Not too long ago, network switches were seen as unimportant “passive” distributors, and the mere notion of a high-end version was often ridiculed. Now, we know better. Twelve years ago, I found out through empirical testing<\/a> that even standard 60-euro network switches have an unexpectedly large influence on the sound when inserted between the router, 15 meters of ethernet cable, and a streaming endpoint. Moreover, when daisy-chaining 2 or 3 of the same switches, the effect increased the more I added. Later, I found that different brands still can and do sound different, even in the entry-level price class. Perhaps more importantly, I found that the power supply has a very large impact even with these simple switches. The reality is that, in audio, everything matters.<\/p>\n

I won’t claim to know all the reasons why a network switch influences the sound, but one important aspect is that it is not the format or signal itself but rather the environment in which it is distributed that makes the difference. After all, the signal is digital and asynchronous, so it is not time-correlated and even has error correction. Even if a package fails to transmit correctly, it will simply be retransmitted. The music plays from a buffer; unless the stream is interrupted long enough to drain the buffer, the music should keep playing. Skeptical readers will also note that Ethernet connections are galvanically isolated, and while that is true, a galvanic connection only prevents DC from flowing which is helpful to help avoid ground loops. It does not stop modulations, otherwise, the all-important data signal would not get through either. Another aspect that should not be underestimated is cross-contamination, for instance, a power supply or device impacting other parts of the audio system besides the component to which they power or feed a signal. There’s much more to say on the subject, but rather than theorizing, I’d rather just insert a component into the system and listen to the result.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The subjects of this review<\/h3>\n

Ohm Audio sent me two different Ansuz Power Switches (X-TC3 and D3) complete with two different Ansuz ethernet cables (X2 and D2), and to top it off, an Ansuz Linkz D-TC Supreme DC cable. Below, I will explain the technologies that are in these products and how they compare to one another.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

PowerSwitch Technology<\/h3>\n

All PowerSwitches from Ansuz Acoustics are equipped with multiple noise-suppressing and music signal-amplifying techniques. Noise is suppressed using proprietary Tesla Coil technology they refer to as “double inverted coil”. These Tesla Coils are a highly effective technology based on a simple principle. A Tesla Coil consists of 2 coils, a coil and a counter coil. When the coil detects a noise spike, the counter coil creates an out-of-phase noise spike, which cancels out the initial noise spike. Think of it as a noise-canceling headphone, which does exactly the same thing; only a noise-canceling headphone does this electronically, whereas the Ansuz Tesla Coils do this in a mechanical way. The more Tesla Coils are used in the signal path, the better the noise is eliminated.<\/p>\n

The most effective incarnation of Tesla coils are the Active Tesla Coil variant, which, when implemented around cables and as Square coils on opposing sides of the printed circuit board, actively protect the signal from absorbing airborne RF noise. The active version is about three to four times more efficient than the Passive cable Tesla coil. The Switches reviewed here contain the latest Active zirconium Tesla coil technology. For this, Ansuz has implemented a zirconium bar in their anti-aerial resonance coil design.<\/p>\n

The main difference between the PowerSwitch models is in the types and total quantity of Tesla Coils used, with the most expensive PowerSwitch from Ansuz, the D-TC GOLD Signature, containing the largest quantity and most types of Tesla Coils for the most optimal noise reduction and sound quality.<\/p>\n

PowerBox Functionality<\/h3>\n

All Ansuz PowerSwitches are equipped with built-in PowerBox functionality to connect Ansuz D2 series cables and higher. The inline cable box that is part of the Ansuz D2 series cables and higher contains Active Tesla Coils, which work under voltage, and are up to 4 times as effective as the Passive Tesla Coils and provide a lower noise floor and less ground potential between equipment. However, these Active Tesla Coils must first be energized, which is why they require a PowerBox, which can be acquired separately. With the PowerSwitches, however, this funtionality is built in. To use this, simply connect the supplied 3.5mm jack-to-jack cable between the PowerSwitch and the inline block of the cable. Interestingly, these jack-to-jack cables are a link that can also be upgraded. For this, Ansuz offers two TC Linkz cables, the D-TC Supreme and the TC Linkz GOLD Signature, of which I will assess the former as part of this review.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ansuz PowerSwitch X-TC3 and PowerSwitch D3<\/h3>\n

The PowerSwitch X-TC3 is Ansuz’s latest entry-level Network Switch product. The next model up is the PowerSwitch A3, and above it is the PowerSwitch D3 which is a reference model PowerSwitch with only the ultra-reference PowerSwitches (D-TC Supreme and GOLD Signature) positioned above it.<\/p>\n

Both PowerSwitches use the latest techniques. For example, Ansuz Acoustics has used the brand-new Active Zirconium Tesla Coils, and the Analog Dither Technology is of the latest (3rd) generation. Combined with several other techniques, all these techniques aim to reduce noise in the music signal and amplify the music signal.<\/p>\n

The Ansuz PowerSwitch X-TC3 has 12 Active Square Tesla Coils, 3 Active Zirconium Tesla Coils, and Analog Dither Circuitry Gen.3.<\/p>\n

The Ansuz PowerSwitch D3 has no fewer than 90 Active Square Tesla Coils, 3 Active Zirconium Tesla Coils, 2 Active Cable Tesla Coils, and 2 Analog Dither Circuitry Gen.3. As an extra compared to the Ansuz PowerSwitch A3, the PowerSwitch D3 is also equipped with Ansuz’s very effective ‘Anti Aerial Resonance Coil’ technology. Thanks to this, the PowerSwitch D3 has much more extensive noise suppression than the PowerSwitch A3 and X-TC3.<\/p>\n

Both PowerSwitches have a high-quality and stable internal power supply, so you do not have the additional expense of purchasing a high quality linear external power supply.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Both PowerSwitches have the following connections: 8 x LAN Port, 10 x PowerBox Outputs for compatible Ansuz cables (D2 and higher).<\/p>\n

TC Linkz D-TC Supreme and TC Linkz GOLD Signature<\/h3>\n

The Ansuz TC Linkz cables are developed to preserve the refined signal created in the Ansuz PowerBox to feed the more advanced series of Ansuz cables, which are prepared for active operation. This is done using the same core materials as the Ansuz cable series. The Ansuz TC Linkz D-TC Supreme cable features three shielded silver-plated copper conductors. The Ansuz TC Linkz D-TC Gold Signature cable features three shielded Gold- and silver-plated copper conductors.<\/p>\n

As part of this review, I will listen to the D-TC Supreme.<\/p>\n

Ethernet Cables<\/h3>\n

Ansuz has a wide range of Ethernet Cable models in their portfolio, of which I will be reviewing two models. Central design considerations are to lower resistance, curb induction, and reduce noise floor to a minimum. The more advanced the cable series, the more refined and sophisticated the implemented technologies are.<\/p>\n

The Digitalz X2 is the starting point using silver-plated copper conductors and a passive End Tesla Coil. The Digitalz D2 is positioned two levels up and occupies the mid-tier. It uses two passive End Tesla Coils and adds Active Cable Tesla Coils, which an Ansuz PowerBox or an Ansuz PowerSwitch can power.<\/p>\n

Next: Review Context and First Listening<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Running In<\/h3>\n

I was advised to grant the Switches plenty of running in, and thanks to my currently extra-busy schedule, the units have been sipping power for many weeks.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

An important thing to note is that one should not judge the influence of an Ansuz Switch just by re-routing the RJ45 connections. Even when the Switch’s outputs are not connected, the Tesla Coils will provide feedback via the mains power, which benefits the other components in the system, skewing the listening impressions compared to actively using the Switch. Thus, the only way to compare the influence of these switches is to disconnect them from the power when not in use.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Review Context<\/h3>\n

The PowerSwitches will be listened to in the main system<\/a> using Roon on various Music Servers, including the Antipodes Oladra G4<\/a> and Grimm MU1<\/a>. The rest of the system comprises the CH Precision C1.2<\/a> DAC, CH Precision L1<\/a> preamplifier, CH Precision A1.5<\/a> power amp, and Magico S1 MkII speakers.<\/p>\n

All digital sources are supported by HRS EXR Racks<\/a> while the CH pre-amplifier and DAC are supported by an Artesania Exoteryc<\/a> rack with Carbon Fiber Linear Arms<\/a>. The CH power amplifier is supported by an Artesania Aire<\/a> rack with Carbon Fiber Linear Arms<\/a> and KSH2 Krion shelves<\/a>. The PowerSwitches, finally, will be reviewed on an Aire rack, with and without Ansuz Darkz<\/a> Resonance Control footers.<\/p>\n

Listening<\/h3>\n

After listening to a range of selected tracks on the system with my usual el-cheapo Cisco switch, I connected the Ansuz PowerSwitch X-TC3 to power using a standard Belden power cable and standard Cat.6 ethernet cables.<\/p>\n

For this first acquaintance with the X-TC3, I placed it directly on the Artesania KSH2 Krion shelf of the Aire platform. I’m using a basic setup at this stage, so I’ve not yet added Darkz Resonance Control footers because I want to see what the switch brings to the table all by itself.<\/p>\n

X-TC3 PowerSwitch<\/h3>\n

Even without giving it time to settle, the X-TC3 makes an immediate and very clear difference. The soundstage becomes considerably wider with more separation while the images within it remain clear, crisp, and fully focused. This has the effect of increasing the apparent resolution, most notably from the midrange up and especially in the treble, which is now airier, more agile, and more fluid.<\/p>\n

Some high-end switches I had previously heard acted like smooth-makers, providing an alluring easy-going sweetness at the expense of rounding off transients and adding thickness and warmth in the process. While I won’t say this cannot be helpful in certain situations, once you start considering a network switch costing several thousands, chances are that the audio system is already well-balanced, and you will want that balance to remain intact. Fortunately, the Ansuz X-TC3 is very neutral. Dynamically, it poses no restrictions and in terms of tonality and timbre, it incurs no changes. In this sense, the switch is very transparent, and its contribution is entirely beneficial. However, the switch does change the bass behavior, which may divide opinion. Interestingly, I heard this effect as soon as I connected the Switch to power, without any other connections, and still listening to my own switch. What happens is that the bass becomes fuller but slightly rounded and less incisive. The feeling is of a more relaxed performance, not slower, but less tight and urgent. Other than this, I noted no changes in this scenario. All in all, you can say that the X-TC3 has a gently luxurious touch to it, making the system sound smoother, airier, more charming, and more fluid while painting a grande, more fascinating soundstage.<\/p>\n

So far, I’ve only used the X-TC3 with standard ethernet, standard power cables, and no footers. These can have a very large influence, so naturally, I will further explore this. But first, I want to see how the X-TC3 compares to the D3 under the same basic circumstances.<\/p>\n

D3 PowerSwitch<\/h3>\n

Moving up from the X-TC3 to the D3 under identical circumstances, so, still with basic power cables and ethernet cables, to be honest, I was not ready for what I was about to hear. Not only does the D3 make the bass tighter and more articulate than with the X-TC3, but the entire performance is now considerably more energetic. The X-TC3 was not slow, and the D3 is not faster, but it does feel more incisive and propulsive and behaves more impulsively. Undoubtedly, that’s a tangible result of its more extensive noise suppression. Meanwhile, the resolution is sky-high but without hardness or edge. Perhaps there’s still just a hint of luxuriousness compared to a standard switch (or you may feel a standard switch is very lean and matter-of-fact), but I would not say the D3 verges toward being relaxed or voluptuous. What also surprised me was that the soundstage appeared higher! It’s as if my speakers have suddenly become 30cm (1 foot) taller. Now, I must confess to rarely hearing very large differences in terms of soundstage height, so for this to happen now, it must be substantial.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ansuz Darkz Resonance Control Footers<\/h3>\n

Like other Ansuz products, the PowerSwitch footers are fitted with round slots to create ideal circumstances for adding Darkz Resonance Control devices. From earlier experiences, I know Darkz have a large and hugely beneficial effect on any component placed on them, and I have no reason to think a Switch would be any different. And indeed, I quickly found it is not. I normally use Darkz without balls, but for Ansuz equipment, they come highly recommended. For this review, Ohm Audio sent me a set of Tungsten balls. At ~100 euros per set of 4, they are not cheap but much better than the Titanium versions, and even with the X-TC3, they are well worth it.<\/p>\n

Maxing out the X-TC3 PowerSwitch<\/h3>\n

As much as I was excited about the D3 switch and wanted to continue discovering the extent of adding Ansuz Darkz, ethernet cables, and TC Linkz, let’s first step back to the X-TC3 to see how much extra performance can be extracted from it.<\/p>\n

Adding Darkz C2T<\/h3>\n

Oh, yes, this is a no-brainer addition! At 1.120 euros for four, the C2T’s provide a (for Ansuz) cost-effective yet very clear benefit with cleaner and tighter bass and more resolution and expression overall.<\/p>\n

Darkz S2T<\/h3>\n

The S2T Darkz are double the price of the C2T, but their additional benefit is unmistakable with a decidedly more robust bass, more realistic timbre, and an overall remarkably solid and weighty sound. These footers are highly recommended, especially if your system leans toward the lean side.<\/p>\n

Within the Darkz range, there are three more tiers above, with, as I know from repeated experience, ever-increasing performance. However, while, for instance, the T2 Darkz will be even better, their pricing exceeds that of the X-TC3 PowerSwitch itself. In that case, I think the budget might better be allocated to better cables, which is what we will investigate now!<\/p>\n

Ansuz Ethernet Cables<\/h3>\n

Now, it was time to further up the game by swapping my OEM Cat.6 cables for the Ansuz Digitalz X2 ethernet cable. To keep it fair, I removed the Darkz again to assess precisely what the cables could do for the sound all by themselves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Swapping to the Digitalz X2 from the OEM Cat.6 cable again makes a very noticeable difference. The cable adds a considerable amount of weight and substance to the bass and tonally fills out the midrange with more body and saturation. Despite the richer and slightly less incisive presentation, the resolution does not decrease, rather, the treble becomes more fluid and refined. At 640 euros, it is an easy recommendation if you are looking for a big, ballsy, and luxurious sound.<\/p>\n

Leaving the Digitalz X2 and adding the Darkz C2T footers back in, the combination costs 4.155 euros. Not pocket change, but still relatively good value if you consider that the D3 PowerSwitch costs 5.795 euros with no extras.<\/p>\n

A last recommendation I can make is for the power cable. I found that the GigaWatt LC-2 EVO<\/a> worked better than the Belden at increasing the precision and level of detail while tightening the bass. The LC-2 does have a rather controlled sound, which is not for everyone. The best alternative in its price class would be the GigaWatt PowerSync ULTRA<\/a>, which further enhances the X-TC3 in its most notable inherent characteristics, such as wide sound staging, ballsiness, and flow while adding a subtle organic touch without straying from neutrality. While there is no denying that the power cables also do much, I must emphasize that the Switch itself has a larger effect. So, for maximum sound quality and no budget restraints, by all means, go and get a great power cable and add T2 Darkz while you’re at it. But for the best bang for the buck, the money for power cables is likely better spent elsewhere… for instance, by procuring some more funds and stepping up to the D3.<\/p>\n

Next: Maxing out the D3 PowerSwitch and Conclusion<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Maxing out the D3 PowerSwitch<\/h3>\n

Coming from the X-TC3 optimized with C2T footers and Digitalz X2 ethernet cable and swapping to the D3 with no optimizations whatsoever, so, straight on the Krion shelf and with standard Cat.6 cables, fair is fair, there’s not as much saturation or charm as with the maxed-out X-TC3. But, importantly, the D3 instantly performs on a higher tier in terms of cleanness, articulation, precision, and transparency. And remember, that’s with all standard cables and no Darkz!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Adding Darkz C2T<\/h3>\n

Just as with the X-TC3, adding C2T Darkz is a no-brainer, resulting in tighter, more explicit bass and more resolution and expression overall. Truly, you owe it to the D3 switch to add at least a set of C2T.<\/p>\n

Darkz S2T<\/h3>\n

As with the X-TC3, the S2T Darkz footers add more robust bass, a more realistic timbre, and an overall very solid and weighty sound. While this can be ideal for certain setups, for 640 euros extra, I would recommend stepping up one more level to the T2 to get the best from the D3 Switch.<\/p>\n

Darkz T2<\/h3>\n

Although I also have and use the T2S model above, the T2 has proven, in many cases, to be my favorite model. At 3.200 euros, it is not hugely more expensive than the S2T, yet, its performance is entirely on a different level. In short, the T2 has a very even-handed quality to it, enhancing the precision and transparency uniformly across all parameters. It’s not as full-bodied as the S2T but rather more neutral, which I think should be preferable in high-tier systems.<\/p>\n

Darkz T2S<\/h3>\n

The Darkz T2S is very special indeed. Yes, at 4.800 euros for a set of 4, it demands serious money. But what it does borders on magical. It takes the T2 performance and transforms it into a wider soundscape with what I can only describe as a fully-enveloping surround effect. For all its magic, the T2S does sound a little less incisive and expressive, which is why I often prefer the T2. But this is hugely dependent on the system, so if the budget stretches, make sure to test both the T2 and T2S.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Digitalz X2<\/h3>\n

Swapping to the Digitalz X2 from the OEM Cat.6 cable brings back the richness, weight, and substance I noted earlier with the X-TC3, but now accompanied by a higher overall level of precision, resolution, linearity, and transparency. The combination sounds energetic and lively, royal, and emotionally engaging all at the same time. Even without Darkz, the D3 Switch performs on a higher level than the X-TC3, just as it should. At 640 euros, the X2 cable would be a no-brainer if not for the D2 cable’s existence.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Digitalz D2<\/h3>\n

The D2 cable has a nice trick up its sleeve, almost literally, in the shape of Active Tesla Coils. This is where the added “Power” functionality of the PowerSwitches comes in. The Digitalz D2 comes with a simple jack-to-jack cable to get you started, which I used first.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Where the X2 ethernet cable has a profound influence on the sound compared to a basic ethernet cable, the difference between D2 and X2 is relatively subtle but, at the same time, profound. What the X2 does is not so much change the bass, overall character, or soundstage size, but it fleshes out 3D images, making them appear more freely in the room.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ansuz TC Linkz D-TC Supreme<\/h3>\n

At this point, I did not think there was much left to gain by using different DC cables. But, clearly, I was mistaken! Swapping the standard jack-to-jack DC cables for the C Linkz D-TC Supreme made my jaw drop to the floor as the soundstage further opened up to allow the vocalist even more space and become even more focused and free-standing as well as portraying a mesmerizing sense of depth. At the same time, the whole presentation took on a free-floating quality that had nothing to do with speaker position or room dimensions.\u00a0This was beyond expectation and beyond reasonable, to be honest. This just should not be possible. Yet, it is very clearly so.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It’s as if the performers are suddenly freed from the previously unnoticed constraints of a stereo system. Going back to the standard jack-jack cable made the music appear almost dull by comparison, as if I took several steps back and was listening to a standard Cat.6 cable again. Truly, such is the effect of the TC Linkz D-TC Supreme.<\/p>\n

Compatibility<\/h3>\n

The Ansuz PowerSwitches and cables perform their magic equally effectively with all servers I tried them with, meaning they are universally applicable. That said, to some extent, the inherent sonic character of a server will dictate the result. For instance, a lean and clean-sounding server like the Grimm MU1 benefits arguably more than a smooth and fulsome-sounding server like the Antipodes Oladra.<\/p>\n

In general, my experience has been that Ansuz products start amazingly effective from the entry-level products and then become more linear and precise as you move up to higher-tier models. As it follows, relatively affordable servers and streamers usually benefit more from lower-tier Ansuz products, while more exotic equipment “demands” higher-tier Ansuz products. It’s only logical but interesting to find that this prejudice really works in practice.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

When using a product that purifies the signal, one might assume ending up with a dry, strident, matter-of-fact sound, but this has never been the case with any of the Ansuz products I have tried so far. In fact, the opposite is the case with the X-TC3 PowerSwitch. The sound becomes more spacious, enveloping, dreamier, delicate, and fluid. The overall balance offered by the X-TC3 leans slightly toward luxurious and voluptuous, and while it offers excellent focus and apparent resolution, it trades some bass control and crispness for smoothness, but I bet many will be pleased with this, especially when emotional involvement is paramount.<\/p>\n

The D3 PowerSwitch offers all the advantages of the X-TC3 but further ups the game by sounding cleaner, more incisive, more impactful, and more transparent while sounding more upbeat and energetic. While the D3 is technically more advanced, and this is reflected in its higher inherent linearity and precision, it is still very much an emotion-inducing machine offering superb refinement and flow in an involving organic rendition with loads of charm.<\/p>\n

Both PowerSwiches are hugely effective, but Digitalz Ethernet- and TC Linkz DC cable also deserve special mention. Especially the effect of the D2 cable’s active Tesla Coils, and the flabbergastingly royal difference between the standard jack-jack cable and the TC Linkz D-TC Supreme DC cable has to be heard to be believed.<\/p>\n
