5.5 Vrms, at \u2264 290 mW at 2.6 \u03a9. The <\/span>headphone section can be enabled separately, and the Verse offers v<\/span>arious settings to fine-tune it. I’ll dive deeper into all the possibilities in the listening section further below.<\/p>\n

The Verse’s I2S input works out of the box with other LAiV products and is additionally fully configurable to work with all other manufacturers’ products. The Verse goes yet another step further by allowing the user to select the clock source. The DAC can slave to the input clock using its own clock in Local mode (the default for the Verse and normal for S\/PDIF and I2S), or be clocked directly by the source clock. When selecting \u2018I2S\u2019 for the clock setting, the Verse will automatically switch to the local clock if the I2S clock becomes unstable or incompatible, and switch back once it stabilizes. The Verse will also switch to the local clock when other digital inputs are selected.<\/p>\n

The Verse also lets you choose how DSD playback is handled. The DAC can be set to Native for true 1-bit DSD processing without conversion to PCM. In this mode, DSD remains in its original 1-bit form to preserve its natural characteristics. When setting the DSD setting to Multibit, DSD is converted to PCM, which can improve dynamic range and reduce noise. When switching between PCM and 1-bit DSD, a brief DC offset change may occur, which can be heard as a popping sound at the start of playback.<\/p>\n

All information and controls can be accessed through the Verse’s front panel’s settings menu button, rotary control, and enter button. The controls on the front panel are similar to those on the IR remote control. All the settings and information are shown on the four-character LED Running Text Display. The display can be set to auto-dim and\/or auto-power-off as desired. Since it is LED, there is no risk of burn-in, so it can also be left on indefinitely.<\/p>\n

Review Context<\/h3>\n

The LAiV Verse DAC was listened to in the main system<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>comprised of the CH Precision C1.2<\/a> DAC, CH Precision L1<\/a> preamplifier, and CH Precision A1.5<\/a> power amp. <\/span>Digital sources include the Antipodes Oladra<\/a> and Grimm MU1<\/a> music servers. All interlinks are Driade Flow Link Reference 808<\/a>, and the speaker cables are Driade Flow Reference 808<\/a>. Speakers used are the Duetta Signature (recently fitted with new foils). All components (including review components) are powered by the PS Audio P20<\/a> PowerPlant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Listening<\/h3>\n

Set up in the main system with recently refurbished Apogee Duetta Signature speakers, connected with a coaxial output from the Grimm MU1 server, the Verse makes a great first impression. The bass is well-controlled, upbeat, and articulate, and this level of precision extends across the frequency range. While such properties can sometimes lead to a dry or analytical sound, the Verse maintains a pleasant smoothness and great fluidity, with a delicate, airy treble.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Verse also includes an I2S input, which typically delivers better performance than S\/PDIF. However, not many source components have an I2S output, and neither does the Grimm server. To circumvent this, I used the LAiV uDDC<\/a>, a digital-to-digital converter that accepts a wide range of inputs (Coax, USB, I2S, and AES\/EBU), reclocks the signal, and outputs a clean I2S signal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To provide an unprocessed source, I used a direct USB connection from the MU1 to the uDDC. With the uDDC providing a music signal via I2S, as is typical for this format, the sound is even better than with the more traditional formats. Compared with the coax input, the I2S connection further enhances precision, crispness, and expression without introducing drawbacks. Even though the sound is now even more detailed, there is no dryness, which makes it easy to listen to.<\/p>\n

Next: I2S, NOS, USB, uDAC, and direct to power amp<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I2S with a twist<\/h3>\n

Even if your source does not support I2S, I still recommend reading the following, as it underlines the Verse’s versatility. That said, I now wonder whether this is what inspired its name.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A standard I2S connection is already an improvement over S\/PDIF, but the Verse DAC goes a significant step further than other DACs I know by allowing users to select the I2S input clock source. In digital systems, the music signal must always be locked to a clock. When the source and DAC are physically separate, they must be synchronized. Typically, DACs synchronize their internal clock to the source clock (referred to as “slave-mode” for traditional interfaces or “synchronous mode” for USB connections). This happens whether the clock signal is embedded in the music signal (muxed), as in S\/PDIF or AES\/EBU, or delivered separately, as in I2S. Interestingly, and uniquely in this price class, the Verse can be configured to either slave to the input clock (the default) or, when the source has a high-quality clock, be clocked\u00a0directly<\/em> by the source<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The last time I experimented with an internal\/external clock-switching option was on my Wadia 861 CD player, which combined a CD transport and DAC in a single housing. With that player, 3D imaging and soundstaging improved significantly when the direct source clock was selected.<\/p>\n

With this prior clocking experience in mind, I was curious whether the difference would be equally pronounced with the Verse. As hoped, the sound flows more freely, and the soundstage is deeper and larger when using the uDDC to create an I2S source and setting the Verse to I2S Local mode. Now, consider that the source used for the uDDC was USB, and imagine how natural and liquid a compatible CD transport with a direct I2S output could sound. In short, the I2S connection is well worth investigating.<\/p>\n

NOS\/OS<\/h3>\n

I tried both options, but as always, I prefer NOS for its more articulate, tangible, pure, and direct sound. However, to some ears, NOS can sound relatively dry or sober. When choosing an oversampling mode, the Verse offers a wide range of options, including resampling to DSD 64, 128, 256, and 512, a unique feature at this price point. Using DSD 16x, for instance, the sound becomes smoother and more relaxed, and the soundstage appears more expansive. The other resampling modes offer subtle differences, with some settings sounding more typically DSD and others closer to PCM. This allows the user to precisely tweak the sound to their liking.<\/p>\n

USB<\/h3>\n

For CD transports and many streamers, Coaxial and AES\/EBU are usually the only options. Most servers offer only a USB output. I have often noted how USB can perform technically very well, but can sound more mechanical than traditional formats. However, the quality and balance ultimately depend on the USB interfaces at both ends. In this case, with the Verse, I immediately enjoyed the USB performance. To my ears, USB with the Verse sounds better than S\/PDIF and should be considered the preferred connection method unless you are aiming for a rounder, sweeter sound. USB does not fully match I2S in its superb balance between precision and musical flow, but it is a worthy alternative. With the Verse, it sounds simultaneously more precisely defined and more refined, and more direct and realistic.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Compared to the uDAC<\/h3>\n

It’s easy to underestimate the LAiV uDAC,<\/a> given that it is only half the size of the Verse. This micro DAC is priced similarly to the Verse while offering far fewer options. For instance, it lacks volume control, DSD resampling, and headphone connections. So, what’s the deal? It’s simple: higher sound quality.<\/p>\n

While the Verse sounds very good, the uDAC offers a few notable improvements. For instance, its bass performance is on par with the Harmony DAC’s bass, which is considerably more robust and prominent than the Verse’s. Further, while the Verse sounds very far from technical, the uDAC has a more realistic timbre, which makes real acoustic instruments sound more convincing. Lastly, the uDAC presents a cleaner, more direct image, with slightly more expressive dynamic behavior. On the other hand, the uDAC is stricter and considerably less forgiving than the Verse. The difference between Coax and USB remains, but it seems smaller than with the Verse. It appears that the Verse benefits more from the technically more accurate USB interface, while the uDAC sounds excellent with both. Overall, the uDAC remains a good alternative for those who already have a preamp and do not need headphone connections.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Back to the Verse<\/h3>\n

After hearing the uDAC, the Verse still delivers very good tightness and articulation. There is no dryness, the resolution is excellent, the treble is fluid and refined, and the sound flows freely. However, the timbre, stature, and dynamic delivery feel less convincingly realistic than with the uDAC or the Harmony DAC. Of course, it’s only logical that something’s got to give, given that the Verse is more affordable yet offers more functionality. Nonetheless, the Verse already performs better than you’d expect from a ‘simple’ DAC. And here’s the crux of the matter: the Verse is not a simple DAC! It is far more advanced than it appears: it offers, in addition to a built-in headphone amplifier with a standard output and a balanced 4.4mm output, unique I2S connectivity, DSD resampling, and an analog volume control that not only powers the headphone amp but can also be used for the main XLR and RCA outputs.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Direct to Power Amp<\/h3>\n

With variable output selected, the Verse can be directly connected to a power amplifier. LAiV actually offers an excellent option for this with their GAnM mono power amplifiers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Once again, the Verse performs surprisingly well. Directly connected to the GAnMs, the Verse makes a strong case for itself, particularly in control, resolution, neutrality, propulsion, pacing, and dynamics. For this amount of money, I honestly would not know how the performance could be bettered.<\/p>\n

Of course, once we start comparing to higher-tier options, things become relative again.\u00a0As remarkably good as it is, the Verse is not a substitute for the LAiV HP2A<\/a> preamp. That shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise, given that the HP2A costs a whopping 2000 euros more than the Verse while not including a DAC! The HP2A is actually so good that I consider it an entry-level high-end preamp. It’s better than any other preamplifier I\u2019ve heard at this price, and it still offers serious competition to high-end preamplifiers that cost double or more. Understandably, the Verse doesn\u2019t go that far. However, it is excellent for its price point.<\/p>\n

Once I switch off my critical assessment mode and let the music play, I note how the Verse consistently relays the music with sweetness and integrity. It simply never detracts from the musical delivery. Its performance can be bettered, but its sins are of omission, with virtually none of commission.<\/p>\n

Next: Headphone Listening, HP2A, and Conclusion<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Headphone Listening<\/h3>\n

As dedicated as I am to listening with loudspeakers, I’m not a huge headphone enthusiast. Nevertheless, I’ve heard headphones across all price ranges, from the cheapest earbuds to mid-range Sennheisers such as the\u00a0HD-650,<\/a>\u00a0to earbuds that outperform mid-range Sennheisers, to high-end planar magnetic headphones such as the\u00a0Audeze LCD-1<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0HifiMan Arya Stealth<\/a>, and the best I have heard so far, the RAAL Requisite CA-1a<\/a>. I personally only own a basic pair of Sennheisers, so I asked my good friend NvM, who is most definitely a headphone aficionado, to come over and bring\u00a0one or more of his high-end headphones. This time, he only brought his HifiMan Arya Stealth, which is both my and his favorite.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I started listening with the Arya headphones using the stock cable with a standard 6.3 mm connector. With the gain set to Medium in the Verse’s menu, the built-in amplifier clearly has enough power to drive the Arya Stealth well, delivering a transparent, detailed, yet smooth and relaxed sound. The Verse, in its headphone-amp guise, reminds me of the\u00a0Wattson Madison<\/a>, though it is not quite as full-bodied, lush, or<\/span> smooth. The Verse is leaner and feels less powerful in the bass, but in turn, it does have excellent articulation and precision. Does the Verse really offer competition at only a third of the cost? Without a direct comparison, I can’t be sure, but I can say it’s less off than the price difference might suggest. Of course, the Wattson includes a full-fledged streaming endpoint and an app to control all of its functions, which are also great selling points.<\/p>\n

When selecting Low gain (the Verse’s default), the music becomes sweeter and more relaxed (more like the Wattson in these regards), but also less upbeat and enthusiastic. The Arya does like a bit of drive, so that makes sense. The Verse’s High gain setting, however, offers an interesting alternative. On the one hand, this setting further increases tightness, transient precision, and expression, which certainly appeals to me, but on the other hand, the extra control also makes it slightly less soothing. Nevertheless, for those who prioritize realism, the greater precision will be compelling.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Switching from the Arya’s stock cable to a 4.4 mm balanced variant, the Verse continues to impress me with its even more accurate sound while remaining fluid and refined. However, the extra precision of this cable is a two-edged sword: it goes three steps further than choosing High gain over Medium gain, resulting in a more stringent, analytical delivery. This way, you hear everything in the recording, for better or for worse. But since the Verse has both outputs available, there’s nothing stopping a dedicated headphone fanatic from maintaining different cables and swapping between them as desired.<\/p>\n

After this last test using headphones, I must say that the Verse surprised me even more than it did when I used it in my system with the loudspeakers. Honestly, with the Arya Stealth, everything I played was so engaging and satisfying that I wondered whether I truly needed<\/em> higher-quality sound. Of course, past experiences had already primed me, so I knew that more was possible. But as long as I was not making direct comparisons, I did not feel I was missing anything. Of course, that left me with no choice but to compare it with the best LAiV has to offer.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Compared to Harmony DAC and HP2A<\/h3>\n

Stepping up to the LAiV Harmony DAC<\/a> with the HP2A preamplifier<\/a> quickly proved that there was indeed quite a bit more to be had. Improvements included much more robust bass, increased resolution and precision, better instrument separation, a more realistic timbre, and greater overall conviction. This was definitely more realistic and higher-end, and I sure preferred it. But did the dearer combo also provide a deeper emotional connection? Honestly, not really. But if you want to enjoy deep musicality as well as satisfy your desire for technical precision (as I know I do…), the big stack offers that, and more.<\/p>\n

Finally, to complete the comparisons, I connected the uDAC instead of the Harmony DAC. Sure enough, the uDAC and HP2A combo still provides superior sound in many respects, but after hearing the Harmony DAC, it was evident that the uDAC does not reach true high-end levels of refinement and fluidity. And, interestingly, this is what the Verse feels closer to. It’s not as solid and precise, but it does provide a superb balance between liquid fluidity and refinement on the one hand, and precision and control on the other.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

The LAiV Verse DAC goes beyond a basic DAC with a proprietary discrete R2R ladder, analog volume control, discrete output preamp, and discrete headphone amplification stage. Whether used as a fixed-volume DAC, as a DAC + preamp feeding a power amp, or as a headphone amp, the Verse delivers a precise and articulate yet fluid, smooth, and refined sound. While it does not quite match the realism and bass authority of LAiV\u2019s higher-end Harmony DAC\/HP2A or uDAC\/HP2A preamp combinations, it offers greater flexibility and features at a considerably lower price point.<\/p>\n

The Verse stands out as a highly capable, flexible, and musically satisfying DAC and headphone amplifier that brings many key LAiV aspects to a more attainable level, with only minor compromises compared to the top-tier models that cost multiples more.<\/p>\n
