Andre and Vanessa Gil, Company Directors, Audio Resonance Management Designers, and passionate music lovers, created AG Lifter out of a devotion to high-quality audio reproduction. They listen a lot to live music and judge their own product on its musicality with a lot of emphasis on the sound stage and the naturality of tone. The underpinning design philosophy was to build a rack for music lovers.

The original AG Lifter Mk 1 Isolation Foot was the catalyst for understanding the problems present in the Audiophile’s listening environment. At present day, the product is in its Mk 6 incarnation and this Footer alone went through over 40 changes from its conception. Out of knowledge gained from the development of this footer, the racks came into existence and in total, there are now seven AG Lifter Audio Rack models in different finishes.

AG Lifter audio isolation products are designed to be a mechanical diode that manages resonance from entering audio components, both externally but also internally. According to AG Lifter, it is a general misconception that harmful vibrations only enter audio equipment externally from the room. As the company points out, most harmonics are actually generated internally by the audio equipment itself.

AG Lifter Range

The AG Lifter audio rack range was designed to fit in with most contemporary and classic interiors. The Apollo Modular Rack is part of the premium range, followed by the Crescendo Modular Rack range. Both incorporate technologies that deliver their enhanced performance through the use of layers of isolation and coupling/decoupling. In addition, the Apollo Rack has an updated frame, which further optimizes the tunability of the rack. Furthermore, the High-Performance Coating (H.P.C), has been incorporated for the Apollo range of brass isolation components and coupling/decoupling.

The Apollo Isolation System encompasses several layers of Isolation starting from the ground using the Brass HPC (high performance coating) Dulcet 20 (Large) Isolation Feet. Each module is then decoupled utilizing Stainless Steel bearings housed in a billet brass H.P.C. machined cap which is pressed into the vertical extrusion. Each 20-mm thick acrylic shelf is then isolated using the Brass HPC Dulcet 19 (Small) Isolation Feet. The Dulcet 19 H.P.C. Brass Isolation Feet are adjustable in depth by simply unscrewing and re-tightening them by hand. They are also adjustable in width by loosening the Aluminum beams using an Allen key after which they can be freely positioned for fine-tuning. The Brass HPC componentry delivers greater clarity and a lower noise floor. The frame is a custom-designed aluminum extrusion (ISO 9001) with Brass HPC billet caps (instead of aluminum as used for the Crescendo system), that dampen the extrusion. The custom extrusion is designed by AG Lifter and carries a patent covered by the New Zealand Aluminium Supplier.

The pillar profile was designed to have the maximum amount of surface area to quickly release energy. This extrusion is born from extensive research and development testing many different profiles, and a proprietary fastener used to apply tension to the extrusion. After all, one component may sound smooth and warm and another may sound hard or forward. Logic dictates that they will require different supports to obtain ideal system synergy.

Streamer or Server?

Although I note that more and more reviewers and companies are compounding servers and streamers into a single group and are calling them “streamers”, I prefer to refer to products like the Grimm MU1 and the Antipodes K50 or Oladra as Music Servers simply because they are not just Streamers, but also Servers. Technically, they are a server, streamer, and player all in one. A Streamer is a device that can only function as a streaming endpoint. In other words, it does not contain a physical music library component.

With that in mind and in light of the AG Lifter recommendation to use rubber bearings with streamers and steel for all other components, do the MU1, K50, and Oladra require rubber or steel bearings? They could be considered part of group one (since they are “amplifiers”), but they could also be part of the second group since they are neither integrated nor power amplifiers.

To find out, I simply tried both options where applicable using extra sets of bearings.

Extra bearings can always be ordered as needed, for instance, when one changes components or the rack’s composition.

Dulcet Feet Versions

The AG Lifter Dulcet feet work according to the constrained-layer-damping technique, and depending on the Rack model, these are comprised of two layers of either Black Anodized Billet Aluminum or Billet Brass and a single layer of custom-formulated, UV Resistant natural nitrile rubber isolation sandwiched in between. While we can all agree on the importance of sturdy support, not adding coloration, and controlling resonances, it seems impossible for a reviewer to issue an absolute qualification for any platform or rack. With the techniques of coupling, decoupling, damping, and earthing, wide-ranging results can be obtained. Given that all materials and material combinations have their specific sonic properties that can result in a certain character that is added to or sometimes subtracted from the music, the question becomes, what exactly is neutral?

Even that seemingly simple question is hard to answer because it depends on what you are comparing it to. Would we consider the floor to be a neutral starting point? Or do we accept a “mediate” level of coloration from a typical piece of furniture (if we even know what is typical) and set that as the baseline? Ultimately, it’s all relative and honestly quite subjective.

As I use Artesania Exoteryc Racks and both Aire and Organic Line Modular Platforms, naturally, I will compare the AG Lifter Racks and Stands with these so that we obtain a relative assessment. To make for an even more varied landscape against which to judge the AG Lifter qualities, I was able to loan from my friend JW an old favorite, the then-revolutionary but still affordable Finite Elemente Spider Rack, and from my friend NK, a Pagode Master Reference Platform which at the time was the best the brand offered.

Although I depend on the Artesania racks and platforms for most of my reviews, these products are also not entirely free of character and I wonder if that is even possible. Then, of course, one can also ask if that is even the objective. Under ideal circumstances, I would say this is indeed what to strive for. However, there are many factors that can influence this theoretical ideal and make it desirable to deviate from it. For instance, room acoustics, floor construction, system synergy, and personal preferences.

As such, my goal with this review will be to use a range of audio components on top of the AG Lifter products and describe how they affect the sound, in comparison to the aforementioned other racks and platforms so that we obtain a detailed relative assessment.

Listening Round 1 – Apollo Power Amp Stand

Before diving into the entire assembly as a rack, let’s take a closer look at the H-Frame. I’m not sure if this is truly the case but it certainly seems that way. In comparison, the Artesania Aire sounds relatively light-footed. Here, we are touching on the rather fundamental difference between the two platforms, which is that the Aire is indeed airy and ethereal whereas the Apollo is decidedly beefy and grounded.

This theme is further solidified in other sonic aspects where the Aire is ultra-delicate and seems to offer Retina-like resolution but not the ultimate in mid-bass solidity or overall physical presence. Conversely, the Apollo reduces the level of precision and articulation but makes up for this with a seductively rich and voluptuous bass, a sweet, lush, and super-liquid midrange, and a treble that is open but never offensive.

Moving the A1.5 amp to the Finite Elemente Pagode MR (with Cerabase footers) provides yet another, again rather different, sonic perspective. While the Pagode sounded competitive to the Aire + KSH2 Krion shelf when used with a Music Server or CD player, I feel that it does not make for an ideal combination with the CH Amp. I’m not sure why, but somehow, the Pagode lends the amp a particularly thick and meaty property that makes it sound less agile and expressive. While its more wooden timbre compared to the Apollo can be acoustically convincing, prolonged listening makes this aspect stand out as an added quality whereas the Apollo leaves the interpretation more up to the music and the equipment. Granted, the Apollo also has a certain identifiable “character” in the shape of its sweetness and warmth but I feel this is less imposing than the Pagode’s thickness and woodenness. But maybe I’m just used to predominantly “non-sounding” racks. And maybe some listeners feel that the Aire and Apollo are under-representing some aspects of the performance. As always, YMMV.

In any case, so far, these are interesting results for sure! I’ll get to the full Apollo rack shortly but before I do, there’s one more experiment that I must do.

Dulcet Feet Swapping

In order to try and assess how much of the Apollo’s superlative performance stems from the Dulcet 20 H.P.C Brass Feet, I tried both versions under the Crescendo Power Amp Stand. Please note that I left the smaller standard 19 Dulcet feet underneath the Acrylic in place.

As standard, the Crescendo Amp Stand comes supplied with standard (aluminum) Dulcet 20 Feet which yielded the established performance. Now it was time to see what the Dulcet 20 H.P.C Brass Feet would bring. Due to these feet’s much heavier weight, I was expecting the feet to make the sound fuller or fatter but the opposite happened.

As it turns out, the Dulcet 20 H.P.C Brass Feet sound livelier, more open, more grippy, more expressive, and honestly just plain better, without introducing any downsides. Well, if I had to mention something, I could add that the H.P.C. Brass Feet are more revealing of the source quality and thus less forgiving. In other words, they can be perceived as less friendly. But on balance, the Amp Stand remains gently sweet, musical, and still very far from being clinical. So there you have it: these feet are a major contributor!

All in all, though, the Feet swap does not yet make an Apollo out of the Crescendo. For that, we’d also need to swap out the smaller Dulcet 19 Feet as well as the end caps for the H.P.C. Brass counterparts. In any event, the extra expenditure for the Apollo over the Crescendo seems well worth it.

Apollo Modular Audio Rack – Preliminary setup and tests

Now, it was time to build out the complete Apollo rack one level at a time while moving the core components of my system one by one. Starting out on Rubber bearings, I swapped to Steel bearings to find that the sound was now considerably tighter, more articulate, and direct. But I also found this reduced the musicality as a good portion of smoothness and inherent liquidity was reduced. I certainly appreciate tightness and articulation but not when they come at the expense of my enjoyment of the music. So, out went the Steel bearings, and back in came the Rubber bearings. And this worked equally well for the Antipodes Oladra as for the Grimm MU1. So many people, so many preferences. No two systems are alike, and audio components come in many flavors. For instance, I would imagine that the AG Lifter racks will pair ideally with audio components that are not too sonorous or voluptuous. More specifically, I think the rack will pair particularly well with components that sit on the neutral to lean side of the scale. For instance, Andre and Vanessa Gil of AG Lifter use, among others, an Audio Research Ref 5 preamp and Ref 75 amplifier, both of which I know are on the light-footed, transparent, open, and airy side of the sonic spectrum, and I have no doubt that they pair exceedingly well with the Apollo rack.

Prolonged experience with the Apollo rack, using both servers as well as the Aqua La Diva M2 CD transport further cemented the aforementioned sonic aspects of the Apollo Amp Stand.
