Naturally, I will provide my listening impressions, but first, I must provide more in-depth information about each component. They are all just too special!<\/p>\n

Wadax Atlantis Reference Server<\/h3>\n
The Reference Server is driven by a heavily regulated, multi-stage power supply derived directly from the supplies developed for the Reference DAC. The Server contains 3 large proprietary power transformers, 5 stages of power supply regulation, and over 200 discrete parts. It is optimized for the rejection of external conducted and radiated emissions while also extracting and eliminating the naturally generated electromagnetic noise inside the chassis. Mechanically, it is decoupled from critical circuitry to avoid any possible cross-contamination into the critical digital circuitry.<\/p>\n

The chassis is machined from 150 kg of high-spec aluminum alloy and made into a complex and ultra-rigid construction that doesn\u2019t just isolate vulnerable data from the outside world, it isolates the individual sections within the server itself, mechanically and electrically grounding each critical section, preventing the transfer of mechanical or radiated energy from one to another. The entire structure and its parts are classified and assembled according to their mechanical and vibratory behavior to create a sophisticated mechanical cascade designed specifically to transport and dissipate structural energy.<\/p>\n
Rather than off-the-shelf components, Wadax built their own USB physical layer driver to ensure accurate data transfer. The server even provides adjustable mechanical support for the cable, which prevents heavy high-end cables from leaning too heavily on the connector.<\/p>\n

Atlantis Reference Server rear – note the massive size of the AKASA connector and the adjustable mechanical USB <\/em>support<\/em><\/p>\n The server provides a unique solution to the issues inherent in data encoding, transfer, and cable connections \u2013 Digital Waveform Control. The Wadax digital components employ a proprietary MusIC Chip 2 technology, a feed-forward error correction system that compensates for time, amplitude, and phase errors in the D-to-A conversion path. Using the same technique \u2013 adding the inverse of the transfer function error to the signal \u2013 Wadax realized that it would be possible to compensate for the bit waveform distortion in the USB interlink.<\/p>\n This is achieved using Digital Waveform Control, a set of three rotary knobs that allow users to adjust\/compensate for errors in the rise-time and amplitude of the sent signal as well as the spacing on the return channel (counteracting echoes and reflections). Users can establish 3 pre-set compensations to match the replay characteristics of different streaming services or locally stored files.<\/p>\n Having developed the DWC feed-forward correction, Wadax set out to further advance the interface technology, developing their own proprietary optical connection to optimize the transfer of the musical files. Working with a leading Japanese optical engineering corporation to create the fiber optics and Neutrik for the connectors, Wadax designed and built the AKASA optical interface.<\/p>\n AKASA is a proprietary solution that requires the installation of dedicated driver and receiver boards in the Reference Server and Reference DAC. AKASA further raises the performance bar, according to the manufacturer, eclipsing all existing digital standards and challenging the musical performance of all available audio sources.<\/p>\n Next: Wadax Atlantis Reference DAC<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Everything about the\u00a0Atlantis REFERENCE DAC<\/span> is unique: the clock circuitry; PSU topology and distributed regulation; the implementation of the musIC feed-forward error correction technology; the totally independent, dual-Mono DAC and analog circuitry; the fully modular construction, allowing for future upgrades or updates of key circuit blocks; the physical separation and independent housing of left and right channels, left and right channel power supplies; the mechanical vibration management incorporated in the chassis construction \u2013 and that barely scratches the surface of a product that contains 23 printed circuit boards, 10 independent, purpose-wound power transformers, and over 5,500 discrete parts.<\/p>\n With the Atlantis Reference DAC, Wadax created a sculptural, fully modular, and upgradeable concept comprised of 3 elements that connect visually as a whole.<\/p>\n All parts are milled from solid blocks, 5 different and specific alloys are used, and more than 320Kg of alloy is the starting point for the production of the chassis. The whole assembly of the chassis is done by a single highly skilled artisan and involves over 100 hours.<\/p>\n Wadax have realized that conventional digital decoding struggles to achieve its theoretical performance: components and circuits never behave ideally, generating a complex, polluting mix of non-linearities that contaminates the delicate audio signals during and AFTER conversion. To further complicate things, these non-linearities and error mechanisms are load-dependent, varying with signal amplitude. Together, they form the core of what we have all come to recognize as \u201cdigital sound.\u201d<\/p>\n Wadax technology is founded on the unique musIC process, a sophisticated feed-forward error correction system that operates in the time domain. By mapping the error mechanisms of a chosen DAC chip under load using Adaptive Delta Hilbert Mapping, the company can develop an algorithm that examines the incoming signal and calculates the induced error (both linear and non-linear) that will result. By applying an inverse signal at the input, we can, in real-time, correct for the time and phase error that is so musically destructive in conventional decoding systems.<\/p>\n This process requires massive mathematical operations and a considerable data transfer of 12,8 GBytes\/s. Processing is done at a 128-bit internal resolution to render the output and generate the smallest feed-forward corrections precisely. According to the manufacturer, the result is measurably and audibly the most natural and musically communicative digital decoding possible.<\/p>\n The Reference DAC utilizes a cost-no-object power supply topology, a physically and electrically independent, dual-mono design, employing 10 custom-wound transformers for total isolation of each critical section in the circuit, six stages of cascaded regulation on the AC input, and over 30 local regulation stages.<\/p>\n The DAC employs total physical isolation of left and right channels and further physical separation of the mechanically noisy power-supply components from the delicate signal processing circuits. Massive, mechanically grounded chassis components are designed to sink vibrational energy and interface with sophisticated, modern equipment support solutions.<\/p>\n Strikingly, the Reference DAC\u2019s three chassis elements can visually be arranged in a linear layout (as seen in the Reference Sounds setup) or vertically arranged, with the chassis design combining harmoniously in either situation.<\/p>\n Next: Dan D’Agostino Momentum HD and MxV S250 and Wilson Audio Sasha V<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Momentum S250 MxV stereo amplifier features techniques and topologies initially developed and implemented in the Relentless Mono Amplifier and delivers the sound quality of the Momentum M400 MxV monoblock in a more affordable stereo design. The circuit topology and construction of the stereo ampli\ufb01er mirror those of the monoblock, using the same ultra-efficient copper heat sinks with venturi cooling, the same 1% metal-film resistors, the same 69 MHz output transistors, and the same fully complementary balanced configuration.<\/p>\n The amplifier has a handful of improvements over the previous model, among which are a new transformer that provides higher current and greater dynamic headroom, a revised input stage with a new topology leading to wider bandwidth, and reduced distortion. Furthermore, the output stage has additional power transistors and utilizes a nearly 50% increase in operating bias.<\/p>\n Housed in a separate chassis for maximum isolation, the Momentum HD main power transformer is 33% larger as compared to the original Momentum Preamplifier. A unique winding technology, first employed in the Momentum M400 amplifier, delivers greater power output from the same footprint. Separate supplies power audio and control circuitry, so the control circuits are completely isolated from the audio circuits. Internal circuitry filters RF noise from the AC powerline, compensating for asymmetric power waveforms and DC on the main power line.<\/p>\n Taking advantage of the increased power supply capability, the output stages are now operating at a 36% percent higher voltage. The increased output voltage has opened up the dynamics on both the micro and macro levels.<\/p>\n With its own distinctive identity, Sasha V combines the essence of its famous predecessors while combining some of the most effective elements developed for its larger siblings. The upper module two-position front spike track offers additional adjustment positions the previous model Sasha DAW<\/a> didn’t have, resulting in more precise time alignment accuracy and more adaptability to a wider variety of listening positions.<\/p>\n Sasha V has strategically nested V-Material in the critical interface between the upper module and the top of the woofer cabinet. Novel in its properties, this material provides uncommon vibration control and upper module isolation, similar to the design philosophy found in the prestigious Alexx V and Alexia V.<\/p>\n An all-new copper version of the AudioCapX-WA capacitor has been recently developed, raising the bar for high-frequency micro detail, and makes its debut in the Sasha V. The AudioCapX-WA capacitors, along with fine-tuning the Sasha V’s crossover topology, have contributed to a new standard of low-level resolution in a playback system.<\/p>\n Wilson Audio now also make their own capacitors!<\/em><\/p>\n Next: Listening Impressions<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Even though we did not do an A-B comparison, it was immediately evident that this system was in a very different class compared to the Wilson Audio Sasha DAW system heard during in 2019. The previous system relied on the Mark Levinson No.519 player\/streamer as a source, and while this is a great player in its own right, there is very clearly no comparison with the Wadax components, either price-wise or performance-wise. But while it’s tempting to point the finger at the Levinson, that does not tell the whole story. In 2021, I heard the higher-tier Wilson Audio Alexx V with the rather more upscale Rossini SACD player, DAC, and Rossini Master Clock in the very same room, but even though the Sasha V are strictly speaking lower-tier loudspeakers, I have to say the current system sounded even better in some ways!<\/p>\n The system managed an utterly seamless combination of transparency, control, tonal saturation, rich texturing, 3D soundstaging, and overall breadth. Surely, the Wadax combo has a very large stake in this, providing hitherto unavailable information. But I should also think if the speakers were not up to the task, they would not relay this quite so effortlessly.<\/p>\n As a fan of Titanium, Diamond, and Berrylium tweeters, I will admit to keep thinking relatively lowly of the “normal” fabric dome tweeters that Wilson uses these days, but honestly, based on what I heard during this demo, I truly cannot fault these drivers, whether they use exotic materials or not. They sound fast, open, and precise, as well as extended, dynamic, and very realistic.<\/p>\n Having heard my fair share of Wilson Audio loudspeakers, not only across demos at shows but actually in the same Reference Sounds listening room, I feel quite confident in separating the new speakers’ benefits from those injected by the Wadax Dream Team. While I can’t be 100% sure without hearing the new V and the older DAW side by side, most notably, I have a strong feeling that the new model has further evolved in terms of resolution, openness, and transparency. Especially the upper midrange and the treble had the cleanest behavior I have heard yet from any Wilson speaker, and that includes the Alexia V and Alexx V!<\/p>\n Perhaps the new D’Agostino Momentum MxV S250 also has something to do with the perceived increase in transparency and resolution, although I would expect more or less the opposite from a design that has a bigger transformer, more transistors, and higher current delivery. In other words, I would expect a more relaxed sound. Now, I must add that the sound was, in fact, relaxed but never slow. From an earlier demo, I recall feeling that the D’Agostino had a hint of Jeff Rowland DNA. By that, I am referring to the Rowland-typical smooth lushness at the cost of a bit of crispness and incisiveness. That earlier experience was admittedly with the Progression amplifier. But if this sonic signature is still in the current products, I did not hear it. The music could certainly be smooth, but never more so than was in the recording. And that is precisely how I think it should be.<\/p>\n It’s predominantly in the bass where the Sasha V is distinguished from the higher-tier models like the Alexia V and Alexx V. As one may assume, the Sasha V has prodigious bass with lots of power and slam, and the speakers have no reserves in terms of dynamics or impact. But with its immaculate midrange and treble behavior, I can’t help but notice that its bass does not achieve the level of articulation, speed, and precision of which the Alexia and Alexx are capable. Of course, that’s only to be expected and fair, given the large discrepancy in cost, the different drivers, and the sheer size of the Sasha’s larger brethren.<\/p>\n As for the Wadax combo’s sonic attribution, I am quite certain that they are responsible for the rare combination of utter precision, resolution, and control with a total absence of an electronic signature of any kind. I hear no synthesis, no coloration, just pure, clean music.<\/p>\n There is a lot of control yet no feeling of listening to an overdamped sound.
