These amplifiers have a soothing way with music that really draws the listener in. The first time I heard Zesto was at the 2016 HifiDeluxe show in the Marriott hotel, after having visited all the rooms at the MOC. In a small room all the way up in the tower, a system of Zesto phono amp (Andros or Andros Deluxe), Leto 1.5 preamp, and Bia 120 power amp was demoed with Joseph Audio Profile speakers and all-Cardas Clear and Clear Beyond cabling. Quoting from that review:

“This was the very last room that I visited, and perhaps this system produced the most emotionally involving music of them all! Timbre was full and the sound voluptuous and almost sensuous.”

And I was not exaggerating. The years after that, the pattern persevered. Pierre Costers of Colab also noticed and got in touch with me.

Located in Meise (near Brussels) Belgium, Colab is a Zesto agent for the Netherlands and distributor for many other brands, including Joseph Audio. A review was arranged and shortly thereafter Francois Dewalque of Bel Hifi arrived to drop off four boxes, two of which were positively huge. Not that Francois gave the impression of finding any of this remotely hard work. With a Jerom-like appearance (a very strong person from fictional comic Suske and Wiske), in my imagination, Francois had one power amplifier under each arm while juggling the other two boxes by an unknown means. In reality, we used a heavy-duty trolley but Francois did unpack everything by himself and in a mere matter of minutes!

For review here is a complete Zesto system consisting of the Andros Deluxe phono stage, Leto 1.5 preamplifier, and Eros 300 mono amplifiers. The Zesto lineup is refreshingly orderly. There are three phono stages of which the Andros Deluxe is the middle model, one preamp, a stereo power amp, and mono power amps.

Leto 1.5 preamplifier

The Leto 1.5 preamp is unassuming with only the most essential functionality but as I will explain further down, its sound more than makes up for this. The manual describes that at normal operating volume, the volume control should read around the 10 to 12 o’clock position. If the setting is much lower or much higher than that, then the dealer or the factory can make the internal adjustment. For my demo sample, I’m not sure which setting was used nor was I usually aware of the volume knob’s setting because it was impossible to distinguish the small black dot on the knob from my listening position approximately 5 meters away. This is the only major thing that I feel is missing: an indicator LED. Naturally, there’s also an IR remote control with buttons for volume, mute, and mono. Frankly, though, for 10K, a more beautiful device would have been suitable but, in any event, it does the job just fine.

There’s a nice section in the manual about tube rolling, playfully dubbed by Zesto as “the sport of audiophile kings”. First, there’s the stereo four-KT88 tube Bia 120 which I have heard on a couple of occasions in Munich. Under review here, however, are the company’s top model Eros 300 six-KT88 tube mono amplifiers. These are large and heavy beasts but with their curvy enclosures, they still maintain a friendly look. At 30 kgs each, they’re certainly not lightweight but this is much more manageable than a 45 kg-CH Precision amp or, even worse, a big Krell or Soulution amp, all of which are best moved with two persons.

With a hefty choke-based power supply and 150 watts of Class-A power achieved by six KT88 tubes in a Push-Pull, Ultra-Linear circuit, it will take a special pair of speakers to put the Eros 300’s out of breath. Francois told me that you could even run them just fine with one or two tubes missing. The tubes are auto-biased but it is not specified precisely how this is implemented. For instance, you can either continuously calibrate the tubes or only during start-up or power down and there are other bespoke methods that are said to all yield different results. Not that it matters much as there will always be those in favor of auto-bias and those against it. All I know from personal experience is that I have heard great-sounding amps using either method. One argument heard often is that auto-bias amps would sound less dynamic than fixed bias variants. Well, that is something that I have not been able to pin down based on my experience in practice. The huge upside of auto-bias, of course, is that one need not worry about matched pairs or continued manual adjustments. The amps can be connected with cinch- or transformer-coupled XLR inputs and there are 4-ohm and 8-ohm loudspeaker connections, as well as a Speakercon connector and a ground lift switch.

The Eros 300 amps are advertised as having “no negative feedback”. However, for power amplifiers, whether of the transistor- or tube sort, there is just no such thing. In general, feedback is used very effectively to improve stability, linearity, and frequency response. The bad reputation of feedback stems from the side-effect of introducing low-level but complex high-order distortion that comes across as unnatural. The amount of feedback that is used is critical as too little will introduce more distortion than it fixes and excessive feedback can lead to a sense of the music being overly controlled and can even add an upper-mid hardness while reducing the liveliness of the music. Also, a distinction should be made between local and global feedback.

Usually, when a manufacturer claims that an amp uses no feedback, what is meant is that the amplifier employs only feedback of the local sort and no global feedback. These methods achieve broadly the same thing but, in general, local feedback is perceived as sounding more natural. Going from the experiments that I have done with the CH Precision A1.5 amplifier and its adjustable balance between local and global feedback, I can confirm that this is the case. Broadly speaking, more global feedback improves the bass tightness and articulation while more local feedback improves the natural flow of the music. From listening to the Eros 300’s, they do indeed sound more conform to the latter.

The idle power draw (when switched on but not playing music) is 348 watts per amp and while that seems high compared to a class D amplifier, consider that many class AB amps that seem very efficient employ a very high bias current, which makes then draw considerably more power when idling than one might assume – 250 Watts is no exception. The sextet of KT88’s puts out a generous amount of heat but it’s certainly not excessive. For example, I found that the Line Magnetic LM-805 or LM-845’s or the Viva Verona XL and the Vaic Reference 520’s, all SET amps, were all much hotter. Or perhaps it seemed that way because with the Eros 300’s the heat is divided over six tubes per side rather than a single pair. Either way, you won’t burn off the skin of your finger when briefly touching on of the KT88’s and while the Eros 300 pair can certainly increase the room temperature, the amps never felt as if they were uncomfortably hot.

The following is stated in the manual regarding tube-rolling:

“The unit is designed to work safely with any KT88. I’m starting with the digital front end consisting of the Antipodes CX+EX server and CH Precision C1 DAC and will involve the Origin Live turntable with the Andros Deluxe phono stage later. It is not a rule set in stone, but in my experience, systems comprised of same-brand components often work together well. But, sometimes, what you get can be too much of a good thing, for example, a sound that is too warm or too clean. In these cases, the particular house sound may not be what matches best with a particular pair of speakers, a given room, or a certain taste. As it would turn out, the Zesto components do indeed work together synergistically and, as I was very happy to find, they do not really have a house sound.

The Zesto system is transparent and even-handed and although I can’t say that any character is being superimposed onto the music, I think it is fair to describe the system delivery as big and powerful yet relaxed and smooth and totally free-flowing with an utter lack of edge, hardness, or any kind of electronic signature. Often with tube systems, the magic is in the midrange and while there is certainly midrange magic with the Zesto system, constraining the delivery to only the midrange would be short-selling the system. The Zesto delivery is one of togetherness, of music as a whole with no single area outshining another. Interestingly, if you dissect the sound into bass, midrange, and treble performance, or detail retrieval, soundstaging and imaging, the system excels in each territory. But there is an overwhelming sense of the music simply shining through, making it very easy to just relax into the performance and letting the music wash over you.

With the Kroma’s, the Zesto Eros 300 power amplifiers clearly have more than enough power reserve. There is just never a feeling that they need to flex their muscles. This is not to say that they sound non-muscular, quite the contrary, actually. It’s just that the music flows so effortlessly and so fluidly that it absolutely does not sound like there are huge multi-tube amps at work. Amplifiers with multiple output devices (be that transistors or tubes) can often also have an unwanted side effect and typical multi-transistor amplifiers can make the music sound strident or rough, or both, while typical multi-tube amps can add blur or fatness, or indeed both. With the Eros 300, however, I heard none of these effects. It’s not just a Push-Pull design, of course, it is also Class-A. In this case, this means that all 6 tubes amplify the entire signal in Class-A with 3 of them in positive phase and 3 of them in negative phase. I suspect that the Class-A aspect has a large effect both on the perceived continuous flow as well as the solidity and authority of the bass. The bass really is something else and although it seems logical to attribute that only to the Eros 300 amplifiers, I found that the Leto 1.5 preamplifier absolutely also adds its share.

I’ve heard very powerful bass from a tube amp with an Audio Research VT-200 with 8 pairs of 6550 tubes but, while hugely entertaining, this amp’s bass was of the big, beefy, and fat kind – it lacked definition and speed. On the other end of the scale, the Ayon Spirit III is unique for its super-tight and very solid sound. The Zesto system’s bass is solid, authoritative, and well-defined but without ever becoming dry or square. I guess you could say that it falls somewhere between the extra-tight Ayon and the overly lush VT-200. In terms of dynamic impact, with the Kroma’s at least, the Zesto system seems to be a little restrained, when compared to the Ayon Spirit III or the CH Precision C1 + A1.5 system and compared to these amps, the Zesto’s tonality is also very slightly dark. Importantly, though, there is never the sense of there being an imaginary ceiling cutting off the treble at some point. More likely it is gently rolled off, in line with many other tube amplifiers. The treble itself is well-refined and airy and, above all, very well-integrated – it never sticks out. It is simply fully integrated with the rest of the frequency spectrum and that’s what I find is most important.

Individual Assessments

Although the manual states that it is not recommended to drive the Eros 300’s directly from a DAC or to use passive volume control, I figured that the CH Precision C1 is no ordinary DAC and has no passive volume control either, and so, I removed the Leto 1.5 preamp and connected the amps directly. From earlier experience, lots of it with Wadia DACs and CD players, I know that this can improve the bass solidity and dynamic impact but at the cost of some finer nuance and treble fluidity. From more recent experience with the Ayon Spirit III amplifier, however, I know that feeding its power amp section directly from the CH C1 DAC offers absolutely no improvements over using it as an integrated amplifier with the same DAC. Very much the same thing happened with the Zesto system when feeding the Eros 300’s directly from the C1 DAC. Yes, the bass was a little bit more solid but at the expense of pretty much everything else. The soundstage collapsed, the fluidity decreased, the treble became darker, and most of all, the musicality diminished significantly. Clearly, the Zesto Leto 1.5 preamplifier has a large stake in the matter.

I also experimented with both output transformer taps. The Kroma’s are 8-ohm speakers but depending on the circumstances, and with some brands, sometimes the 4-ohm output can result in a more engaging sound. Well, not here. While the 4-ohm outputs did result in a subjectively subtler delivery that had a little bit more treble air, this came along with a softening in the bass and a reduction of the dynamic impact meaning that the 8-ohm outputs were absolutely preferred for these speakers.

Leto 1.5

Just how great the Leto 1.5 preamp is, becomes clear when comparing it with the Ayon Stealth preamp. The latter has always been a champion in terms of bass power and tonal fullness and while the Leto 1.5 doesn’t improve on the Ayon in these areas, it is considerably more detailed and transparent as well as more airy and refined. More impressively still, the Leto 1.5 is not only more agile and articulate, which might indicate a move toward a more rigid or technical sound, but it also injects the music with a more lyrical quality. The Ayon’s earthy sound may still rule when it comes to rocking out loud but otherwise, the Zesto trails ahead. While the Ayon remains the most solid-sounding preamp, the Zesto is also not extremely far off in that field and if not as solid and full-bodied, the Leto 1.5 is very dynamic. It also has another great quality which is its ability to provide a clear focus while also filling the room with its huge soundstage. Pacing-wise, I wouldn’t say there is much between the two, both sounding foot-tappingly fast. Ultimately, much of a component’s success hinges on the match with other components. Since the Eros 300’s are quite sonorous and earthy themselves, the agile and open-sounding Leto 1.5 works super-synergistically with them. Perhaps the Leto 1.5’s best quality is that it is very much a chameleon. It always transparently relays whatever the source is feeding it. And while some other very transparent preamps may become cool or uninteresting in the process, the Leto 1.5 actually makes the musical message come across more vividly.

Andros Deluxe

In operation, the Andros Deluxe is a delight: its controls are easily accessible and produce no clicks or pops and it’s very easy to find the right loading value using the big rotary knobs. It has a well-paced and transparent but slightly rounded delivery that is very easy to relax into. The slight softness is not something that really stands out, though – during my initial listening it actually seemed to be a chameleon, just like the Leto 1.5 preamp, seemingly adding no character of its own. However, in a direct comparison with other phono stages that I have at hand, such as the entry-level Schiit Madi, the mid-range SW1X LPU-1, or the very high-end CH Precision P1, the Zesto does have a noticeably rounder and smoother presentation. It’s nothing to be worried about too much, though, unless one is after the tightest and most articulate delivery, which, in many cases will come along with a reduction of the musical flow. And that is something that the Andros Deluxe does magnificently. Musicality – I use that word entirely too much. In itself the word is meaningless but it is something that immediately springs to mind when listening to LP’s with the Zesto system. There is absolutely no masking of fine detail – you really do hear everything, yet the music always sounds effortless. Especially when paired with the Zesto preamp, the combined presentation is utterly free from hardness, electronic influences or other kinds of artifice.

Martin Logan ESL15A loudspeakers

As an alternative to the Kroma’s, I also put the Martin Logan ESL 15A’s to use. As it panned out, I did not get around to trying the Eros 300’s with these speakers but from earlier experience, I know that not many tube amplifiers will work well with these electrostatics. Due to their inherently very low impedance (4 Ohms nominal but only 0.5 Ohms at 20kHz), all the tube amps that I tried sounded woolly and dulled in the treble to some extent. The tube amplifiers that worked best were the double set of PrimaLuna DiaLogue Premium HP switched to mono, although even these did not sound as open and articulate as pretty much any transistor amp. The HP’s use 8 EL34’s per channel, and while the output impedance will be the ultimate deciding factor, this does seem to indicate that multi-tube amplifiers may do a better job than single pair designs. And if that is indeed the case, then the Zesto’s might have performed well indeed.

In any event, using the CH Precision A1.5 power amplifier, I did try the Leto 1.5 preamp and Andros Deluxe phono stage with these speakers and that worked absolutely delightfully. Especially the preamp, that already ranked high on my scale, impressed me even further with these speakers – highly focused and fully transparent to the source yet fluid and highly engaging, it really is a reference-class design. Not that the phono staged was underperforming, far from it – the pair always made music in an effortless, even-handed, and engaging manner, even more so than it did with the Kroma Audio Carmens. It was only when comparing with the CH P1 phono stage that it was confirmed that even more dynamic impact was possible along with even more credible texture and timbre. But at what cost! Nevertheless, the Andros Deluxe is extremely well-balanced and really the only aspect of its performance that I would like to have seen differently is that it is a little bit too smooth. But that will also be a matter of taste and, importantly, system-matching. For instance, the Origin Live turntable sounds full-bodied and quite rich, more so than the average turntable, so that is definitely a factor. I suspect that many folks will absolutely love the slightly euphonic sound of the Andros Deluxe, especially as that also makes it more of a musical omnivore.

Like the CH P1 phono stage, the CH A1.5 power amplifier is admittedly very costly and, I suspect, also not a likely pairing with the Zesto’s. The only other power amp that I currently have at hand is the humble NuPrime ST10 but imagine my surprise as it turned out to work absolutely brilliantly! This very affordable class-D amplifier drives the Logans without breaking a sweat but this combination also retains the Zesto pairing’s tube richness and offers extremely solid bass, a full and sonorous timbre and incredible dynamics. Interestingly, the NuPrime’s solidity and dynamics filled in very nicely for the more relaxed nature of the Zesto Andros Deluxe phono stage, the pair effectively performing to each other’s strengths.

Of course, the NuPrime does not possess all of the CH’s attributes nor does it fully relay all of the Zesto component’s transparency and refinement but the performance is absolutely highly involving. The main message to take away from this is perhaps that Class-D amps should not be dismissed on the grounds of them not being “musical”. Trust me: they absolutely can be. Especially with a front end as great as the Zesto.

Cables

I have a feeling that the Zesto system works with a wide range of cables but what worked very well in my case between the phono stage and the preamp are the Vermouth Reference XLR cables and the Cardas Clear XLR cables, where I have a slight preference for the more sonorous and more powerful sounding Vermouths. Between the preamp and power amps I found that the cleanest and least filtered cables worked best – the CH Precision Balanced Link XLR cables. In the field of cinch cables, I found that the AudioQuest Water also worked very well either between phono and preamp or DAC and preamp. For power cables, I used Belden 19364 with Bals schukos and Oyaide C-004 IECs.

Equipment Support

With power amplifiers this large, it is tempting to place them directly on the floor. Many people do and many also believe that power amplifiers, certainly ones as large and heavy as these, should not be sensitive to how they are placed. Alas, that is a misconception. In my experience, pretty much any audio component is sensitive to its placement and that includes heavy power amplifiers. Indeed, when placing them on the Artesania Aire floor platforms that have been upgraded with Carbon Fiber arms, the Eros 300 amps become faster and much more articulate in the bass and better differentiated overall, as well as more dynamic while retaining their inherent refined and stress-free delivery. While these racks are relatively costly, especially with the Carbon Fiber arms, their influence is so monumental that they should be a serious consideration. Naturally, the Artesania racks are not the only options and I’m sure that there are other racks or platforms that may work very well. The message is to experiment with this if you want to extract the best from these amplifiers. I should add that the Kroma’s are quite smooth and full-sounding themselves and so the balance might work out differently when pairing the Eros 300’s with cooler-sounding speakers.

While I find that the Zesto phono stage and preamp are a little bit more expressive and the power amps a little bit smoother, the combination works like magic. Nevertheless, the source components also clearly relayed the differences between the surfaces that they were placed on. Especially with the Kroma’s, they both sounded great on the Artesania Exoteryc racks with Carbon Fiber arms. But with the utterly transparent Martin Logans, they sound even better on the Artesania Organic Line Modular rack.

Apogee Duetta Signature loudspeakers

Finally, I also used the Eros 300 power amplifiers and Leto 1.5 preamp in JW’s system to see how they would drive the Apogee Acoustics Duetta Signature magnetostatics. These are pretty inefficient speakers but with a relatively flat impedance curve – unlike the Scintillas. This is why they have proven to work very well with a pretty wide range of tube amplifiers. But so far, the available power has always been limited and while the bass impact has at times been impressive, the tightness and articulation were never better than with big Class AB solid-state amplifiers such as those from AVM, Analog Domain, CH Precision, and, perhaps the most bad-ass in terms of bass so far, Soulution.

Restored Apogee Duetta Signatures with Soulution 711 in a previous setup

Of course, the 300’s are no lightweight amplifiers – with six KT-88’s per channel in Class-A, I had no doubt that they would have no issues driving the Duettas properly. But what I did not expect was how utterly sublimely the combination would pan out to be. While, with the Kroma’s, the 300’s could be regarded as lush and seductive but also a little soft and dynamically not hugely expressive, with the Apogees there is not a trace of softness or restraint. I have owned many Duettas, both original and restored, and have heard them in various setups but, without exaggeration, this is the best that I have heard these speakers sound so far.

The Zesto Leto 1.5 and Eros 300 produce a mighty big and lifelike sound with these magnetostatics. Positive and sunny, energetic, forcefully dynamic, sonorous and full-bodied, with room-filling soundstaging and a super-lyrical quality – the emotion is truly leaping off the foils like never before. In addition, the Eros 300’s bass is absolutely stunning. It’s not a transistor-like bass – no one will be tricked into thinking that the CH Precision A1.5 or a Soulution 711 is playing. As with pretty much all-tube power amplifiers, the bass isn’t of the super-dry and super-articulate kind. But it is incredibly powerful and well-defined and well-paced, super-convincing and absolutely authoritative. The Ayon Spirit III has also been used in this setup and while that amp is a bit of an exception with its almost transistor-like bass, the Zesto 300’s make music on a much grander scale and are more natural and organic. And even if the Ayon is more direct, the Zesto’s sound more convincingly live, more like the real thing.

I should also mention the Audio Research Reference 75 SE with which these speakers were driven previously. Like the Ayon, this amp is much tighter and more articulate than the average tube amplifier and for a while, this amp was found to be almost perfect with the Duettas. However, a romance with the Line Magnetic LM-150IA already started a parting of ways with its much more organic sound even if it is ultimately underperforming on a purely audiophile level. Compared to the Ref 75 SE, the Eros 300’s are smoother and creamier, in tonality closer to the Line Magnetic than the ARC but on the audiophile-level of the latter yet so much more involving and convincing. The Zesto pairing’s textures and overall timbre are absolutely out of this world. Where the Audio Research amp’s tonality seems to be tilted toward the upper midrange, the Zesto’s might appear as being darker but, on balance, and after listening to a couple of tracks, I actually think that the Zesto’s balance is actually spot-on and much more natural.

All of this talk about individual aspects is meaningless if everything does not combine into an involving performance but the Zesto system has certainly got that covered. It has the kind of delivery that is never edgy but always communicative, making you want to play record after record. Listening fatigue? Syntax Error. Does not compute. With the Zesto’s there is a sense of realism, of utter involvement and acoustic believability that I have not heard the Apogees reproduce with any other amplifier, be that tube or transistor. I am convinced and so is JW – he actually purchased a pair of Zesto Eros 300’s and he will also add a Leto 1.5 when funds allow.

Conclusion

Smooth and seductive, organic, big and powerful, and utterly realistic – the Zesto system does it all. The Eros 300’s need some care in the speaker pairing but when it matches they provide the most involving and lifelike performance that I have heard so far. The Zesto components augment each other perfectly and the Andros Deluxe phono stage and especially the Leto 1.5 preamp are universally applicable and perform superbly. If the Eros 300’s are a bit too dear and your speakers not too demanding, consider the Bia 120 stereo amplifier to make for a system that, while not exactly cheap, costs a lot less than many competitors while offering a spectacularly musical performance. Whoops, I used that word again!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-26735"
