Once considered the only aspect that mattered, it’s rare among cable manufacturers these days to quote measurements, let alone focus on measured perfection. The last company I recall that did this was Analysis Plus, which provided measurements indicating that their Oval cables were better at reproducing square waves. That seems like ages ago, and today, measurements are largely considered irrelevant when it comes to cables. This is understandable, especially since such measurements do not always correlate with what is perceived when listening to them. These days, companies often highlight exotic or special materials, geometries, and treatments, without mentioning the electrical properties.<\/p>\n

SMR Cable Technologies takes a different approach, and they do not mince words, according to their tagline: “Measurably Superior. Audibly Sublime.”<\/p>\n

About SMR Cable Technologies<\/h3>\n

The Vanish line of loudspeaker cables was created by Steven M. Raedy, P.E., who has two degrees in electrical power engineering and over 30 years of experience in developing power electronic products and analyzing electric utility power systems. Mr. Raedy also invented and developed the first commercially available multi-kilowatt inductive charging system for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n

The designs of SMR Cable Technologies’ loudspeaker cables are based on years of experience in refining high-efficiency and accurate designs, ensuring effective management of electric and magnetic fields.<\/p>\n

Vanish Range<\/h3>\n

The Vanish range is designed and developed to provide the discerning listener with a product that SMR believes to be equal or superior to any cable on the market at any price. More specifically, the cables are designed to be sonically invisible at all audio frequencies, and they are said to be unmatched in relaying all of the information at the dynamic and high-frequency limits of the finest amplifiers and loudspeakers. The result, according to the manufacturer, is zero discernible signal loss between the amplifier and speakers. Hence, VANISH.<\/p>\n

While one would never do this in practice, Vanish 334 cables can actually conduct over 50A of current at 20 kHz all day long (25,000 Watts into an 8 Ohm load!!) and still run well below the cable rating. At normal levels, the signal loss of Vanish cables is essentially negligible.<\/p>\n

Vanish cables are custom-made to order in Raleigh, NC, USA. Every cable is individually serialized and tested to quantify all performance metrics and verify adherence to the design and quality standards.<\/p>\n

NASA-Grade Perfection in Gold Plating<\/h3>\n

SMR has contracted the specialist plating company Epner<\/a> for the plating of its connectors. While Epner may not be a familiar name in audiophile circles, they are renowned for their Laser Gold process, which has also been utilized for NASA’s Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. Now, that same technology is used to plate Vanish loudspeaker terminals. This plating is 99.99% pure gold and features a knoop scale hardness of nearly 200.<\/p>\n

Vanish Terminations<\/h3>\n

“The Vanish termination is a cold weld, metal-to-metal fusion so complete, electrical resistance becomes virtually non-existent with no degradation.” As SMR notes, even with \u2018Audiophile\u2019 cables, terminations are often an afterthought. Terminations that utilize screw pressure to clamp against the side of a conductor result in minimal actual contact area between the sides of a few conductor strands. Screws are designed to fasten, not to create a secure, low-resistance, reliable contact. These terminations can lead to contamination of the contact surfaces and degrade over time as the cable and screw housings age. Soldered connections are an improvement over mechanical connections, but are inherently inconsistent and subject to fatigue and cracking over time. Solder also tends to wick up conductor strands, stressing the conductor where the solder ends. Nevertheless, most litz cable is terminated using solder, as this is the easiest method to deal with the individual strand insulation.<\/p>\n

The best possible termination,\u00a0 not just according to SMR, but in general, is a uniformly crimped, cold-weld termination. Vanish cables are terminated by first removing the litz insulation using a unique methodology, and then immediately crimping over the remaining pure copper strands and environmentally sealing the assembly to prevent oxidation. The SMR crimping process utilizes a 13-ton hydraulic press that applies force evenly around the cable’s diameter, creating a uniform, durable, and consistent cold weld connection with essentially zero contact resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vanish 334<\/h3>\n

Vanish 334 is the flagship speaker cable from SMR, which I will review in this article. The cable is constructed of four AWG #7 litz conductors woven in a tightly coupled configuration, using two conductors per polarity run, resulting in an equivalent AWG #4 conductor cable.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Each Vanish 334 cable polarity run consists of nearly one thousand individually enameled, oxygen-free conductors, each with a diameter far below the electromagnetic skin depth of copper at the upper end of the audio frequency range, but not so fine that proximity effect losses are introduced. This allows for consistent resistance across the frequency range, while also benefiting from the low resistance and inductance of a massive cross-sectional area cable, without the tradeoffs in capacitance. In contrast, most ‘audiophile’ cables are typically multi-stranded but do not use a litz configuration with fine, individually insulated strands, resulting in unavoidable compromises.<\/p>\n

Vanish 287<\/h3>\n

SMR also offers a more affordable version of the Vanish 334 cable, called the Vanish 287, not reviewed here. The Vanish 287 is constructed with less copper than the Vanish 334 line, but is made using the same high-quality materials, construction, and attention to detail as the Vanish 334 cables.<\/p>\n

Available Terminations<\/h3>\n

The Vanish speaker cables are available in 4-foot, 6-foot, 8-foot, and 10-foot lengths, and can be ordered with either 30-degree spades or 90-degree spades.<\/p>\n

The speaker end can also be configured as bi-wire or tri-wire. Finally, SMR Cable Technologies also offers a complete custom cable termination solution to meet specific system needs.<\/p>\n

Running In<\/h3>\n

The Vanish cables have been designed to be 100% bi-directional, meaning there are no markings to indicate the direction, as the amplifier and speaker ends are interchangeable.\u00a0SMR does not provide recommendations for the amount of required running in. The cables under review have seen 10A of current in both directions for a few minutes, as is necessary for terminal contact resistance tests. Apart\u00a0from this, they are brand new.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the cables sounded smooth, relaxed, and refined from the very first seconds of use. With prolonged use, I found them to gain a bit more conviction and dynamic expression, but otherwise, I heard very little in the way of running in.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Review Context<\/h3>\n

The Vanish speaker cables were listened to in the <\/span>main system<\/a>, which currently consists of the <\/span>CH Precision L1<\/a> preamplifier, <\/span>CH Precision A1.5<\/a> power amp, LAiV GAnM<\/a> power amplifiers, Magico S1 MkII, Apogee Centaur-, and Duetta Signature speakers, the latter recently fitted with new foils. <\/span>Digital sources were the Antipodes Oladra<\/a> and Grimm MU1<\/a> music servers. All interlinks are Driade Flow Link Reference 808<\/a>, and the usual speaker cables are Driade Flow Reference 808<\/a>. All components are powered by the PS Audio P20<\/a> PowerPlant.<\/p>\n

Neutrality<\/h3>\n

Whether it is good practice or not, cables are often used as a tuning method. Early in the audiophile quest, this can lead to overcompensation, but at a certain point, many audiophiles strive for neutrality. Of course, the big question is what exactly constitutes neutrality. As I heard more and more cables, a pattern emerged where some cables pulled the sound in a smoother, lusher, or warmer direction, while others pulled the sound in a dryer, leaner, cooler, more analytical, or even clinical direction. Between these extremes lies a range of relatively neutral cables. While that seems entirely logical, it is important to keep in mind that the assessment of neutrality is still, in part, dependent on the system components, room acoustics, and personal preferences. Suppose a system and room tend to pull the sound in a specific direction, the natural tendency is to apply cables that pull the sound in the opposite direction, so that the overall presentation becomes more balanced. The danger here is that a skewed perception can emerge of what constitutes neutrality.<\/p>\n

This is why I feel it is essential to attend live performances and audio shows, and listen to various systems in different rooms. At some point, the accumulated experience will lead to an aggregate understanding of the variables, and with it, the importance of neutrality.<\/p>\n

Despite my best efforts to mitigate room modes, reflections, and power dependencies, my listening environment is not perfect. It absorbs a bit of energy at certain low frequencies, and generally produces a sound that is slightly sweet and forgiving. In essence, this makes warm components sound warmer than they are, and it allows for the use of analytical components that, in a more barebones-sounding system, could lean towards sounding too cool or a little clinical. Armed with this knowledge, I naturally take this into account in my reviews. However, there is no denying that it remains a factor in my assessments of components and cables. This is why I always try to make direct comparisons with other products in the same category, as this helps describe their relative performance.<\/p>\n

Given my room’s tendency to smoothness, I generally prefer to use components and accessories that do not add extra warmth and are essentially neutral to slightly analytical. However, I am careful not to let the system lean over into a clinical or anemic performance. I am all about precision and neutrality, but I am also careful not to lose the musicality; otherwise, what’s the point?<\/p>\n

As regular readers will know, I normally use Driade Flow Reference 808 speaker cables, which work very well with my room and system, and especially with the Magico S1 MkII speakers. These speakers are very highly resolving and essentially in the neutral zone, but unlike the older Q-series, they are definitely on the voluptuous, smooth, and forgiving side.\u00a0I have recently added Apogee Centaurs and newly refurbished Duettas to my speaker arsenal, both speakers that are even more transparent than the Magicos, while also being less forgiving. I will involve all three for this review.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Listening – Apogee Centaur<\/h3>\n

Connected between the LAiV GaNMs or the CH Precision A1.5 and the Apogee Centaurs, the Vanish 334 makes the inherently crisp, clean, and direct-sounding speakers sound considerably larger, fuller, smoother, and more harmonically rich. Initially, the sound feels less tight, impulsive, and expressive than with the Driades, but the larger soundstage and riper tonality fit the speakers well.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

While the cable works well with the GaNMs, the CH A1.5 makes for a better match. The additional fluidity, delicacy, and air that the Swiss amp has on offer are reflected particularly well with the Vanish 334.<\/p>\n

The Driade cables are admittedly a little lean in the bass and not especially rich-sounding. In that regard, it’s fair to say they are not 100% absolutely neutral in terms of timbre and fullness. But they have very pure and clean transient behavior with no edge or added brightness, and I consider them to be otherwise extremely neutral. With this in mind, can a fuller, smoother, and harmonically richer sound be considered more neutral than Driade cable? I honestly do not know, and can only report relative differences.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In any case, while the Vanish 334 cables are comparatively darker and not as crisp and airy as the Driade, they are remarkably fluid and refined, particularly free-flowing, and more organic, while possessing the same level of resolution. An interesting aspect of the Vanish 334 is that, despite my system’s tendency toward smoothness, I do not regard these cables as warm-sounding.<\/p>\n

The midrange is richer in harmonics, more deeply saturated, and more voluminous, resulting in instruments and musicians being portrayed with more body and greater depth. However, it is all presented in a very natural and uncolored manner, without added creaminess or thickness.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After a few tracks, I noticed that I had begun to focus less on technical aspects and more on the music itself. This is when it hit me. These cables are not the analytically precise conductors one might expect from products marketed as “vanishing.” Instead, they deliver impressive resolution and refinement while maintaining a genuinely sweet musicality. Importantly, they do not add warmth, thickness, or muddiness to the sound.<\/p>\n

Notably, these cables provide a decidedly non-technical performance that is very easy to listen to. While not the most articulate or expressive cables I’ve heard, they are indeed very neutral and allow one to enjoy all musical styles without making lesser recordings unlistenable.<\/p>\n

Above all, beyond their relaxed nature, these Vanish 334 cables “simply” do not call attention to themselves and are essentially chameleons. They allow the music to breathe and flow naturally.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Listening – Apogee Duetta<\/h3>\n

One might expect two Apogee speakers to sound similar, but the Centaur and Duetta Signature are actually quite different. While both models are two-way designs featuring ribbon midrange\/tweeter sections, the main distinction lies in their woofers. The Duetta features a full-range woofer foil, whereas the Centaur utilizes a dynamic woofer in a closed cabinet. Along with more minor generational differences in the ribbons and crossover, this has a significant combined impact on their sound.<\/p>\n

Switching from the Centaurs to the Apogee Duettas, which were fitted with new Graz foils just a few weeks ago, the Vanish 334 cables work their magic again by providing a remarkably smooth, lush, and fluid sound with very good resolution that serves the musical message rather than functioning as a magnifying glass. The sound is clean and clear, yet there is zero edge or hardness. As with the Centaurs, but even more so, the sound flows effortlessly from the speakers, filling the room with a giant sound bubble.<\/p>\n

Despite their dipole nature, full-range dipoles and, to a lesser extent, hybrids with long ribbon tweeters,\u00a0 tend to sound less 3D than dynamic loudspeakers. When set up correctly, the Duettas definitely project both forward and backward, and they sound large by nature, but the imaging within the soundstage appears flatter than with the Magicos. This is where the Vanish 334 cables come to the rescue. Somehow, they manage to lend more body and depth to vocalists and instruments within the sound stage.<\/p>\n

One might not expect a truly deep or full bass from a Full-Range Ribbon speaker, and it is true that many planar magnetostatics struggle to produce credible bass. However, full-range Apogee Ribbon speakers stand out by delivering remarkably deep and impressively voluminous bass. In my room, and likely in most rooms, Duettas typically do not require any additional support. In this regard, the comparatively leaner-sounding Driade cables work better for me in this combination. Then again, the Duettas are also very revealing, and they also unveil that the Driade cables provide a less richly saturated and, in essence, more analytical rendition than the SMR Vanis 334.<\/p>\n

Listening – Magico S1 MkII<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Moving from the Apogees to my trusted Magico S1 MkIIs, I found that the Vanish 334 cables produce a predictably similar, sweetly musical performance. I should reiterate that the clean, sterile, and cool image that lingers in some people’s heads regarding Magico is very far from what the brand offers with the S-series. Unlike the Q-series that made the brand famous but also drew criticism, the S-series offers smoothness, warmth, and immense refinement.<\/p>\n

Much more so than the 3-way models, the 2-way Magicos are capable of remarkable 3D imaging, and the Vanish 334 fully enabled the S1 MkIIs to portray a room-filling sound with immense depth extending even beyond the rear wall. As with the two Apogees, the Vanish 334 behaves in a self-effacing manner, allowing the music to breathe freely.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

However, given the Magicos’ inherently rather voluptuous bass and well-behaved, silky treble, I found the balance a little too voluptuous and dark for my taste. This is not to say that the Vanish 334 emphasizes the bass. Instead, it confirms what I have always known about the Magicos: they are quite bass-heavy and require balancing with leaner, more articulate cables.<\/p>\n

With their unforced, naturally flowing, well-defined delivery, they remind me of Cardas Golden Reference, Transparent Reference XL, and Jorma Audio Unity. While it may seem trivial to compare speaker cables to power cables, the Vanish 334 cables also remind me of the overall balance provided by the GigaWatt PowerSync Ultra.<\/p>\n

In a landscape of cables that vary from sweet, smooth, lush, and warm on one end to clean, cool, tight, dry, and analytical on the other, I would position the Vanish 334 cables between the former and what I consider absolute neutrality.<\/p>\n

As always, achieving an ideal balance in an audio system requires careful matching and consideration of the specific variables. As it turns out, even with cables designed to have vanishingly little influence on the sound, the outcome can still vary based on factors such as the speakers, the room, and personal preferences.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

With their focus on measured perfection and Zero-Loss Vanish marketing, one might expect SMR cables to offer a balance similar to that of very clean and analytical cables, such as those made by Nordost, Anti-Cables, or FoilFlex. What they deliver is pretty much the opposite. The Vanish 334 cables prioritize musicality and emotional involvement over ultimate control and expression, providing a consistently smooth and immersive sound that fills the room effortlessly.<\/p>\n

These cables possess excellent resolution and transparency, but they never try to impress. Rather than functioning as a laboratory tool to seek and find imperfections, they unobtrusively present the music in a gently sweet, but otherwise chameleonlike manner, enabling it to flow naturally.<\/p>\n
