Audionet presented their new “almost affordable” pre- and power amplifiers, which were demonstrated using a pair of Vivid Audio Giya G1 series 2.<\/p>\n

Based on HEISENBERG and STERN, Audionet has shrunk the battleships to fast cruiser format, maintaining the iconic design by legendary Hartmut Esslinger of Apple fame. The new pre amp is called MACH, named after eminent Austro-german physicist Ernst Mach for its fast sound. The designers at Audionet feel the power amplifier is both there and not there at the same time, hence it is named: SCHR\u00d6DINGER. Of Schr\u00f6dinger\u2019s cat fame, among other reasons. Named after Erwin Schr\u00f6dinger of the same nationality.<\/p>\n

The music playing when I visited did not strike a particular chord in me, but of course, that does not say anything about the components’ capabilities. Having heard the Heisenbergs, I am biased to expect quite a bit from these newcomers.<\/p>\n

Grimm Audio celebrated its 20th anniversary and showcased the MU1 and MU2 servers using LS\/1C (for carbon) active loudspeakers and Crystal Cable Minissimo speakers, respectively. The MU2 was connected directly to a Halcro Eclipse Stereo power amp, driving the Minissimos and its own subwoofer via a simple 150Hz passive crossover.<\/p>\n

The “C” affix for the LS\/1s stands for Carbon, as the Beryllium tweeters have been substituted by new Carbon designs. The “digital” setup with LS\/1s sounded very much as it always does: confident, robust, neutral, and excitingly expressive.<\/p>\n
A Wilking<\/a> Delta turntable made from 5 layers of birch plywood with a Benz cartridge was used as an extra source for the MU2 and to showcase their new PW1 Phono Stage. I was unaware of the turntable brand until now, which is a shame since it is apparently a Dutch company!<\/p>\n Size-wise, the Halcro amp may seem like overkill for the petite Minissimos, but sonically, it was a match made in heaven. As impressively linear and expressive as the LS\/1s are, I found the “analog” system more engulfing and more emotionally involving.<\/p>\n The MU2 looks exactly like the MU1 but can be discerned by its silver disc (versus the gold disc on the MU1)<\/p>\n Grimm PW1 (after designer Peter van Willenswaard) MM\/MC Phono stage. With a projected price of 5.000 euros, it will be available later this year and will likely be featured in an upcoming review here on HFA.<\/p>\n Separate MM and MC inputs, and RCA as well as XLR outputs.<\/p>\n A sliding panel on the bottom reveals a multitude of DIP switches to make the required settings<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The new Magico S5 was presented in the same room as last year (Atrium 4.1, Room F-115), in a similar setting, with what seemed like the same acoustic treatments. This is great as it provides a consistent basis to reach relatively safe conclusions. The only obvious difference was the absence of the two Magico subwoofers.<\/p>\n Three Artesania Exoteryc racks were filled with an Antipodes Oladra server, Wadax Atlantis Reference DAC, Pilium preamp, and Telos earthing system, and in front, a huge Pilium power amplifier.<\/p>\n In many ways, the S5 sounded like a bigger S3, especially in terms of treble delicacy, midrange sweetness, uniformity, lack of edge, and overall naturalness. On the other hand, the S5 sounded less tight and nimble than I recall the S3 being last year. The S5 bass is fuller in body, which also makes for a more voluminous lower midrange that seems a little darker and warmer than that of the S3.<\/p>\n With a quoted bass extension down to 20Hz (in-room), the S5 could easily fill the room with deep and robust bass. I did notice some mild room mode behavior, which was not there last time with the S3s when two subwoofers were also part of the demo. This does not say anything negative about the S5s but illustrates the benefits of well-implemented subwoofers as part of a precisely calibrated system. They are not just for extending bass; they can actually help linearize the bass response.<\/p>\n Pilium is a brand that is used by many exhibitors with widely varying systems. Even though I have heard the brand many times in various settings, I have yet to put my finger on any recognizable sonic fingerprint. And that is a very good thing!<\/p>\n Magico S3, driven by Audio Research KT-170-equipped Reference 330 mono power amplifiers, with the brand new and visually stunning Wadax “Studio Player” CD player and streamer. Retail price for this new beauty is expected to be 42.990 euros in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n It’s not yet set in stone, but I may do an in-depth review of the Studio Player here on HFA.<\/p>\n This system sounded absolutely gorgeous. It was sweet, rich, fluid, and spacious yet linear and transparent, as well as tight, articulate, fast, and well-controlled. Visually, too, I found this to be a beautiful and simple but obviously very high-performance system.<\/p>\n This time, the Magico S3 is powered by a full MSB front end, including the new MSB Cascade DAC, with an Oladra server as a source (used with Roon and Squeeze).<\/p>\n The sound was supremely delicate, transparent, refined, and surprisingly fast and explosive, if not quite as engulfing or organic as the other S3 system. Visually, another beautifully simple yet deceivingly esoteric system.<\/p>\n Frank Vermeylen of Very Fine Solutions provided interesting backstories for the music he played. For one of the pieces, he forewarned the audience that some listeners fell out of their chairs due to the sudden dynamic impact. I figured that would probably have been an overstatement… Boy, was I wrong! I think I even shrieked when I literally jumped my chair…<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I have formed preconceptions in my head, but I must confess I still don’t have an actual grasp of how Soulnote equipment sounds. In any case, in this context with YG speakers, the sound was very much “typical” YG: fast, articulate, precise, clean, linear, and ultra-transparent. Despite the name of the equipment driving them, some may feel the presentation lacks a little soul. Personally, I appreciate this kind of precision, but I know it is not for everyone.<\/p>\n The Wilson Benesch room featured the new GMT System Turntable with two new tonearms: Graviton Ti and Graviton Ai that feature additively manufactured titanium and aluminum counterbalances and carbon fiber composite arm tubes. The other source was the brand-new Taiko Audio Olympus music server, with Ypsilon SET100 Ultimate and Aelius II SE power amplifiers.<\/p>\n The speakers were the Omnium loudspeaker, built up in a stunning Phantom Belladonna finish, especially for this show, accompanied by the brand-new IGx Push-Pull Infrasonic Generator.<\/p>\n Designed to complement the system perfectly, I saw the IGx’s membrane move, but its contribution was absolutely inaudible. That is, it introduced no side effects whatsoever. The sound was robust, upbeat, and communicative, with astounding dynamic impact. Driven by Ypsilon pre\/power amplifiers with the brand-new Taiko Audio Olympus music server, timbre and transient behavior felt very realistic, even if the treble could sometimes be a little hard. Maybe the speakers needed a little more playing time.<\/p>\n Alas, I have not heard the turntable, but it sure looked hugely impressive.<\/p>\n It’s become a theme since my first visit to Munich: every time I hear Stenheim speakers, I am impressed. Seemingly perhaps a little “inobtrusive”, they are always superbly coherent and natural.<\/p>\n As in so many rooms, this room also introduced a mode or two, but that is not the speakers’ fault. Some boom here and there aside, the sound was neutral, richly saturated, spacious, organic, liquid, engaging, and seductive. This system made it very easy to sit back and enjoy the music.<\/p>\n The main YG room looked and sounded massively impressive. The tall and curved YG XV 3 Signature speakers with separate woofer towers and “SUV-sized” 3000-series Boulder amplifiers may look menacing, but I love their brutally sculpted presence. This was a full Boulder system fronted by a Technics turntable and Aurender N30sa music server. The sound is best described as audiophile precision and neutrality combined with PA-power and presence. That is not to say the system sounded blunt or rough in any way; quite the contrary. YG speakers can sometimes sound a little dry, but the sound of this big system was actually much more organic and richly saturated than the systems I heard with smaller YG speaker models. The only potential downside I could discover is that the tweeter is positioned very high. This was also evident in the sonic picture, as if one was at a concert looking up at a performance on a large stage. But maybe that is precisely the purpose!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lansche Audio<\/a> presented two tall but beautifully sleek No.8.3 tower speakers fitted with Plasma tweeters! You know, the Singing Flame of old? But here, they are implemented almost invisibly inside a small horn.<\/p>\n The plasma tweeter used here is a proprietary development available only from Lansche Audio The CORONA plasma tweeter forms the centerpiece of their loudspeaker systems. This system contains no inductive voice coil, no inhomogeneous magnetic field, no resonance-bound membrane, no mass-spring system vibrating back and forth, and no non-linear suspension. All there is, in fact, is light and air.<\/p>\n The manufacturer describes the tweeter’s performance as follows:<\/p>\n The fascination of the CORONA plasma tweeter lies in the hard-to-describe lightness of treble reproduction, linked with absolutely insane precision and speed, without having to accept even a hint of hardness. The absence of any system-generated resonance in the transferred frequency range of 1.5kHz \u2013 150kHz is remarkable!<\/em><\/p>\n I wholeheartedly agree. This system’s treble performance was, for lack of a better word, perfect. But the quality was not just in the treble and upper midrange, by the way. The lower midrange and bass were also utterly neutral, and the entire seemingly complex system simply sang with a unified voice. Rarely have I heard such coherence and linearity from such a large system comprised of different techniques.<\/p>\n The Thrax and Analog Domain components surely also contributed to this system’s superb sound.<\/p>\n The scale of the Aries Cerat system with the 850.000 euro Pandora speaker system really does not come across in photos; you had to be there to truly understand the massive scale of the round mid-bass horns, let alone the more than man-size bass horns.<\/p>\n The system featured the brand-new Taiko Audio Olympus music server and countless Aries Cerat electronics, most strikingly, the 280.000 euro Aries Cerat Pandora Turntable with Zephyrus Phono Stage.<\/p>\n The sound of this system was big, dynamic, and impactful, yet lush, delicate, and airy. The resolution was excellent, and the timbre was very natural. I found that focus and coherence depended heavily on the listening position, which may lead to varying visitor comments. In any case, this is certainly a system for an extra large budget and a very large listening room to allow enough distance to the listening position.<\/p>\n Backed by an Aurender N30sa server, dCS DAC, Pilium preamp, and MSB power amplifiers, this beautifully elegant system sounded warm, lush, airy, and delicate, as well as fast, articulate, and precise in equal measure.<\/p>\n The curvy shapes may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I find them visually stunning.<\/p>\n Soulution showcased several new products, including the new 717 power amplifier. Although it offers the same 150W\/300W\/600W power figures as the 711, it is a completely new design.<\/p>\n While I was in this room, the exhibitor played two consecutive piano solo pieces. As such, I did not get a complete feel of the system, but from what I heard, it sounded articulate and percussive but also fluid, well-textured, tonally rich, and timbrally realistic. Based on the piano pieces, I can’t tell a whole lot, but it seemed like the Gauder speakers made a very natural match with the Soulution system.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The new Marten Coltrane Quintets were complemented by Jorma cables and electronics from esteemed partners such as Antipodes (Oladra), DS Audio, Halcro (Equinox preamp and Eclipse Monos), MSB, and TechDas.<\/p>\n For this year’s demo, the exhibitors created a room within a room to showcase the superlative electronics (among which the brand-new Halcro Equinox preamp) and, of course, the brand-new Marten Coltrane Quintet. The room looked visually attractive, but more importantly, the performance clearly benefitted from it: this was the best sound I have heard from a Marten room in Munich!<\/p>\n As can be seen in the images above and below, the polished carbon fiber is now visible, and I absolutely dig it. These must be the most beautiful speakers in existence.<\/p>\n One of the standout features of the new Coltrane Quintet is the new custom convex carbon fiber mid-bass driver. Combined with a custom pure diamond tweeter, a custom pure beryllium high-midrange, two aluminum sandwich bass units, and the signature first-order crossover, the new model promises new levels of clarity and realism, according to the manufacturer.<\/p>\n Since I first heard them, the Coltranes have been my favorite Marten speakers. Based on what I heard at this show, the new Coltrane Quintet improved on the Coltrane 3 in several areas. First, I fully agree with the marketing text: these new speakers do indeed provide heightened levels of clarity and realism.<\/p>\n Marten speakers have always excelled in fluidity and organic flow, and the new Coltrane Quintet is no different. But on top of this, there is a level of expression I’d not heard from Marten speakers before. Actually, this was foreshadowed by the introduction of the Mingus Septet last year in Munich. It’s probably no coincidence that the new Coltrane contains the same full beryllium upper midrange that is used on the new Coltrane Quintet. Still, the Coltrane manages to perform on another level altogether. Cleaner, faster, more coherent.<\/p>\n The Marten room also featured the new Artesania Absolute Rack Steel, shown on the left and right in pre-show photos above and below. It has to be said: Artesania builds some of the\u00a0most gorgeous hifi-furniture!<\/p>\n The room may well be a contributing factor, and we sure cannot ignore the Halcro amplification and the other great electronics. Still, this year, I heard a level of precision, speed, resolution, and transparency that I had not experienced in a Marten room before. The upper midrange was maybe a bit prominent, but that may be a matter of the speakers requiring more running. But even so, I prefer a little extra bite and excitement over a midrange that is too reticent and lacking vitality.<\/p>\n Above: TechDAS turntable with DS Audio cartridge and Equalizer for analog and MSB Cascade DAC for digital. Below: the brand-new Halcro Equinox preamplifier. During the show, the Equinox and the MSB DAC took turns feeding the Halcro power amplifiers.<\/p>\n This concludes the Munich High End highlights.<\/p>\n Now, it’s time for the highlights from the HifiDeluxe show in the Marriott Hotel.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Grandinote surprised with their Solo amp with a Volta streamer DAC built in. Its front panel is almost entirely covered by a massive screen with a custom-designed graphic interface. There’s a bit of Sci-Fi in here, mixed with a more traditional steam-train vibe.<\/p>\n I absolutely love it when brands dare to be individual!<\/p>\n The system with Grandinote Mach2 Estrema loudspeakers played in a massively punchy, impactful, expressive, and dynamic manner. Toe-tapping and rock’n roll to the max.<\/p>\n Above is the first production sample of a new breed of Clarisys speakers: Piccolo, which is built in a modular manner and contains double-sided bass panels.<\/p>\n Above, you can see the\u00a0two extremes of the portfolio: Auditorium and Piccolo, right before shipping off to Munich.<\/p>\n Here’s Daan Vreeswijk of PUUR Hifidelity<\/a>, demonstrating the Piccolos on a photo provided to me after the show. Unfortunately, when I arrived on Sunday, the Minuet NEOs were set up to play instead of the Piccolos, so I sadly missed the Piccolo demo. But if all goes as planned, I will do an in-depth review of these new beauties very soon!<\/p>\n I did hear the Minuet NEO.\u00a0Finished in piano black with bronze metal parts, the speakers look stunning.<\/p>\n This room looked cozy and inviting but was sonically difficult. Still, the Minuet NEOs showed huge potential. It reminded me of the standard Minuet I reviewed last year<\/a> but with improved control, expression, and absolutely explosive power. The transient behavior is off the charts, and not just for a dipole speaker!<\/p>\n Think full-range ribbon speakers cannot produce bass? Think again! Even the small Minuet has tight, articulate, deep, tuneful, full-bodied, and full-force bass.<\/p>\n The gents did like to play really loudly, which drove me out of the room prematurely, but my hearing is admittedly quite sensitive, and this was certainly not the only room that played too loudly to be comfortable for me.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Prior to hearing the speakers in this room, RA Acoustics<\/a> was unknown to me. And to be honest, based on their appearance, I probably would not have given them a second look. But after hearing them, I am reminded again of not judging a book by its cover!<\/p>\n If there’s one aspect that this room emphasized, it is that the room matters. A LOT! As one of the very few rooms at the show, I could detect zero room modes, and there were no other room issues at all, either. Just a blissful, linear, fast, hugely transparent, immediate, and incredibly expressive sound. The Soulution system with two 701 mono power amps may seem “overkill” but the combination clearly worked its magic, culminating in a performance that reminded me a bit of the Lansche Audio speakers. The treble performance was, of course, very different between the two, as the RA speakers did not have the Lansche’s plasma tweeter’s superb delicacy and lack of added character, but otherwise, the balance was similar. These are one heck of a nimble, fast, and expressive pair of speakers deserving closer inspection.<\/p>\n Ubiq Audio Lab had one of the largest rooms of the show and with the Wilson Chronosonic XVX, a large speaker system to match. The cabling was top-tier Transparent Audio.<\/p>\n The sound of this system was “Wilson-typical”: robust, full-bodied yet tonally natural, impactful and lively, and very dynamic, if not as spacious as I am usually accustomed from Wilsons in general. But of course, that is predominantly a product of (placement in the) room, and show conditions are very hard to control.<\/p>\n The air conditioning in this room was working well, leading to a pleasantly cool room ambiance, but also leading to the system sounding a little cooler than I think it would have in a warmer room. Nevertheless, when seated in the front row, the system sounded well-controlled and very evenly balanced. I don’t think I’ve heard Wilsons sound this linear before, which probably says something about the room and setup, but also a lot about the electronics driving them.<\/p>\n The Finite rack contained an Aurender (I believe W20) with external Aurender clock, a Burmester power filter, dCS DAC, the gorgeous HSE Audio Phono Preamp Masterline 7, and a Ubiq Audio Lab Ubiquitous 300B preamp. On top was the Dohmann turntable.<\/p>\n As the name suggests, the Ubiq Audio Lab Ubiquitous 300B preamp contains two 300B tubes, beautifully built in.<\/p>\n In fact, all Ubiq Audio Lab components are built in a stunningly beautiful manner. The amplifier below is the left channel without a top, I believe this is the Ubiquitous Mono.<\/p>\n Below is what I believe is the Ubiquitous Mono Extreme.<\/p>\n Off to the side was what I automatically assumed to be a subwoofer. On closer inspection, I found that it turned out to be a power amplifier called Ubicube.<\/p>\n The website only shows the mono model, but this is the stereo version. It has an unusual shape for an amplifier, but I have to say I am a massive sucker for symmetry, love industrial design, and am a big fan of square shapes in general. It’s always good to see when manufacturers dare to be different, and I was impressed with this little amplifier’s build quality.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Mal Valve system contained many components, and it was unclear which were connected. Of course, the most eye-catching elements of the room were the MalStat Four electrostatic + magnetostatic loudspeakers.<\/p>\n Featuring planar drivers in a coaxial dipole midrange high-frequency chassis, a polished flat-surface push-pull dynamic woofer, and external crossovers in tubular enclosures, the speakers produced a beautifully open, nimble, airy, neutral, linear, and expressive sound.<\/p>\n These strange-looking Kronos speakers, driven by a Nadac front end and Naiu Laboratories Ella MkIII power amplifiers, produced a sound that was ultra-nimble and fast, clean, expressive, maybe a little dry at times, but in many ways, also startlingly realistic. With their visually emphasized treble\/midrange arrangement, one might expect an overly bright sound but what I heard was anything but. Don’t let the visual aspects distract from a system that deserves closer inspection.<\/p>\n The Thorens Reference turntable looked mightily impressive but surprisingly understated and subtle, given its massive size and heft.<\/p>\n Mounted are an active Reed tonearm and a Thorens tonearm.<\/p>\n Besides this all-out assault, Thorens also showcased turntables such as the TD 1601, TD 1500, and TD 403 DD, as well as products in other categories and across all price ranges.<\/p>\n These are the Thorens SoundWall HP 600 full-range dipole loudspeakers. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and could not hear this system, nor any of the other systems in the ground-floor halls.<\/p>\n The Knife-Edge-Bearing Thorens TP 160 tonearm, recently reviewed with a TD1600 turntable<\/a>, was already available as an upgrade for existing TD 1600 and TD 1601 owners but is now also available as an OEM version fit for mounting on other turntable brands.<\/p>\n Thorens also showcased the new “PhonoConnect” analog cable range.<\/p>\n Above: the Silver Line, using pure silver conductors; below: the Copper Line, using pure copper conductors.<\/p>\n And that concludes the HFA Munich highlights for this year!<\/p>\n HIGH END SOCIETY Service GmbH Contact:<\/p>\n Claudia Kazner Dieter Mallach Phone: 0201 408084![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.hifi-advice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Munich_2024_IMG_5930_550pix.jpg\")
