Originally, I had intended to limit this review just to a listening impression of the new 801 D4 Signature. However, during my visit to Bowers & Wilkins in Eindhoven, I was provided with such a wealth of information that I felt I could not merely focus on the review and keep all the extra info to myself. <\/em>As a result, what you can read below is a bit of Company History, a Factory Tour, and of course, a Listening Impression of the 801 D4 Signature.<\/em><\/p>\n

A little over 3 months ago, I received an invitation to a multi-pronged press event. The list included a Denon\/Bowers & Wilkins Home Cinema demo, a Custom Installation audio\/video demo, a general Product Portfolio lineup introduction, and, particularly relevant to this review, a not-further-described sneak peek of a new product.<\/p>\n

Honestly, I did not think much about it until I received a phone call from Channel Marketeer Nico Bierhoff. He suggested that, given my prior interest in the 801 D4, he would urge me to come to the presentation. As all was still under wraps, he could not tell me much, only that the Sneak Peek would be of a very substantial product and that he was sure I would find it interesting. Well, that certainly whetted the appetite!<\/p>\n

The invitation was accepted and as time passed, I speculated what would be the new product. In retrospect, it makes perfect sense but I never would have guessed it. As the event came closer, I was informed that we would not be allowed to take photos and that an NDA would have to be signed before being allowed in the room to see the sneak peek. I quickly checked the small print to see if I wasn’t handing over my soul or the rights to all future reviews but all was clear and simple, and of course, after a lot of joking, all the available press signed the same form in eager anticipation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Bowers & Wilkins main hall contains a very nice display of classic Denon, Marantz, and Class\u00e9 gear.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The 9.4.4 Home Cinema demo was quite impressive and it was amazing how the Denon AVR-A1H, AKA “The Beast”, drove all those Bowers & Wilkins 700 s3 series speakers at very high levels with superb solidity and perfect clarity. At times, I picked up that the sound was a little too bright or aggressive for some and it was suggested that a Marantz Home Cinema counterpart would be more ideal for these people. For me, it was just a bit too loud but otherwise, I was very happy with the neutrality and transparency. So I guess, when it comes to surround sound, I am more of a Denon person than a Marantz person.<\/p>\n

The CI demo, while of course not at the same level as the big system, was still impressive as the sound was not just decent but actually really great and certainly far better than anyone could reasonably expect from a flat built-in system.<\/p>\n

Next was a Product Portfolio update for Marantz and Denon and it was interesting to see how the brands make use of common electronic components where desirable or economical, and where they clearly differ, in order to maintain their two respective “House Sounds”. Interestingly, all models were opened up to cater to our journalistic inspection and the gentlemen were more than happy to answer all our questions.<\/p>\n

One important question that came up is how Denon and Marantz implement their individual character. As it turns out, the two companies have their own sound-shaping engineers who are responsible for the tuning, not unlike what Ken Ishiwata did for Marantz. The areas in which the sound is shaped are predominantly the DAC and output stages. Certainly, in the higher class components, the two brands shared virtually no similarities.<\/p>\n

Naturally, the best was saved for last. As we were led into the main audio room, we were greeted by highly knowledgeable and super-friendly Senior Sound Engineer Rainer Finck. He explained that we were about to hear the Signature version of the 801 D4 that was set up in place of the “regular” D4, now in a gorgeous blue so deep that it appeared as black in the dimly lit room. It wasn’t until Rainer mentioned the Midnight Blue Metallic color and used his phone’s flashlight to demonstrate this that we noticed. Unlike in some of the official photos, the color is very subtle in real life, more black than blue, and rather reactive to flash photography and ambient lighting. Classy, absolutely very classy.<\/p>\n

For this Sneak Peek, there was not yet any official technical information but Rainer did provide a few highlights and mentioned that he had for quite some time been involved with a team of Engineers in the UK while they were working on optimizing and refining the 801 D4. During this time, many facets of the speaker had been overhauled, including substantial physical changes right down to subtle but labor-intensive adjustments such as tweaking the crossover by ear using bypass capacitors.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fast-forward to the recent present, when Nico was again in touch, now to arrange a private demo for myself and Werner Ero in which the 801 D4 was directly compared to the 801 D4 Signature. This time, there was an abundance of technical info and the gentlemen even prepared two nice PowerPoint presentations which were both rather animatingly presented by Ronald Dijkstra, Premium Brand Activator, and great storyteller. Below, I will share a few highlights from these presentations.<\/p>\n

Just a few highlights from the company’s 57-year-long history: DM5, Signature 30, DM7, DM6 (nick-named “Kangaroo”), a model that I am not familiar with, and just a slice of what looks like an 802 Matrix model. <\/em><\/p>\n

For Bowers & Wilkins, the goal has always been to reduce distortion. To that end, many different techniques have been tried, even the combination of a traditional dynamic woofer with an electrostatic panel in the shape of the DM70 (see below).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Below is another beautiful oddity from Bowers & Wilkins’ past: the Emphasis. I’ve heard this model play in combination with Sphinx electronics and I still recall how rich and sweet these speakers sounded.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Above are multiple batches of low-frequency drivers, ready to be fitted to loudspeakers. To aid production-line efficiency, the chassis for the Signature model is black, rather than raw metal: this helps identify the superior specification of the unit to the team on the Final Product assembly line.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Shown above are the interlaced thin layers of plywood that are at the very basis of all the curved cabinets.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What I never knew before seeing this presentation is that the layers of plywood are stacked alternately with a solid and dry sheet of what looks like a piece of paper but which is in fact dry glue. Only when applying heat and pressure does the glue liquify and all the layers will be bonded.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Above is the result of the pressing procedure. The edges still look rough and uneven but they’re oversized on purpose so that any excess material can later be machined away.<\/p>\n

Above is a row of tweeters, ready for use. Ronald mentioned that the tweeter surfaces are not this nice after the initial production steps. What we see as the nice clean “diamond-like” surface is actually an extra applied layer. Without this layer, the tweeters would look gray and dull.<\/em><\/p>\n

The model has been available since 1993 and the two guys work around the clock to deliver all Nautili that are ordered. If you want one, please prepare to spend some time waiting for it to be finished.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Heritage of Signature<\/h3>\n

Bowers & Wilkins use the Signature name sparingly, reserving it only for the most exclusive, significantly upgraded versions of its mainstream loudspeakers and technologies. That is why, since the brand was founded in 1966, only seven loudspeaker series have been allowed to carry the prestigious Signature designation.<\/p>\n

Every Signature model has had its own unique identity and at the same time, every model has been connected to its predecessor by several common threads: no-holds-barred performance, unique, distinctive beauty, and special-edition exclusivity.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Launched in 1991, it all began with the original Silver Signature (shown below) marking two momentous occasions in the history of Bowers & Wilkins. First, it celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 1966 foundation of the company. Second, it was released as a posthumous tribute to the founder, John Bowers, who passed away in 1987.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Silver Signature was a fully optimized and no-expense-spared loudspeaker based on established Bowers & Wilkins thinking. This speaker concept did not introduce new technologies but instead, it made the very most of existing components and processes. A great deal of attention was paid to crossover design, signal pathway, and cabinet finish. Retail price was not the key deciding factor. Upon its release, the Silver Signature (shown above) was similar in size to Matrix 805. However, its extreme, performance-orientated design meant it cost over four times more than an equivalent pair of Matrix 805s! Silver Signature was now established as the ultimate purist choice. It was a showcase, not of where the brand was headed in the future, but of how much knowledge it had amassed thus far.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Speaking of “Silver”, in fact, every major metal component in the Silver Signature apart from its aluminum tweeter dome was actual silver. This includes the large metal protectors over the midrange drive unit and the tweeter, and the terminals. And inside, the speaker also featured a lot of the precious material. It used silver windings on the voice coil, silver foils and windings inside the capacitors, silver cabling to feed its drive units, and still more silver cabling to connect to its crossovers, which were housed in external components for superior isolation from the cabinet.<\/p>\n

Of course, this level of attention to detail had a price, and it was a hefty one: back in 1991, a pair of Silver Signatures cost more than four times as much as those 805 Matrix models that were superficially very similar. But for the few passionate enthusiasts who bought them, it didn\u2019t matter a jot.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Signature 30 (above and below) was an elegant floor-standing version of the Silver Signature\u2019s configuration that arrived five years after its sibling to celebrate the company’s 30th Anniversary.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In 2001, the company introduced two Signature 800 Series models: Signature 805 and Signature 800.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Each of these two models featured the same recipe of greatly upgraded internal components plus bespoke cabinet finishes and, in the case of these two models, Connolly leather trim.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In 2006, the company marked its 40th Anniversary with a rather unique and special model, the Signature Diamond (shown below).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Designed by Sir Kenneth Grange (the man behind the DM6, 801, and Matrix 800), the Signature Diamond was an elegant, compact two-way floorstander with a radically curved cabinet plus a unique, all-marble Tweeter-on-Top housing featuring a diamond dome diaphragm.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And this brings us right up to date with two new 2023 models, the 801 D4 Signature and the 805 D4 Signature. These 800 Series Signature models build on the pioneering foundations of the company’s most advanced range of loudspeakers.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

801 D4 Signature and 805 D4 Signature<\/h3>\n

To clearly illustrate their prestigious position within the Bowers & Wilkins portfolio, both the 801 D4 Signature and 805 D4 Signature are available in two exclusive new finishes: Midnight Blue Metallic paint and California Burl Gloss wood veneer.<\/p>\n

The Midnight Blue Metallic paint is the same as that used on the iconic Nautilus speaker, with a total of eleven coats of paint and varnish that are machine polished. Not counting the curing time, just applying the paint takes more than 18 hours. The Midnight Blue Metallic speakers also have a specially developed blue leather by Connolly finish on the top plate.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, both models are also available with a special California Burl Gloss wood veneer finish, featuring a unique grain pattern and a luxurious high gloss finish, in combination with black leather by Connolly. The wood veneer is sustainably produced technical wood from the Italian specialist ALPI. With no less than fourteen coats of paint and multiple sanding and polishing operations, the total finishing time for one 801 D4 Signature in California Burl Gloss is more than 24 hours.<\/p>\n

The flagship model is the 801 Signature, a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker with identical cabinet dimensions and drive unit sizes as the 801 D4.<\/p>\n

The smaller model in the new range is the 805 Signature, a two-way stand-mount loudspeaker with identical cabinet dimensions and drive unit sizes as the 805 D4. As with the standard 805 D4, the new model can be used with an optional floorstand, the FS-805 D4.<\/p>\n

Please note that the 805 stand-mount speakers were not set up to be listened to. As such, the rest of this review will focus only on the 801 D4 Signature.<\/p>\n

801 D4 Signature – Technical Aspects<\/h3>\n

The new models enhance the already exceptional performance and aesthetic benchmarks of the models on which they are based. Careful component upgrades and luxurious, beautiful new finishes have been added. The new 801 D4 Signature represents the pinnacle of current Bowers & Wilkins thinking and design and can therefore be regarded as the new flagship of Bowers & Wilkins loudspeakers.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The 801 D4 Signature is based on Bowers & Wilkins’ Diamond Dome tweeter and Continuum\u2122 ConeFST\u2122 center driver with the addition of powerful dual 250mm (10″) Aerofoil Cone bass drivers with upgraded and improved magnets for the motor systems.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Signature 801 D4 also features a radically improved aluminum top plate supporting the Turbine Head midrange enclosure. This new design with its new optimized skeletal structure contains machined-out holes, strategically positioned to change the resonant frequency of the aluminum to minimize unwanted resonance. We were allowed to handle a normal top plate and then one for the signature series and indeed, the latter is very noticeably quieter.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The aluminum top plate of the 801 Signature is paired with a new design of leather-trimmed plastic \u2018collar\u2019 that slots into the aluminum top plate. This collar contains strategically positioned wedges of Techsound damping material, as is used elsewhere in the 801 D4 structure, for example, inside the Turbine Head, and in the plinth. This results in even lower mechanical noise and as a result, a less audible cabinet contribution effect.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The 25cm (10in) low-frequency unit has been re-engineered with an upgraded steel specification in the top-plate and mid-plate which lowers inductance and leads to lower current distortion.<\/p>\n

The 801 D4 bass port output is a substantial aperture in the cabinet. In the standard model, the area around this hole is braced with an aluminum baseplate to restore lost stiffness. This follows the same logic as the aluminum plates inserted into the baffle around the drive unit apertures at the front of the cabinet.<\/p>\n

The 801 D4 Signature goes one step further by upgrading the port output itself. In a standard model, the Flowport flare is plastic: in the 801 Signature, it is replaced with cast aluminum to make it stiffer and quieter, and less susceptible to unwanted port noise.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As with previous Signature models, the 801 D4 Signature’s crossover has been carefully upgraded with new and upgraded Bypass Capacitors (identifiable by their yellow finish). These are also doubled up in quantity across the boards.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Finally, the 801 D4 Signature introduces a new tweeter grille mesh design. The new design is more open than ever. The orientation of the structure is specific and engineered to ensure the best results. Reportedly, there were over 25 iterations in the development process before the engineers eventually settled on this new design!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I handled a mesh sample that was available and can confirm that the “holes” are now indeed larger while the structure is still extremely stiff. I would not expect anyone to damage their tweeters even if they tried.<\/p>\n

Exclusive to the Signature series<\/h3>\n

Please note that none of these improvements will be made available for \u2018retrofit\u2019 to current products, nor will they be incorporated as a running change into existing 800 Series Diamond products. This ensures that the Signature series remains unique.<\/p>\n

Next: 801 D4 Signature – Listening<\/p>\n

801 D4 Signature – Listening<\/h3>\n

Unlike the last time that Werner and I were visiting Bowers & Wilkins for the introduction of the original 801 D4<\/a>, this time, we did not bring along any of our audio equipment. We both figured that this was not necessary since this was going to be an introductory listening impression of two models under identical circumstances and not a full review.<\/p>\n

Inside the listening room were both the “regular” 801 D4 and the brand new 801 D4 Signature. First, Ronald would demo one pair, then the other, using a short playlist. After that, Werner and I were allowed to play with the system for a few hours.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Naturally, the two pairs of speakers are merely posing for the picture. When listening, we always had either the one pair or the other in position while the inactive speakers were relocated to the sides.<\/em><\/p>\n

Review Context<\/h3>\n

The Bowers & Wilkins listening room is carefully treated on all the surface areas with a mixture of diffusion and absorption to achieve what Rainer referred to earlier as an accurately measured result as well as a musically pleasing performance. The resultant sound feels neutral and entirely uncolored, there are no reflections and there is absolutely no room boom, however, there is a distinct leanness in the bass and the gentlemen did acknowledge this. Nevertheless, this is something that both speakers will face, and as such, it should not affect the conclusion.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The digital source is a Mac Mini running Roon, connecting via an AudioQuest USB cable either to the Class\u00e9 Delta Pre or the Marantz SA-10 SACD player according to taste. The former sounds more ballsy, concrete, and expressive, while the latter sounds more fluid, relaxed, and refined, and with these two perspectives, the system caters to different ears. The power amplifiers are the Class\u00e9 Delta Mono. Incidentally, while their cooling fans were running at a low RMP, I could only hear them when really up close, not from 2 meters away, and certainly not from the listening position.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Listening<\/h3>\n

Starting with the “regular” 801 D4’s, the sound is solidly planted, robust, precise, linear, transparent, expressive, and very neutral. Just as noted the last time, these speakers absolutely do not have much in common with the older Nautili that I used to own so long ago. More specifically, I actually felt at the time they posed good competition to similarly-priced Magicos. As some of Rondald’s recordings highlighted beautifully, the 801 D4’s can sound full-bodied and tonally deeply saturated, or pure and intimate, but they will not add any character themselves. All the tracks of Ronald’s selection each exhibited their own unique character, whether small-scale or room-filling and large, the speakers never stood in the way of the performance.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With enormous anticipation, the speakers were swapped, and I have to say it was very comfortable for a change having this carried out by two “assistants” while remaining seated myself! Care was taken to position the speakers in the same positions and before we knew it, the system was back up and running.<\/p>\n

With the Signature 801 D4’s in position, Ronald re-started the same playlist. Oh yes, this sure was different! Subtle, perhaps, but the differences were also rather more diverse than one may assume.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For starters, the bass was now tighter, cleaner, and more precise. I didn’t think the “regular” 801 D4 model had any character in the bass, but what character was there before, was now clearly eradicated, leaving only clean, pure sound, conveyed exactly as it is in the recording. Further, there was something special going on with the midrange, highlighted in particular with vocals and strings. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I would refer to it as a mix of magic and realism. On the one hand, vocals could now sound more intimate and convincing, and on the other, they could trade in some earthiness and take on more of an ethereal delivery. Rather intriguingly, with some tracks, I was now noticeably more emotionally involved. With other tracks that had a more rhythmic inclination, there was increased fluidity and reduced edginess, but along with it, also a subtly reduced sense of dynamic attack. With that, I think we are touching on what may be the most profound difference. Whereas the older 801 D3 had been felt by many to be on the hot and hard side, and the 801 D4 had neatly addressed this, the Signature 801 D4 moved further toward a smoother, lusher, and more fluid presentation. But I hasten to add that the Signatures are not just a polished version of the originals.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The regular 801 D4’s treble was already remarkably pure and refined. This Diamond tweeter is truly magnificent and certainly one of the very best tweeters that I have heard. But with the Signature version, the treble range was now even better integrated with the midrange, in other words, the two were more coherent. And while there is now a hint of warmth and increased lushness throughout the midrange and up, the bass remains tight and articulate, and involvingly propulsive. And across the board, the whole presentation is not just more refined, but also more transparent. You still hear everything that is going on in the mix, only in a more friendly manner.<\/p>\n

Even in the face of their higher resolution and transparency, I can absolutely not imagine anyone accusing the Signatures of being clinical. Come to think of it, with the careful tweaking of the crossover and all the other subtle but important improvements aimed at further lowering the distortion, the speakers have taken on a delivery that is, more than ever, reminiscent of\u00a0the refined luxuriousness for which sister brand Marantz brand is famous.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Further listening on our own confirmed all the aforementioned assertments but also brought to light some additional differences. For instance, while the bass was now beautifully crisp and tight, the midrange sometimes had a politeness that allowed for a lessened level of snap and pop with percussive instruments. In checking with Nico, we learned that the Signatures were still quite new and may not have had enough total playing time to really come into their own. With that in mind, it is highly plausible that they will also further loosen up and potentially become more extravert and expressive.<\/p>\n

As mentioned, this was only a “first listening” impression and not an in-depth review. Ideally, I’d subject them to a more extended listening period in the context of my own system to really get to the bottom of their performance. Nico mentioned that it may be possible to arrange this at some point but given that the speakers are, for now, not widely available, that extensive review may not materialize any time soon.<\/p>\n

In any case, based on what I heard, I can confidently state that the Signature version very successfully implements the essence of what Bowers & Wilkins have been aiming for since their inception, which is to achieve ever lower levels of distortion. Oh, and did I mention that these improvements come in what must be one of the most beautiful loudspeakers on the planet?<\/p>\n
