CONSONANCE
Consonance
1989-1994
new approx 4500 euro
used 1250-1500 euro
This unassuming little preamp (pictured on top of a model 1 poweramp)is in fact extremely complete in its setup. All the following functions can be controlled from either the front panel of the remote control: independent channel mute, balance, dual rate volume control, separate direct select input/record output control, mono, phase, display on/off, memory and recall functions for volume level.
Soundwise this has been a long-standing favorite of mine, it beating many competitors. Optionally available was a phono module that sounded marvellous. This module is not visible from the outside but the preamp mentions it(s absence) when starting up. If installed it uses input 1 for phono input signals and consequently you give up one line-level input.
It wasn't until the Synergy 2 and Cadence came along that I considered the Consonance beaten. But not in every aspect as the Consonance had more bass power and an overall livelier presentation. But it was also more coarse and had inferior resolution in comparison. When I tried the Synergy 1 it turned out that it was a lot faster and dynamic than the Synergy 2i and thus it replaced my Consonance.
