My experience encompasses various types, including belt-drive and direct-drive models, mass-loaded and suspended designs, and pivoting and tangential tonearms. I have also explored air-bearing systems, optical stylus designs, and a fully laser-based design. Naturally, Technics played a role in this. My experience with the brand was kicked off when my friend Wouter brought along a cheap, plasticky SL-J3 automatic tangential “jacket” player, soon to be followed by a range of other similar Technics players, with the SL-7, SL-10, and SL-15 as the crowning achievements. Of course, the SL-1200 series also played a part in this. It began with the brownish-black SL-1210MkII version, thanks again to Wouter and his turntable collection.

The Technics SL-1200 series is probably the most well-known turntable series of all time. Ask any person what a turntable looks like, and they will likely describe an SL-1200. Introduced in 1979, the MkII has been an utterly dependable player whenever it was on visit in my system during the last two decades, confirming its robust build quality.

The SL-1200MkII (or SL-1210MkII for the dark chassis version) always appealed to me with its dependable responsiveness and ease of operation. In my enthusiasm, I obtained a gently used SL-1200MkII in silver. This was at the time when a large online retailer was clearing out a surplus of new old stock replacement parts for the SL-1200, and I gladly took the occasion to substitute the lid and some other accessories. But soon enough, I started having doubts.

Sonically, I found the player a two-edged sword. On the one hand, it has an immediate, upfront, and exciting sound, but on the other hand, it lacks substance, saturation, and soul. While rhythmically surefooted, I always found it sounding gray, restless, and somewhat shouty. Interestingly, I found the tiny “jacket” players, such as the SL-7 and SL-10, to sound more full-bodied and emotionally more engaging than the SL-1200MkII, no matter which cartridge I tried. However, these jacket players never sounded as detailed and transparent as the SL-1200MkII, even when using the best Jico SAS T4P stylii, which can be considered similar to Micro-Ridge designs.

As a result, I sold my SL-1200MkII and investigated alternatives. Via a range of classic Thorens players, I fell for the very musical Origin Live Calypso Mk4, and later, the ultra-robust AVID Sequel SP. After reviewing a range of other esoteric players with unique, strong sonic qualities, it struck me that these thoroughbreds could be fiddly to get right, susceptible to deviation over time, or prone to misbehaving. I suppose it is a bit like owning a race car that can perform extraordinarily but requires continuous extra care and attention.

While the esoteric turntables each had unique, strong areas, there was invariably a less well-developed area with each player that, of course, attracted attention and proved impossible to cure. Of course, obtaining the ideal player-tonearm-cartridge marriage plays a huge part in this. I probably also had a stroke of bad luck with this, but eventually, I reached a level of frustration that all but killed the joy of playing records.

To my delight, the then-new Thorens TD1601 was easy to set up, behaved uniformly well, and sounded consistently excellent. Sure, it did not provide all the refined delicacy of the Origin Live, a Holbo, or a Bergmann, nor did it have the earth-shattering bass solidity and slam of the AVID. But its greatest strength was that it did everything just about equally well. Naturally, this turntable was also susceptible to Azimuth, VTF, VTA, and the tightness of all the adjustment screws, among other things, but when one setting was not optimal, the player just let you know about this by sounding less than optimal, rather than becoming unlistenable. This is the power of an integrated concept. With no apparent vices sticking out, it became easy to get back to simply enjoying the music. This brings me back to the Technics turntables.

Over the years, the standard SL-1200 evolved into the current Mk7 model in 2019, but it wasn’t until the Grand Class range was introduced that the brand again grabbed my attention. Released in 2016, the SL-1200G was intended to redefine the direct-drive turntable reference and appeal more to audiophiles. But to be perfectly honest, my initial response was that it was very pricey “for an SL-1200 derivative”. Would its performance truly justify being priced at four times that of the original 1200MkII? Inflation notwithstanding, the SL-1200G was visually very similar, and it was released at a time when excellent belt-driven solutions were available for less. So, I dismissed it and gave it no further thought. Little did I know… until I heard it as part of this review!

Before this review came into being, the world witnessed the release of the Limited Edition SL-1200GAE in 2016. The SL-1200G was launched later that same year, and then the more affordable stripped-down version of the SL-1200G, the SL-1200GR, in 2017. The SL-1200GR was later updated to the SL-1200GR2 in 2019. However, it wasn’t until the introduction of the elegantly redesigned SL-1300G in late 2024 that I finally took notice.

When several reviewers mentioned purchasing one of the G models as a substitute for their high-end players, I was intrigued. Upon reading up on the subject, it soon seemed evident that the minimalist SL-1300G inhabited the sweet spot. After all, it promised to deliver pretty much all the benefits of the more expensive SL-1200G, along with a few new tricks. Nevertheless, I wanted to find out for myself just how the Grand Class players compared and how they differed from the classic players that I knew so well.

SL-1200G

After the success of the limited edition SL-1200 GAE, Technics listened to their customers’ requests and decided to release a non-limited turntable with specifications closely mimicking those of the Limited Edition. It also eliminates the need for a large transformer and countermeasures for the ensuing mechanical vibrations and a switching frequency above 100 kHz limits the impact of noise on the music playback bandwidth.

In addition, the SL-1200GR2 features Current Injection Active Noise Canceling. Perhaps the two achieve a similar calmness and smoothness by different means, one using (more expensive) mechanical means and the other using (more cost-effective) electrical means, or perhaps there is (also) a bit of marketing speak going on. Nevertheless, they can be important considerations when deciding which model to get.

Arm height control ring lock

While the documentation mentions the players should not be used without the arm height lock engaged, no reason is given. As I found, the arm is still stable without it, and there is no problem with assessing the VTA/SRA and listening to the sound during adjustments without having the lock engaged. However, I did note that the lock has a significant and variable influence on the sound. The tightness and level of control in the reproduced sound are directly proportional to the strength used to turn the lock into position. One should be mindful of this when making cartridge comparisons. The big upside of this is that it can be used to one’s advantage. When the sound feels too loose or lacking in expression, increasing the force used to engage the lock will quickly address this, and vice versa.

Arm height control ring scale

The steps marked on the arm height ring scale of the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G are closer together than on the SL-1200G and classic SL-1200MkII. These smaller steps make the arm move more quickly up and down, but it also means there are fewer threads to secure contact between the arm base and the arm. This becomes evident by the amount of wobble the arm has when the lock is not engaged, which is significantly more with the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G than with the SL-1200G or the SL-1210MkII. Due to this, the impact on the sound when using the height lock or leaving it disengaged is also more significant with the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G. Incidentally, while none of the gimbal bearings have any play, the two newer players both retain a small amount of wobble, even with the lock engaged, whereas the SL-1200G and the SL-1210MkII are rock-solid with the lock engaged.

It’s also worth noting that the steps on the height ring scales represent different actual heights for the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G on the one hand and the SL-1200G and SL-1210MkII on the other. For instance, a reading of 1 mm on the SL-1200G’s VTA ring scale equals 3-4 mm on the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G.

It should also be noted that the height lock mechanism makes the helicoid rock off horizontally when locked in position, which affects the Azimuth. Although this is true for all 1200-series models, the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G are most affected by this, and the amount of Azimuth-tilt also ties in with the amount of force used to engage the lock. For this reason, it is best to adjust the Azimuth only with the arm height lock engaged.

Arm Lift Damping

The last point to note has no bearing on the sound but might still be a relevant consideration when deciding between these three players. Although the levers and actual lift mechanisms look precisely the same for all players, the damping of the lift is different. The SL-1200G’s lift feels very responsive, just like all Technics lifts, but it also operates smoothly and feels luxurious. With this lift, you can flick the lever all the way down, and the arm will move down very gently and precisely. The SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G lifts, however, have much less damping. Cueing onto the record works rather abruptly but well enough as long as you guide the lever down gently and don’t just pull it over all the way. However, the operation in the other direction, lifting the stylus from the record, is also very direct and feels under-damped. Unless you move the lever very gently and avoid moving it all the way to the end stop, you can easily make the arm bounce up, which makes the anti-skating pull it back a little bit in mid-air before it stabilizes on the lift pad. This makes precise queuing more challenging, especially when repeatedly using the lift to find a specific section on the record.

But ultimately, this is predominantly a matter of comfort, which is reflected in the player’s price tags. With the cost factor in mind, the more important matter is how they compare sonically. Which brings us, finally, to the listening sessions!

Review Context

The three Grand Class turntables will be listened to and compared to one another in the main system using the Manunta EVO Phono 3 and M2Tech Nash phono stages. However, in preparing for the review, given my earlier experience with the classic SL-1200MkII and SL-1210MkII, I wondered if they would sound warmer and more relaxed or still lean toward the cool and analytical side. To account for either possibility, I asked A Tube High Fidelity for a range of cartridges with different stylus shapes and sonic characters, and they were happy to provide the following models:

Audio Technica AT-OC9XML MC (599 euro)

Audio Technica AT-33PTG/II MC (599 euro)

Audio Technica AT-VM740ML MM (339 euro)

Audio Technica AT-VM750SH MM (439 euro)

From my inventory, the following cartridges were also involved:

Nagaoka MP-150 (379 euro)

Denon DL-103R (429 euro)

The AT-OC9XML MicroLinear (aka MicroRidge) MC is an old favorite. Sadly, it died prematurely due to a moment of inattention. It’s worth mentioning what happened to me in hopes that it may prevent someone else from encountering a similar mishap.

While comparing two phono stages, I had the record still spinning with the stylus in the lead-out groove, and the power amplifier was muted. As I swapped the cables between the two phono stages, the stylus unexpectedly jumped out of the lead-out groove and onto the label portion of the record. I could not see it initially, but the damage had been done. After queuing the stylus, it quickly skated to the center of the record. Upon inspection, it became clear that the diamond tip had been shaved off entirely. Later, I discovered the cause of this issue: I had mistakenly connected the phono cables to the phono stage’s output instead of the input, creating an oscillation loop that made the stylus jump. Such is life, and this is undoubtedly one mistake I will not be making again! In any case, A Tube was happy to supply a new sample for the review, which I treated extra carefully!

The AT-33PTG/II MC cartridge is new to me. It has a very precise MicroLinear stylus, but it is said to sound smoother and warmer than the AT-33SA or the AT-OC9XML, both of which I used with the Thorens TD-1601 turntable. I’m a sucker for articulation and precision, but if the new Technics players performed in line with my expectations, the AT33PTG/III cartridge might potentially harmonize very well.

The AT-VM740ML (MicroLinear) and AT-750SH (Shibata) are two variants from Audio Technica’s best MM cartridge series. This review marks the first time I will hear them, although I have earlier experience with the former’s predecessor, the ATN-150MLX.

I have a special preference for MicroLinear/MicroRidge types for their super-articulate and precise bass, but I should note that these stylus types can, under certain circumstances, also verge on the clean and dry side. That’s why I also asked for a Shibata variant, which is, to put it very simply, a Special Fine Line with an elongated back end. This is an oversimplification; please see the Stylus Shapes article for all the details on the subject.

Under equal circumstances, the Shibata stylus is usually smoother and richer-sounding than a MicroRidge or MicroLinear stylus, making it an interesting variant to try in this context.

Finally, having these MM cartridges also creates a perfect opportunity to see how much of a performance gap there is between them and their MC counterparts.

Setting the baseline

Before diving into the main listening comparisons, I wanted to prepare myself and set a baseline using the classic Technics SL-1210MkII. As mentioned in the foreword, I have always found this player to be a two-edged sword. On the one hand, it has an immediate, upfront, and exciting sound, but on the other hand, I find it lacks body, tonal saturation, and soul. While rhythmically surefooted, I always found it ultimately sounding gray, restless, and somewhat shouty. And, sure enough, hearing it again and comparing it to either of the two Thorens TD-1601 turntables, it performed in line with my earlier experiences. I still like it for its particular strengths, but its weaknesses prevent me from wanting to own one. Now that I was fully primed, it was finally time to listen to the new players. I was excited to learn just how much they had improved. But first, I had to investigate the cartridges and find the ideal marriage for each turntable model.

Listening Part 1 – Cartridge Comparisons

The Nagaoka MP-150 worked superbly well with the AVID HIFI TA-3 arm, which is an OEM Rega RB-330, in combination with three different AVID HIFI turntables. However, with the two aforementioned Thorens turntables, the cartridge performed underwhelmingly. The cartridge worked a lot better with the Technics players, but both Audio Technica MM cartridges outperformed it in the areas of resolution, refinement, articulation, and overall precision. That is, in part, to be expected, given that we’re comparing an Elliptical stylus to a MicroLinear and a Shibata. However, it was still interesting to note, given that the Nagaoka and Audio Technica cartridges are similarly priced. Of course, there’s always the uncertain matter of achieving a happy synergy with a turntable, tonearm, headshell, and cartridge, meaning this remains a relative matter.

Every time I use the Denon DL-103 or DL-103R, I find that it has a unique charm. Its basic conical stylus can inherently not resolve fine detail and elicits sibilance on the s’es. Nevertheless, it always sounds nicely full-bodied, tonally richly saturated, smooth, and pleasingly musical. This cartridge harmonizes with the classic and new Grand Class Technics players as well as it does with the Denon DP-3000NE. Ultimately, though, the DL-103, even the R version, lacks the resolving power to elicit the best from the Technics players.

To my surprise, the AT-33PTG/II sounded far more romantic and relaxed than I had anticipated. Moreover, the (measurably visible) dip in the midrange made it sound less transparent and explicit than I liked. As a result, I did not feel this cartridge worked well with any of the Technics turntables. Unless you are looking for a particularly mellow and inoffensive sound, I recommend using one of the alternatives that achieve a livelier and more neutral balance.

Next up was another surprise because the AT-VM740ML and AT-VM750SH instantly formed hugely successful marriages with all three turntable models. As expected, the ML was relatively leaner and more articulate, and the SH was relatively smoother and more liquid. Unlike the AT-33SA I used before and ultimately found to sound a little too mellow, the AT-VM750SH was smoother than its MicroLinear counterpart but still infectiously upbeat, crisp, and expressive.

Given that the AT-33PTG/II has a similar characteristic mellow sound as the AT-33SA, and I recall the AT-33EV that I used before it also sounding similar, it seems evident that this “romantic” aspect is an intended quality for the entire AT33 range. In contrast, the OC9X range possesses a crisper and more direct sound signature.

Speaking of which, the AT-OC9XML MC cartridge was not in stock and would be delivered two weeks later. So, for the time being, I settled on using the AT-VM750SH Shibata MM cartridge to form my initial baseline conclusions while using the AT-VM740ML MicroLinear counterpart as an alternative.

Next: Listening Part 2

Listening Part 2 – the Turntables

SL-1200GR2

With huge anticipation, I started with the SL-1200GR2. Still, it already illustrates the effectiveness of the countermeasures Technics has taken to eradicate Direct-Drive motors from their traditional downsides, such as restlessness and lack of flow. Sure enough, the SL-1200GR2 has shed a good portion of the classic player’s “hifi” nature and has become more mature and massively more musical.

Compared to the two Thorens players, there are differences in character, and that’s only logical. At first glance, the GR2 could be said to sound more neutral than the more full-bodied and more deeply saturated Thorens players. On balance, however, compared to a wide range of turntables, I would say that the GR2 moves beyond the strictly neutral middle and verges to the lean and tonally pastel side.

Tonality and body are personal aspects, and the balance of these also ties in with personal taste and the rest of the audio system. However, much to my surprise, the new Technics player effortlessly illustrates a similar level of liquidity and flow as the Thorens players. I find it quite telling that even the baby Grand Glass exhibits certain qualities that, so far, were more typical for belt-drive turntables.

It should not be brushed over that Direct-Drive also has its unique perks, such as its excellent bass control and -precision and impeccable pitch stability. In these fields, even the baby Grand Class player outperforms the best belt-drive alternatives. Thanks to the new techniques implemented in the new player, these advantages are no longer accompanied by the typical downsides that have plagued the Direct Drive system for so long.

The net result is a turntable that eclipses the performance of the classic SL-1200 series, providing a detailed, refined, and engaging musical performance at an attainable price point. If it weren’t for the other two turntables to be reviewed, I would already have been impressed with the improvements.

SL-1200GR2 and SL-1300G side by side

Having mentioned the Denon DL-103R cartridge and the Denon DP-3000NE Direct-Drive turntable, it is fair to expect a comparison between the two turntables. With this player (as well as the SL-1200G), the motor magnets are fixed to a sub-platter assembly, and because of this, the platter itself has to be screwed in position. As I found, it is crucial to have the three screws in place. Sure enough, the platter rotates just fine without them, but the sound is not the same as with the screws in place. Precisely as one might expect, given the analogy, the number of screws used and the torque are directly proportional to the perceived tightness and control of the sound. Contrary to my advice for the arm height lock (see Sidenotes), I would recommend against experimenting with the tension of these three screws and just screwing them in hand-tight.

After hearing the SL-1200GR2, I thought the rest of the range would sound more or less similar and predominantly just enhanced in certain areas. The SL-1300G is where this alternative cartridge came into play.

The Shibata variant worked superbly well with the SL-1200MkII and SL-1200GR2, providing an outstanding balance between precision and smoothness. With the SL-1300G, however, I found that my preference shifted. The Shibata cartridge could still be ideal when looking for the most liquid and most satisfyingly smooth musicality. However, I found that the AT-VM740ML provided similar refinement and a bit more bite and bounce to lend more spriteliness to the sound. Meanwhile, the player’s full-bodied nature successfully counteracted the cartridge’s slight tendency to sound lean or dry.

With either cartridge, however, I have to hand it to the player for having a similar level of tonal saturation, calmness, relaxation, and flow as the Thorens players, something I sure did not expect going into this review. We’re talking Direct-Drive versus Belt-Drive, after all.

Although again diminished, a difference in house sound and particular strong suits remains. Between the TD1601 with either TP-92 or TP-160 tonearm and the SL-1300G, the latter provides the most stable, incisive, and robust bass, along with an overall level of confidence and solidity that is hard to obtain with a belt-drive turntable. On the other hand, the TD1601, especially when outfitted with the TP-160 tonearm, has a lusher and more delicate quality and a certain emotion-eliciting quality that is hard to define. In terms of resolution, delicacy, and precision, however, it is very, very close.

Relative differences aside, it is essential to highlight that while the classic SL-1200MkII can be criticized for not sounding lyrical or lacking soul, the SL-1300G confidently wipes these arguments off the table. Clearly, the situation is not as straightforward as it once seemed.

Next: Listening continued, AT-OC9XML cartridge, and Conclusion

SL-1200G

After having been surprised twice, would the last player have another surprise in store? I’d still not consider the SL-1200G a romantic turntable, but the AT-OC9XML MC takes it more in that direction.

With this in mind, I imagine that an AT-OC9XSL could very well provide an ideal balance between precision and crispness on the one hand and bloom and smoothness on the other. The most significant difference that remains is predominantly in timbre. The Thorens players have a more wooden, arguably more natural tonality, whereas the SL-1200G has a more neutral and arguably more linear tonality. The second most obvious difference is in the projection of the soundstage. Where the Thorens is structurally a little more laidback while projecting some of the sounds more forward, the Technics has an overall more urgent feel and projects the entire image more forward. The last difference is in the bass, where the Thorens is lusher and fuller, and the Technics is more propulsive, faster-paced, tighter, and more accurate.

While I found it easy to pick my favorite of the three Technics players, I find deciding between the SL-1200G and the Thorens TD-1601 much more challenging. Ultimately, my preference depends on the music genre and the mood I am in. Smooth soul and vocal music, in general, can certainly still be a little more magical with the Thorens. With fast-paced music and electric drums, in particular, the Technics is more impressive.

Conclusion

Let there be no misunderstanding: these three Grand Class turntables live up to their names. These are not just cosmetic updates, and the techniques used to eradicate the Direct-Drive motors from their long-standing downsides are most definitely not mere tech talk to elude audiophiles.

Even the most affordable Grand Class SL-1200GR2 turntable amazed me with the massive leap in performance from the classic SL-1210MKII I know so well. It retains the classic model’s foot-tappingly enthusiastic, linear, and neutral delivery, but its presentation is more highly resolving and very significantly more delicate and fluid. The result is a precise and revealing yet musical turntable.

The SL-1300G’s remarkably full-bodied and full-blooded nature eradicates any preconceived notions of how the classic SL-1200 series used to sound. It sounds a little dark and quite relaxed compared to the SL-1200GR2, but also so much fuller, smoother, and tonally richer, more musical. Timbres are riper, more natural, and more realistic, and the player even manages to unveil yet another layer of resolution. With its full-bodied bass and overall smoothness, any trace of leanness has vanished; instead, the player sounds more like a heavyweight mass-loaded esoteric specimen.

The SL-1200G has a similarly fluid, open, and delicately airy delivery as the SL-1200GR2, but, like the SL-1300G, the SL-1200G is much more mature and incomparably more convincingly realistic in its portrayal of timbre, texture, and dynamic contrasts. The SL-1200G may be tonally differently balanced and could be considered arguably less romantic than the SL-1300G, but they both perform on a very high level. What the SL-1200G manages best of the three models, however, is to minimize its sound signature. It is amazingly neutral and linear, reminding me in many ways of some of the best turntables I heard at more than twice the price.

A big thank you to Frank, Stanly, and Marcel from A Tube High Fidelity for supplying not just three turntables but four different cartridges as well to make this extensive review possible.

<img loading="lazy"
