Due to my highly positive experiences with Playback Designs’ digital components, I immediately agreed when my French contact, Marc Loubeau of Prestige Audio Diffusion, asked me to review the Playback Designs SPA-8 stereo power amplifier. During the phone call, he mentioned that this was a very large and heavy amplifier, but clearly, I did not think it through at that time, as its true heft did not fully register until I saw it in person later.<\/p>\n

Measuring 73 cm wide, 86 cm deep, and 34 cm tall, and weighing 137 kg, the Playback Designs SPA-8 stereo power amplifier can truly be described as an absolute beast. I mean, this amp is 73 cm wide<\/em>! Even very large amplifiers are rarely more than 73 cm deep<\/em>. As one can imagine, the crate in which this amplifier is shipped is even more massive, and as it turned out, it’s impossible to get it into my apartment unless it is fully unpacked. However, at 137 kg and requiring four persons to carry it, we decided it was best to take an alternative approach for this review.<\/p>\n

Although I included myself in the photo above as a size reference, I still think the amplifier appears much smaller than it actually is.<\/em><\/p>\n

An alternative review approach<\/h3>\n

Instead of conducting a comprehensive review using my reference system, I will evaluate the SPA-8 amplifier at the\u00a0Aequo Audio<\/a> showroom and their new Ensium loudspeakers<\/a> on two separate occasions. <\/span><\/p>\n

In this Quick Impression article, I will share my initial experience listening to the amplifier with Aequo Audio Ensium loudspeakers. These speakers are brand-new, and I have not yet had the opportunity to hear them before, hence the Quick Impression article rather than a full-fledged in-depth review. <\/span>Nevertheless, I will conduct A-B comparisons in this same setup using WestminsterLab amplifiers that I have reviewed and am familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following this Quick Impression article, I will perform an in-depth review of the Ensium loudspeakers in my listening room. With a solid understanding of the speakers’ capabilities, I will then return to the Aequo Audio showroom to re-evaluate the SPA-8 amplifier.<\/span><\/p>\n

Playback Designs SPA-8<\/h3>\n

The SPA-8 was introduced and demonstrated for the first time at the 2019 Munich High End Show. This amplifier was designed to showcase Playback Designs\u2019 capabilities in amplification, with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art product that would be the ideal companion for the brand’s Dream Series digital sources. Although the amplifier is included in the product catalog, it is available only by special order and with a lead time. This beast of an amplifier is intended for customers who seek the very best that the brand has to offer\u2014regardless of weight, size, or cost.<\/p>\n

The SPA-8 is an extremely potent amplifier, and one of the few in existence that doubles its output from 800 Watts into 8 Ohms to 1,600 Watts into 4 Ohms, and doubles again to 3,200 Watts into 2 Ohms. As a Playback Designs audio component, I would expect this amplifier to be not only very potent but also highly musical.<\/span><\/p>\n

SPA-8 is built with a discrete and complementary Class A input stage and a Class AB output stage using 20 200-Watt BJ transistors per channel. Two toroidal transformers with a capacity of 1,800 Watts and a filter capacitance of 294,000 \u03bcF provide plenty of energy. The total harmonic distortion is an extremely low 0.00054 percent at 1 kilohertz and 400 Watts of output power into an 8-ohm load.<\/span><\/p>\n

The amplifier is controlled and protected by a dual microprocessor (one per channel). The front panel display features various modes of operation and can display either a discreet dot, the musical dynamics, volume level, or the words “Playback Designs”. Naturally, the display brightness is also adjustable.<\/p>\n

System Context<\/h3>\n

The Aequo Audio demo system consists of the following components: the Taiko Audio Extreme Music Server, connected via USB to the Playback Designs MPT-8<\/a>, which was connected via PLINK to the MPD-8<\/a>, which was connected to the WestminsterLab Quest<\/a> preamp. This preamp then feeds either the matching Rei<\/a> mono power amplifiers or the Playback Designs SPA-8 stereo power amplifier. The system uses Aequo Audio cables throughout.<\/p>\n

The speakers deserve their own review, but in brief, the Aequo Audio Adamantis and Ensium (respectively, fully passive and active bass versions) are the result of ten years of exhaustive research into driver and cabinet technology. The cabinets are constructed from a newly developed proprietary material called Diluvite. When cast in its complex shape, it is twice as stiff as aluminum and offers ten times better damping from 1 to 100,000 Hz.<\/p>\n

Like the Aequo Audio Stilla, the Ensium has an active bass section powered by an Ncore amplifier and controlled by fully analog ARPEC (Analogue Room size and Placement Extension Control) electronics. The ARPEC’s two rotary controls enable easy and intuitive adjustments for room and placement. Keeping the signal in the analog domain neatly avoids any phase alignment issues with the other drivers.<\/p>\n

The SPA-8 looks stunningly beautiful with its curvaceous enclosure, even though its size becomes more evident in the photo above. Just look at how it makes the WestminsterLab Rei power amplifiers appear to be half their actual 23-cm width. Also, note that the Ensium speakers appear compact, but they actually measure 42 cm in width and 116 cm in height. Now, recall that this amplifier is 73 cm wide!<\/p>\n

Next: Listening<\/em><\/p>\n

Listening<\/h3>\n

Although this was my first encounter with the Ensium, I was already familiar with Aequo Audio loudspeakers, having previously reviewed the Stilla<\/a> and Stilla Active<\/a> models. Although the Ensium has an active bass section, it is still transparent to the source. And contrary to popular belief, it is usually actually the midrange that consumes most power, not the bass.<\/p>\n

When I entered the room, the SPA-8 was already connected and had been playing for most of the day, so the amplifier was well warmed up, even though its chassis barely felt warm to the touch. It seems that the heat dissipates very evenly over the amplifier’s massive surface. The amplifier uses 300 Watts in idle, and, of course, the heat has to go somewhere. Indeed, Aequo Audio’s Ivo and Paul confirmed that the room felt warmer once the amplifier was powered up.<\/p>\n

Playing a selection of familiar music, the first thing I noticed was the clear, pure, and communicative midrange. However, rather than standing out from the mix, it was well-integrated. Neither lean nor shouty or overbearing, the midrange was realistic and inviting, and supported by a weighty but fast and expressive bass. This was what surprised me most about the SPA-8, because all amplifiers I had heard with this much power were characterized by either ponderous thickness, blur, restrained pacing, or all of these characteristics at once. Not so the SPA-8. It offered upbeat and inviting pacing, along with outstanding dynamic behavior, and clearly had power to spare; yet it never sounded processed or technical in the slightest. Its timbre was also clearly very natural. There was no smear or coloration that I could detect, and although the sound was liquid and free-flowing, it was not overly lush. Nevertheless, it had a decidedly un-electronic, natural, and tonally richly saturated portrayal of everything I played.<\/p>\n

When swapping to the WestminsterLab Rei monos, we were all surprised by the massive difference. This was not a matter of gradations: it was night and day. It took me a minute or two to adjust, but then I confirmed that the Reis do indeed also sound excellent, even if they have a very different presentation from the Playback Designs SPA-8. As regular readers will know from my WestminsterLab review, I knew beforehand that the Reis are exceedingly neutral amplifiers, to the point of being entirely anonymous, and I have praised them for this quality. Heck, I found them even crisper and more direct than my CH Precision A1.5 amplifier. Nevertheless, I did not feel they lacked body or saturation in my reference system. It is worth noting that this is also precisely what the brand strives to deliver. On the other hand, I have found from my reviews of Playback Designs’ audio components, including the MPT-8 and MPD-8 currently in use, that they sound very natural and possess an analog-like sense of continuity and liquidity. This goes some way to explaining the perceived differences. The Playback Designs components indeed sound a little richer harmonically than my CH equipment, and by extension, the WestminsterLab Rei mono power amplifiers.<\/p>\n

Naturally, this is only a superficial comparison of two very different products that have a significant price disparity, with the goal to help me understand the sound of the SPA-8 in this unfamiliar context. To truly appreciate the full performance of this amplifier, it should be compared to the largest, heaviest, and most powerful units out there, such as Gryphon, Vitus, Soulution, CH Precision, MSB, D’Agostino, and Halcro.<\/p>\n

Additionally, going from my earlier experience with the Aequo Audio Stilla loudspeakers, I think it’s safe to say that the Aequo Audio Ensium’s presentation differs significantly from the Magico S1 MkII’s that I used when reviewing the Stillas, which offsets my mental reference, if that could even be considered reliable after this time. However, when listening with the Playback Designs SPA-8 on the Ensiums, with all the tracks I played, I never felt that the sound was fuller, warmer, or richer than what I consider natural. With this in mind, it seems that the SPA-8 is true to Playback Designs’ “house sound”: liquid, harmonically rich, and effortless, while remaining subjectively very neutral.<\/p>\n

As a side note, whether desirable or not, I find that big power amplifiers can actually enhance the spaciousness compared to smaller or lower-power equivalents. However, this is not necessarily an accurate reproduction of what’s recorded. Further, the increase in size often comes at the cost of reduced clarity or even a sense of blur. The Reis, on the other hand, as pure and direct as they are, do not sound small per se, but they clearly do not create as large a soundstage as the SPA-8. So, do the Reis sound smaller than reality, or does the SPA-8 add some character after all? Well, if the Reis are the measure for utter neutrality, maybe it does, but I honestly can’t say that I heard it that way until we made the direct comparison.<\/p>\n

For a more detailed analysis, I’d need to hear the amplifier in a more familiar environment, or with speakers that I am more familiar with. This is where the in-depth Aequo Audio Ensium review comes in. Following that review, I will return to the Aequo Audio showroom once more to refine my experience with the big, bold, yet beautiful SPA-8. On that occasion, I will also listen to the SPA-8 amplifier being fed directly from the MPD-8 Dream DAC’s analog outputs, as recommended by Playback Designs.<\/p>\n

Preliminary Conclusion<\/h3>\n

Pending a deeper investigation, based on my preliminary experience, I believe the SPA-8 represents an ideal marriage between muscle and musicality. In my opinion, there are only a handful of truly great amplifiers in the world, and I have a feeling the SPA-8 is one of them. Naturally, that remains to be confirmed.<\/p>\n

Naturally, its price makes it unattainable for most, but if the budget allows, the SPA-8 is definitely worth considering. Delivery and installation are best left to a professional moving company. If that can be arranged, I highly recommend taking it for a test run. If my descriptions resonate with you, there’s a good chance the moving company need not return!<\/p>\n
