Hotel Convent San Roque is located just below and to the left of Bilbao.<\/em><\/p>\n I’ve missed one issue of the event in 2017, in Barcelona, but I was<\/em> present at the most recent Enosound show, in\u00a0Balmaseda, close to Bilbao. The venue of choice this time was the Hotel Convent San Roque owned and enthusiastically run by Bibiana Castellano, who happens to be Cayetano’s sister. As it turned out, Bibiana has a real knack for fine food, fine wines and appealing interior decoration.<\/p>\n This is the beautiful inside garden of Hotel Convent San Roque<\/p>\n This year, they are celebrating the building’s 350th year in existence and what better way to emphasize this by having the hotel’s most beautiful rooms equipped with super high-end audio systems that play while the guests enjoy fine dining? What’s more, Cayetano will also take this occasion to present his new wine brand\u00a0Pekatu. And as if this wasn’t enough to convince me to go, he also mentioned that we could see the Guggenheim Museum, get Pinchos (Tapas) at the best places in Bilbao and visit Europe’s largest private car museum.<\/p>\n The second floor, from where all the rooms are accessed. In the middle is a view downstairs into the main hall and upstairs is a view outside through the glass ceiling.<\/p>\n This is the wonky wood stairs that I would walk up and down countless times. It’s not exactly level and a bit crooked (to be fair: it is 350 years old!) but very sturdy.<\/p>\n Although this should probably be described as a music event with food and wine served, I kind of perceived it the other way around: wining and dining with very nice folks, with great music to go along with it! But that’s not to say that the sound was subservient to the rest, as the systems were very, very serious!<\/p>\n In all seriousness, the purpose of this show was twofold: to get exposure for Cayetano’s new Pekatu wine brand as well as for the exhibiting audio brands, not least of which is the new Kroma Audio brand of which the new Elektra speakers were demoed with an all CH Precision system, and to introduce non-audiophile people to the wonderful world of high-end audio.<\/p>\n Room1<\/strong><\/p>\n Kroma Audio Elektra Room 2<\/strong><\/p>\n Room 3<\/strong><\/p>\n Elac Adante Movie theatre<\/strong><\/p>\n Oppo Audiocom Cayetano was so kind to pick us up from the airport and drive us to the hotel, where the show would also take place. Also in the car was Rapha\u00ebl Pasche of CH Precision (above left), with whom Jan Willem and I had lots of fun right from the start. Being one of the hardware engineers at CH Precision as well as a very witty person there really was no shortage of subjects to discuss.<\/p>\n Pekatu wines and Clausura Cava on display in the Hotel Convent San Roque central space.<\/em><\/p>\n On the first day of arrival, there were no guests yet, only a select group of invitees, so we basically had the whole hotel for ourselves. This was really great: imagine walking from room to room listening to music, going via the bar for some nice food and beers, then returning via the central space where delicious entrees were served as part of a wine tasting event!<\/p>\n Here’s a view of the hotel bar with THE BEST Tortilla that I have ever had. A few years ago I got introduced to the dish by a Spanish girlfriend and she was great at making Tortilla. This version, however, was truly in a class of its own! I must have had at least 5 slices during my stay.<\/p>\n Here are Ignacio Salvador (left) and Miguel Castro (right). Miguel is one of the two owners of Kroma Audio, which is the brand of the speakers in room 1. He also designed the new Artesania racks, but I will get to that later. Ignacio is a distributor of Jeff Rowland equipment in Spain and when he heard that JW and I have owned almost every JRDG component out there, we had plenty to talk about.<\/p>\n This was the first dish to go with one of the wines (I forget which one): Tuna with pepper and sesame on the edges. That might seem simple, but it was done just right and tasted heavenly.<\/p>\n Here is another interesting dish: it’s something with deceptive looks. They had a Spanish name for this but the wine made me forget… Anyway: it looked like an Oreo but was actually made from black olive with a cream filling.<\/p>\n JW and Rapha\u00ebl, with what would be the first of a range of slices of Tortilla and… Amstel beer! I was hoping for some nice Spanish beers but the pub served Dutch Amstel! It tasted different though. Clearly being brewed locally makes for discernible differences, for the better BTW:-)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here are Miguel Castro and Javier Mill\u00e1n posing proudly with their new Kroma Elektra speaker. Miguel took care of the cabinet which is made entirely from Krion, which is the same material of which the Artesania Krion Platforms are made. Javier was responsible for the crossover design.<\/p>\n There was no shortage of vinyl!<\/p>\n This was the first night, during which only dealers and press were around, no guests just yet. This was just as well, because this turned out to be a difficult room acoustically, and some important tweaks were made over the course of this day, evening and night so that the guests could be treated to overwhelming sound the next day.<\/p>\n The amplification and digital side was courtesy of Swiss CH Precision, the only exception being the CD player which was by T+A. This is a fine player but still something of a makeshift solution, because the courier delivery of the CH Precision player was delayed. The beautiful pieces of furniture that the equipment sits on are the new Artesania racks, designed by Miguel Castro, named The Absolute Rack.<\/p>\n TechDAS Air Force III in all its glory on top of the new Artesania racks.<\/p>\n Unlike last time, this marvellous player was not fitted with a SAT arm and although there are many factors responsible for the sound, both times the same\u00a0Kiseki Purple Heart NS cartridge was used, and so I am quite sure that this Kuzma\u00a04-point tonearm sounds very different from the SAT. The latter on the same turntable was super-neutral and dynamic while the combination with the Kuzma sounded warmer, more mellow.<\/p>\n These are the new Artesania “The Absolute” racks, designed by Kroma Audio’s Miguel Castro. The racks are brand new and had been finished just before the event. They are made from a combination of Krion (the black parts) and Panzerholz (the wood parts).<\/p>\n The CH Precision M1 on top of the new Artesania Krion\/Panzerholz floor platform. Cayetano told me that I could be in trouble after hearing them and promised me that I could review one of these floor platforms. This will be after the Munich show, so keep an eye on the HFA front page!<\/p>\n The side panels are flanked with beautiful inlaid carbon fiber material. Very likely I will also review a pair of Kroma Audio speakers in the near future, but it probably won’t be these big’uns!<\/p>\n The CH Precision\u00a0M1 power amp is a special piece of technology. Rapha\u00ebl has told me all about it! For example, one can connect to it using a tablet and adjust all kinds of parameters. This is true for all CH Precision equipment but the amp’s\u00a0functionality is particularly interesting because it allows free adjustment of the feedback. Want the sound smooth and free-flowing? No problem, move the\u00a0slider all the way to the left. Want punch, power and control? Also no problem, move the slider to the right. Or somewhere inbetween. As we found out (best I could cope while eating, drinking and chatting) the value of 20 was the best compromise between fluidity and control. When we listened to the system again the next day, we were still happy with this setting and Rapha\u00ebl told me that this indeed seems to be a setting that many people end up with.<\/p>\n I will publish an interview with Rapha\u00ebl shortly, as part of a review of the C1 DAC and A1 Power Amp which will be supplied by Bjorn Mateijsen of Netherlands-based\u00a0Audioingang<\/a>.<\/p>\n Here’s Miguel cueing a record on the TechDAS. The sound of this system was acoustically\u00a0utterly convincing, with absolutely lifelike timbre and huge dynamics. I’ve never heard vocals and percussion reproduced this realistically. Choral works were tear-jerkingly beautiful but the speakers worked very well with a wide range of music.<\/p>\n Naturally, the evening ended in the hotel bar!<\/p>\n Left to right: Cayetano, Rapha\u00ebl, me and JW.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The listening in room 2 was very special because this was accompanied by wine tasting and a 5-course dinner. If only my favorite Amsterdam restaurants had such great sound!<\/p>\n Buddy JW taking a close look.<\/p>\n Ha: these components are familiar. Antipodes DX3<\/a> and Core: quite simply the best Music Server I heard so far.<\/p>\n Gryphon Kalliope DAC<\/p>\n Yup: that’s the new Artesania Krion\/Panzerholz platform, this time with a big T+A A3000HV Power amp on top. Behind it is the Exoteryc Rack<\/a> in tandem form, in silver, as a variant to the graphite colour. The racks are also available in black.<\/p>\n The T+A amp may look gimmicky, but the sound in combination with the Raidho’s was really good!<\/p>\n The sound of this system was silky-smooth and very rich and very easy to relax into. The treble was super-airy and free-flowing, with a neutral mid-band and the bass was articulate nicely full-bodied. These speakers’ treble was also very much to JW’s liking. When he was only in his early 30’s, his first system already contained Apogee Centaur hybrid ribbon speakers (and – cough – Sony amps) so it is no wonder that he likes the Raidho’s ribbon tweeters.<\/p>\n Will you look at those perfectly laid out tables! We were expected at 14:00 but when JW and I showed up exactly on time, there\u00a0was no-one! Half an hour later some people were playing the audio system but no food in sight. An hour later we could see the tables getting occupied slowly. Still half an hour later (now almost 2 hours later than the announced start) almost everyone had been seated, so that’s when JW and I joined. This is when we learned that it is better to not hurry and just take it slowly. Manhana manhana is still a thing in Spain, it seems:-)<\/p>\n This is Olalla Elorriaga, best Sommelier\u00a02014 of Spain. She explained various\u00a0aspects of wine tasting and the pairing with the food. I was later told that she can tell the grape and wine brand just by smelling a glass of wine!<\/p>\n Above: the menu. Alas, my Spanish is not good enough to understand anything mentioned here… Oh wait: frutos is fruit, right?<\/p>\n Razor clams with two different toppings. Before this there was another dish of which sadly I forgot to take a picture: duck liver with special herbs and ground nuts in a small liquor glass.<\/p>\n Heek (hake) filet with a mixture of pork and octopus. The Heek filet was simply sublime and although I was a little scared of the mixture, it actually matched very well with the pork\/octopus\/calamari mixture.<\/p>\n Super-savory Oxtail in a package of thin dough with forrest fruit compote. This was soooo\u00a0tasty I could eat 6 of them.<\/p>\n Dessert: cooked pear with vanilla ice cream – yummy<\/p>\n Here’s Bibiana Castallano, owner of the\u00a0Hotel Convent San Roque and responsible for its beautiful interiors. My seat was to Bibiana’s left, and with the audio system right behind her, my position could not have been more perfect!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The listening in room 2 wasn’t actually listening because I did not get around to hearing this system play. By the time that I discovered this room, the system had been decommissioned to make room for more dinner tables.<\/p>\n It’s a shame that I did not get to listen to this system. From the last time I learned not to underestimate Elac speakers and of earlier experience with Luxman I know how lush these products sound.<\/p>\n Isn’t it a beauty? I want one, on looks alone!<\/p>\n It goes perfectly with the black Artesania Exoteryc rack!<\/p>\n By now it was time for a more formal presentation that had the local press and bloggers present.<\/p>\n This is the Major of\u00a0Balmaseda: \u00c1lvaro Parro.<\/p>\n Cayetano also had a few things to say. My Spanish is rusty but I believe he said something along the lines of Christiaan Punter being the best reviewer in the whole world. Or something to that extent. Alas, we only got to see the exterior because we had to visit 4 Pinchos bars first, before proceeding to the airport.<\/p>\n Oh boy, I’m getting hungry just by looking at this.<\/p>\n Here’s Cayetano, slicing up some frightening mussel and calamari (octopus) croquettes. The scary thing for me was that I don’t really like mussels and have never before encountered a food in which not only calamari was used, but also its ink!<\/p>\n Notice the black colour? That’s because of the Octopus’ ink! Turned out they taste fine! Alas, being the whimp that I am, I could not really enjoy them.<\/p>\n And finally, here’s Cayetano, doing his famous jump-photo routine!<\/p>\n It was an amazing couple of days and I am already looking forward to the next installment of the Enosound event! No matter if you are a wine-lover, crazy for fine foods, a music lover, a hard-core audiophile or someone who simply enjoys all finer things in life, the Enosound events are not to be missed!<\/p>\n Audio Club Premier<\/a><\/p>\n Artesania Audio Can’t get enough? I’ve compiled one more page with photos of our super-speedy tour through the many halls comprising Europe’s largest private car Museum!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Right before we had to go to the airport to go back to Amsterdam, after attending the Enosound\u00a0Event<\/a>, we quickly visited Torre Loizaga<\/a>, Europe’s largest private car museum. Unlike a regular museum where everything is situated in one building, this museum is spread over vast acres of land, set in an\u00a0idyllic environment. I’ve lost count of how many halls there were but it must have been at least 6 of them! All the big brands were here: Mercedes, Rolls-Royce, Ford but also Ferrari and Lamborghini and many many more brands.<\/p>\n I don’t think this classifies as a car but it sure is cute!<\/p>\n Now that is<\/em> a car, and a marvelous one at it!<\/p>\n Caye, Sun Jun and Rapha\u00ebl.<\/p>\n No big deal: this is only one of 10 or so Rolls-Royce cars!<\/p>\n See? There are rows and rows of them!<\/p>\n I don’t know the brand of this red vehicle. Anyone?<\/p>\n Cayetano was so excited about the Lamborghini that he looked slightly out of focus<\/p>\n Sun Jun and Rapha\u00ebl Pasche doing the Royal wave in their royal seats in a hall full of Rolls-Royce automobiles.<\/p>\n Here are Cayetano and his sister Bibiana.
